I bought a 7 seat sectional in red. Owners at the furniture store warned me, “We want you to be happy, and we think this is too bold a color!” At first I loved the color in my family room. Then a move. Years later it’s still in good shape, it won’t quit! (Quality furniture) Only thing left to do? I’ll make Pottery-Barn style slipcovers. A lot of work. 😞 . MORAL: BUY BIG FURNITURE IN NEUTRAL COLORS PLEASE!! PILLOWS ARE EASY TO CHANGE...🤭🥺💖🦩

My sister has a red sectional and it’s still going strong too! 😂 Her artwork complements it really well and the rest of the space is neutral. Definitely needs the right room to really pop!

I live in a studio apartment and have a hard time creating sections, maximizing space, and making everything flow. It's also hard to keep a feng shui vibe when all of my living, sleeping, and eating is done in one space. Could you maybe do a video on how to decorate a studio apartment without the clutter? I love your videos. They have all been super inspirational.

One quick screen I use when shopping for large pieces (new or old). I lift one corner. If the other three corners stay on the floor, the frame is too flimsy and I hustle along no matter how pretty the style/color/fabric/scale. A sturdy frame will lift the adjacent corner, then I take the time to check the structure wood, springs, etc. This tip works for sofas, beds, chairs, cabinets, tables, indoor/outdoor, you name it.

My husband and I live near St Paul de Vence, but moving in October to Lorient-Bretagne to a 300sqm house. All that space needs to be reviewed for us and the wellcoming of our 3 adult kids and family. Thank you so much for all your videos very helpful to anticipate the so many choices to come. We definitely understand that it is a too long term project to manage on our own : we will need help.. an interior architect with some drawings at first to know where to go, before buying new furniture. Without this video, we were already happily looking for furniture without any proper measurement..thinking whatever would fit because the new house is bigger as our 120sqm today..

One thing to keep in mind about leather --- especially with lower-cost sofas, is to know what you're buying when it comes to leather. Cheap furniture that is advertised as leather may instead be bonded leather, which cracks and peels over time with use. As for kitchen and laundry appliances, you may want to rethink black stainless steel appliances - especially in households with children. Appealing in looks? Yes, but considered high maintenance. From the Bob Villa website: "The black surface is created with a colored acrylic coating across regular stainless steel that unfortunately scratches fairly easily. That means any ding or nick-from a piece of furniture, a child's bike, even a laundry basket-could remove the coating to reveal the silvery stainless steel underneath." Once someone scratches the surface of the black stainless appliance, no commercial specialists may be available to repair those scratches. The appliance manufacturers in many cases may be unable to help with repairing scratched black stainless appliances -- not to mention that this damage falls outside "normal wear and tear" use under the warranty. So, repairing scratches on black stainless steel appliances will surely become a DIY project using a black marker or appliance touch-up paint - assuming you can match the color properly. About free-standing ranges with a shallow oven on top of a deeper oven -- consider both lifestyle and your physical condition and health. Remember, you will have to lift heavy foods (such as a hot roasted turkey) from the lower oven. Do you have to deal with back discomfort on occasion? Can you withstand lifting as you stoop and then rise to a standing position and still maintain your balance? I recommend visiting an appliance store (or appliance section of a big-box store) to test whether you are comfortable using a range with an oven that nearly rests on the floor. You may need and even want to find out whether you are comfortable with the use of an oven near the floor for the long term.

Excellent points and such great insight. Correct, bonded leather is a fancy way of labeling vinyl- only genuine leather means the real thing! 👍🏻

Love your videos! But I would say that coffee table heights ARE important and can vary from 12"-19" high. These should make sense with the sofa seating height. A very low coffee table, for example, can look strange with a 19" seat height.
@JulieKhuu
@JulieKhuu 4 жыл бұрын
18”/19” is standard seat height, so yes, definitely agree that 12” is low to the ground (most likely on the ground) and you would know if that was your design intent. But typical coffee table heights are standard 17” (give it take a couple inches). Thank you for the insight Kyla! ☺️

Kristine, that’s exactly how I bought my beautiful Bernhardt sectional sofa. It was $6500 new. I got it nearly new on EBay for $1500. I have now had it for 9 years and it’s still beautiful and so comfortable.

Big buy regret. I fell in love with a wonderful hand tied wool rug. It is a wonderful soft muted off white tones light with muted gray pattern. Even though the $8000 original price I paid $2000, the cost made my hubby not happy. I thought I got a steal because it was on sale. I knew it would look great with the new custom sofa we had just ordered. Wrong! The blue gray of the new sofa made the off white just look like the carpet was dirty. Sad because it is a beautiful piece.

At our last house, we had a galley kitchen and in order to have two ovens without losing space and a well-appointed previous design, we opted to replace the over-the-range microwave (recirculating vent) with a convection oven/microwave oven combo and paid to vent it outside like a standard standalone hood. The venting was actually more powerful than a standard hood because it was a higher end convection oven, so it would be incorrect to claim that people can only have a recirculating vent if they have a microwave hood venting system. It costs more, but a smaller space can have a "higher" end solution like ours that still added the value of more healthy (and powerful) outside venting. It may not be the most "beautiful" option, but in our space it was the best logical option that added, beauty, usability, and maintained the absolutely necessary space.

Very useful and wise information. I cannot tell you how many buying mistakes I have made during the years. My favorite story is when I purchased a floor sample living room set. It had everything I was looking for. Modern style I like, comfortable, fit in the space and amazing price. Here comes the but. i did not like the color and the coffee table it came with was not the coffee table I wanted in the first place. So guess what happened my very affordable living room set went to my niece as she is just starting out. I bought the more expensive living room set and coffee table that I wanted and cannot get the time back for buying that pumpkin color sofa set that reminded me of halloween everyday for 5 years of my life.

Awesome Skylar! So glad I can help! Lay out the easier room first, in this case the dining room since you know you need a dining table + chairs. Measure the leftover space, figure out the focal wall, and voila! Face the sofa towards that wall and design the accent pieces around it. You can do it! 🙌🏻

Julie Khuu hey Julie!! My husband is watching your series together with me now! ☺️ he used to want a recliner sofa but now agreed to go with a sectional with chaise! Hehehe thanks so much 😘 our longest wall is 123 inch wide and we have 2 sectionals that we like. One is 90 inch wide and another is 110 inch wide. Which one will go best with the wall and the space? We probably want to place a floor lamp on the side of the sectional but it is not mandatory. Thanks so much in advance 💖💖

Julie Khuu after asking the previous question we went back and watched the episode of measuring space again - so the longest walk should actually be the focal point and sofa should be placed facing that - however if that way, the sofa will be backing the railings, would that be weird? 🤔

Regretted several Washer/Dryer purchases over the years. When it comes to a Washing Machine low water is good for the planet, but not so much for my son's baseball clothes. When that clay gets ground into the outfits it is almost impossible to get out. Many of the newer styles now offer extended soaking times to make up for the loss of a agitator. I think people have complained so much that is why many companies now also offer machines with them back in. Dryers are hit and miss. Not all settings are what the are labeled to be.
