Nice job, Joe! The effects looked rally good.And I like the fact that you used common, easily found products to achieve the effects you got. My local Hobby Lobby carries that brand of paint, and considering our only hobby shop in town carries primarily RC stuff, Hobby Lobby is the only place to get modeling supplies. Great tutorial!

Thanks Brett! I think that finding other creative ways to create effects is what makes this hobby so interesting. I figured as long as it’s enamel based, I have a gloss coat, and the appropriate colors/tones it should work fine. My local shops don’t carry an extensive selection of weathering specific products, and I didn’t want to wait until something came in through the mail, so this was my solution. Keep up the great work over there Brett, your videos are great and i learned so much about improvising and improving my skill at modeling. Have a great weekend!

Hello Joe! Super nice introductory video for beginners in Ship weathering. I have been building model airplanes since 5.5 years now but I want to start with ships. I have a question, before you apply the salt effect, do you have to seal the model as well before applying this effect? Thanks!
@joekmodels4 ай бұрын
Thanks for checking out the videos! Yes I do seal it with future or an acrylic glass coat so I can apply the enamels to streak it down the side with enamel thinner. The gloss coat provides a smooth surface to apply the effect. Hope that helps!
@OzScalemodeling3 жыл бұрын
Very informative video, do you think your technique would apply the same on 1/350 -200 scale models? As the eye can see detail to a higher degree as you go up in scale.. really nice work your doing there, cheers.
@joekmodels3 жыл бұрын
I certainly think so Oz. I would just use different size brushes to create streaks in the relevant scale. I find that using brushes to bring down the streaks with thinner can be cleaner than using something like a cotton bud too. Thanks for checking it out :)

Thanks for the video, did you clear coat the acrylic paint before the enamel weathering? If so what did you use to clear coat ? Thanks George
@joekmodels Жыл бұрын
Yes I did with revive it. Sorry for the late response
@jerrybowers76783 жыл бұрын
couple of other questions, do you use a gloss coat before you do the panel line application? And after you are completely finished with the weathering do you final coat it with like a dull coat?
@joekmodels3 жыл бұрын
Yes and yes! One caveat with the dull coat though... If you are using a dullcoat like testors (lacquer based), and you are dull-coating over oil paint weathering, it will not mix well. I used enamels on this demonstration though, and it was fine. If ever in doubt, you can reseal it with another gloss coat before adding a lacquer based if you use oil weathering. Sorry to go on, but it took me awhile to figure that out. Good luck!

Hello. Thank you for this video. Nice work. What type of gloss coat did you use before the enamel effects? Acrylic gloss or enamel gloss? Thanks again. 🙏
@joekmodels4 ай бұрын
Thanks for checking the video out! I use “revive it” floor cleaner as an acrylic gloss coat. You should be fine with any type of acrylic gloss coat or future before hand if weathering with enamel based paints.

@@joekmodels 🙏 I just looked it up on Amazon and because they discontinued making it, some who have it in stock are selling it for over $100. USD for 27 oz.! 😭 Must be great stuff, but I'll try something similar. Your answer was still helpful for the step of clear coating. 🙏I will try some things! 🙂

Hi, I assume that the gloss coat prevents the other hull colors from being thinned when you start to drag the rust with a flat brush?
@joekmodels8 ай бұрын
Hello, yes that is right. The gloss coat seals in the previous paint layers. I would still just dampen the brush with enamel thinner rather than cake it on if that makes sense.

Can you use a Satin coat?...or do you need to use Gloss coat
@joekmodels3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jerry! I personally prefer a gloss coat when doing weathering. The smoother finish makes the streaking effects more natural. Satin might be ok, but it is certainly not as smooth. You could try experimenting on scrap plastic, but I would go with gloss.

im curious why not just use a dry brush for effect? seems to me its a one stop shopping. not a criticism, looks great thank you. regards
@joekmodels3 жыл бұрын
I think putting on the clear coat and pulling the streak down with a damp enamel thinner damp brush gives a more natural effect around the edges where a dry brush has a more stark contrast IMO. I think that there are more variables to be concerned about like if the paint is drying on the brush you would get different types of effects if you were doing multiple streaks. I also like that if I don’t like the way the streak has come out I can just wipe it away and start over as opposed to being stuck with it afterwards. I’ve seen other people do regular streaking with brushes and dry brushes and they come out with some great effect so this is really a personal preference to me. Thanks for the kind words and checking out the video Brian!

I sailed ocean going ships for 20 years. Never say salt do that in wet open water conditions. Sometimes see a very minor amount of salt, above the WL, once it dries in the sun, when the ship is in port. Rust yes, salt not like this.
