Great tutorial, keep the content coming. Thanks for doing these, there's always something new to learn. One of my favourite parts of modeling is weathering. You can tell a story just by adding a little detail.

just an observation, look at images of cutty sark, victory, warrior in fact any ship the decks are not brown they weather down to pale grey. most modellers assume A wooden deck so it must be brown. Tamiya deck tan is a good approximation. not wooden deck tan.

In this video I show you how.to obtain the base tone as well as highlight all the detail, but in the next part I'll show you have to add all the other tones to create a very authentic wood effect as well as how to change tones to create different kinds of wood. @@RJScaleShipsReplicas that's fantastic. I use revell acrylics to, it's not the best paint I admit. That's truly the case if they have been sitting for a year or 2/3. But I have grown up with it and I have used it for 9 years or so. I'm now 17 and just love the hobby. Looking forward to the next one with a big smile.

@@firminvansligter1201 is it the revell Aqua that you use?? I think they are probably some of the best paints put there for normal base colours. The ability to mix your own colours, thin them with water or to create an almost wash pigment. The only other paint that comes close is the new O-Colours by Occre, but in terms of detail it's gotta be vallejo. In the next part I'll show you how to gain the different wood effects and how to paint the individual planks to look like authentic wood. Both in terms of weathered old wood as well as new wood.

There are a couple of other kits from Heller that look to be really promising. Le Preussen, Pamir and the Amerigo Vespucci. Those are the ones that I have and I think you already built the Constitution from Revell didn't you?

Hi Richard.. yes I've already done the USS Constitution. That was my second build I think. Heller do some amazing kits with incredible detail, but the only one I have in my stash is the Royal Louis. The Amerigo Vespucci is a lovely model

Hi can you use an airbrush to apply these effects also for painting the boats. I have just returned to modelling after many years

To be honest, I wouldn't want to try Russell because, ideally, you want to pain each individual plank one at a time. I know I wouldn't have enough skill or control with an airbrush. All my work is done by hand, which gives me much more control. You could try Russell, but I can not guarantee results I'm afraid

Do you prime your plastic decks and hulls before applying the base? If so, which brand and color do you use?

Hi my friend. I have never used primer on any of my models especially the decks. If you are after an authentic looking wood deck, you need the paint to be as thin as possible. Too thick and you will start to look the detail in the mould, but no I've never used primer on anything.

Usually it's just decks etc, but this time I wanted to see if I could actually make a plastic kit appear as a wooden one.. very time consuming, but worth it in the end. @@RJScaleShipsReplicas Thank you, that is very much appreciated. I’m sure I’ll have many questions. I’ll try not to pester you too much though (at least until I get to the rigging)😂. I’m still in the process of gathering the materials (I’ve got most of what I need to start now) and researching the ship as well as looking at as many builds as possible in order to have a good idea of the direction I want to go with it before I start. I’ve never done anything even close to this size before. Quite intimidating opening that box for the first time! Balancing between what I want to do and what I can realistically do at my skill level is going to be the true challenge. I’ve got some ideas regarding the open quarter galleries. Perhaps hot glue casting the gilded panels that need to be cut out so I can transfer them to the hull. 🤔

I want to do the build as much out of the box and scratch build as I can but there are a couple things I’m considering aftermarket parts for. One is in my opinion pretty much necessary, rigging line. I’m certain I can get much higher quality, to scale line aftermarket. The kit only supplies tan line as well. and the other is blocks and deadeyes. The only place I can find online that supply these things is hismodel. Is there another distributor? And what is your opinion on the plastic blocks and deadeyes that come with the kit? Should they be replaced? I’m probably a year at least away from worrying about this but it never hurts to plan ahead.

No to highlight the detail you want to use black. In part two I'll be using multiple differnt colours and pigments to obtain the desired effect. With a convincing wood effect you can't just use one colour as mantjal wood (especially old weathered wood) isn't uniform in colour.

Sorry to bother you so much, but I got the heller soleil Royal and I don’t use or like the plastic sails, I’m doing my own but there is no scale print of the sails. Do you know where to get them? I emailed heller on this but three days later still no answer. Can you help?

Hi Charles. Nope the sails in the kit need to go and should be replaced with these sails. The same company that made the stunning sails for my Victory. @@RJScaleShipsReplicasBTW, it’s my first plastic ship and don’t like those toothpaste like plastic cement glues, what kind of glue you use for your ships? The Solei is too good of a model to screw up with bad glue.

I would strongly suggest Revell modelling glue. It has a great needle applicator that makes working with the glue much easier. It bonds plastic beautifully even once painted, but due to its needle applicator it makes it easier to get into hard to reach places as well as being much more accurate in terms of application.
