Yes, I apply a 50/50 mix of PVA and water and paint it over the surface of the pot. Once it's dry I use tile adhesive: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sIK7Xp2dltqKeZo. But if you are using flat tiles then you could also use PVA (not recommended for outdoors). I hope that helps!

I think you are the only one showing this difficult process in such clarity! As a beginner, I feel it's a constant struggle between two inner voices: One constantly says, "Oh no! What an ugly gap! That's way too amateurish!" and the other one must constantly calm the first one down: "Trust me. In the end, it will work. Grouting and a little distance will help. No one will notice!" 😃
