I’ve been amazed at how much I’m able to do on very little budget. My pry bar and mallet are my best friends. Spent money on paint but saved on labour. For me it’s been a necessity to change up my home after divorce. It’s about taking my power back and giving myself permission to be me. Putting my bedroom downstairs has worked. I graffitied the wood base of my new bed with positive phrases and words and am now able to sleep in the centre of the bed and spread out. It used to feel like there was barbed wire down the middle of the bed. No one can see the graffiti but it’s life changing.

I will always adore Ebay for CLOTHES shopping. Especially if I'm seeking something specific. Financial necessity made me begin thrifting about 15yrs ago. I still loved the 'good stuff', but couldn't afford it. I could buy new and get something substandard, or shop second-hand and maintain the level of quality I love. Learned a couple of painting skills, and restored several heirloom quality furniture pieces for less than pennies on the dollar. Have found the key is to be discerning and cultivate an eye for quality.
@JulieKhuu6 ай бұрын
Did you see me poll the team for eBay?! 🤣 These Gen Z’ers were like… huh? eBay? You buy furniture on there? Oh man I feel old! Haha
@karenokeane64616 ай бұрын
@@JulieKhuu LOL. To be honest., have yet to source any furniture off ebay. All of my finds have been from thrift stores, fb marketplace and garage sales. Like you, I was floored by the results of your gen z survey.....imo, regardless of age, Ebay remains hands down the best place to source quality clothing on the cheap. Clothes and a few collectable pieces (Christmas stuff in my case)---specific things. Time and again, have spent hours on end combing places like Amazon for decor items---lamps most recently......then became bogged down and stopped...deciding "when it comes, I will know". A couple of weeks later, I walked into my local mom and pop thrift store, and found not one but FOUR different lamps, each unique and of the HIGHEST quality. Their shades alone would run for hundreds of $$ apiece, since even the most basic shades are stupid expensive. LOL Wouldn't you know, each of those four lamps ended up being the PERFECT compliment for the spaces I had in mind. It was incredible. They cost $7 to $10 apiece. :) Another example is our Christmas tree. Had something specific in mind--pencil (thin) about 7ft high, to fit in the corner of our raised-hearth, red distressed brick fireplace. Budgeted $200, and quickly discovered ALL the trees I saw on Amazon and in the physical stores within that price range were total cheap-looking crap. LOL So I gave up, and let it go. A month or two later, I walked into the same mom and pop thrift store, and there it was: a Pencil Christmas Tree.....of OUTSTANDING quality....for $10. Moreover, it was flocked, which I hadn't before considered, and which compliments the red distressed brick of our fireplace to perfection. It was BETTER than I had imagined, and remains a show-stopper during the Holidays; no exaggeration. So I wholeheartedly agree with YOU, Julie, about "putting it out there" to the Universe. I only resort to places like Amazon if I need it "now', and couldn't find anything by thrifting. But those items are few and far between. :) EVERYONE, including the Gen Z's who adore Amazon so much, would benefit greatly from the practice of Thrifting.

I’ve photoshopped my pics and got cheap and custom frames with custom mats. I bought quality curtain rods for 75% off. Still need to make curtains, re-do the seat of my sofa and recover both sofas. Been ripping out old fences, aviaries and garden path for free. Decluttering and organising for my style has been calming. I’m taking it slowly but progress is good.

I feel like I always write this, but I think this might be my favorite video (again 😅) of yours Julie!! I am literally in the situation you described. Oh and you were a darling, darling little girl - so adorable!! What an inspiration your parents must be. I love Craftsy too! I learned to sew when my daughter was a baby. I collected baby and little girls sewing patterns from the 1950's and 60's and sewed her a wardrobe big enough for three children probably! 🤣. But it pretty much took everything we had to buy our little homestead and make the move from San Francisco to Kentucky. Now we literally are "broke". Reestablishing ourselves in a new state, new jobs, etc., and we'll need a little time to build up a nest egg again. And boy, when I say our house is a fixer upper? I am not underselling it! I've actually done several of the suggestions you made in today's video. I sewed some lace trim on some blue velvet drapes I thrifted for my daughter's room. I bought a bucket of joint compound, some wall and art paints, a trowel, and created some pretty cool art wall reliefs in my foyer, dining room, daughter's room and living room. I've also stalked FB Marketplace for some nice solid wood furniture pieces I could never afford new and refinished them or painted them. I want to reupholster my dining room chairs in something really funky, like velvet cheetah if I can thrift the fabric!!! Even though it takes me for-e-ver to finish a project or a room in my house and move to the next one, it's really fun, it gives me a great sense of accomplishment, and I love the result because I "designed" it 😊

I learned something really important: the furniture in my flat was located „right“ but I didn‘t see what I liked to see… never liked my living room and felt really unhappy in my new flat. You said: concentrate on your focal point. Now my sofas are located totally wrong, but when I sit on them, I can finally see the very old, big tree in front of the huge windows, I love to see so much, I can finally see the sky, instead of the ugly other house vis-á-vis. My furniture is positioned against all rules now, the sofa stands in the middle of the room now, but I can see what I like to see now, watch my loved cats for example, who I couldn’t see before without turning around, and feel finally happy and at home now. THANK YOU VERY MUCH 🙌🏻💐

We’ve all been there! I still feel like I’m there sometimes- it’s nice to shop with a broke mentality. Makes you more creative Patty! 🙌🏻

Where to shop: Nature. Things like branches, pine cones, rocks, sea shells, driftwood, etc. can all be free. Of course don't take them from places you shouldn't, but always be looking around for interesting things laying on the ground. Also, the side of the road on trash day. People throw away amazing things. I got an entire set of lawn furniture once when I was just starting out because my neighbor decided to redecorate her patio. It was all in great shape. She just didn't want the bother of selling it so put it to the curb!

I know I can up my game by stopping being inhibited about hanging things on my walls! I start vascilating between types of hangers. I want to use something like command strips, but keep thinking of things falling off and glass breaking! These outsized concerns paralyze me, leaving the walls blank at the top, and potential wall decorations propped at the bottom of the walls! Sigh

There are new hanging ware that barely make a dent or a hole on the wall, especially for heavy items. Try things like 3M The Claw, it leaves tiny holes on the wall, for example.

I have a great video called- How to hang pictures like a pro. All my best DIY tips for hanging pretty much anything on your walls Jeanne-Marie! I never use command strips/ mounting tape for artwork- unless the art is canvas/ frameless/ less than 1lb. I don’t trust the support. 3M’s claw is great, I second that! 👍

I have collected most of my decor items over a 40 year period. You don't need to buy all new pieces. There are very few pieces in my apartment that I don't love. I am going to replace my ho hum nightstands asap.

Been going around my house donating all the items I’ve collected over the years that don’t carry any sentimental value. Away with the ho hum energy Paula! 🙌🏻💗

After selling my sea container and demolishing the old aviaries, I have barrow loads of road base and good gravel/sand mix to maintain my long driveway for free. The sea container money is going to the bills. Big win-win.

I love your videos but I have to mention that your mosquito guy said the spray kills all insects. It kills pollinators too. Get rid of the standing water. I live South Carolina and I know the pain but we have to protect bees and butterflies!

Some of us are widows and widowers living on Social Security… and no extra $ ….not even a dime extra in these inflation ridden….retirement years. Some influencers seem to prefer to act like we don’t exist. Thanks for understanding.

What do you think about decorating for the season/holiday?? Do you decorate around your everyday decor?? Or have decor all over? (If that makes sense)
@JulieKhuu5 ай бұрын
I only swap out minor decor and use the rest along with seasonal items. Pillows, throws, some curtains- these get rotated twice a year. I one really decorate for Xmas, but most of my decor stays put 😅
