HOW TO CREATE YOUR DREAM SPACE: How to Choose the Perfect Color Palette (Episode 3)
Welcome back everyone! We are currently in Week 3 of our series- How to Create Your Dream Space. Week 1 was all about function. Week 2 was about finding your style and dissecting the common themes to help inspire the look you are after. Today’s video is all about color!
Nothing is as personal as color. Choosing the right color palette for your space is probably one of the most daunting tasks for homeowners and one that I get asked repeatedly to help with in the comments. Color has the ability to elicit strong feelings when you walk into a room. It can make you feel happy, sad, energized, focused, confident, or cool depending on how you use color in your space.
Choosing a color palette that reflects your home, lifestyle and needs is probably one of the most fun, yet challenging aspects to interior design. If you have ever wondered what color palettes are the best fit your style- this video is for you!
Join me for next week’s video: EP. 4 | How to Measure Your Space and Scale Furniture to Fit Perfectly!

I once read that if everything in your space is something you love then the space will inherently reflect you, you don't need to ask yourself if it goes with the other things in that space, it will all come together as it carries your energy.

I just recently covered my sofa in a banana yellow. I'm not sure of the colors for the two wing back side chairs. Any suggestions. I thought of black and white stripe or, peacock blue back and a neutral light color for the front.

Same but further along! My colors are jewel tones. 1640 sq ft white blank canvas condo! And being an artist during the epidemic I hit the jackpot with time to pull it all together! I am almost finished with major changes almost complete in my new kitchen and family room! Jewel tones used for this entire area: Chinese Red, dark teal, amethyst, black and Chinese Red with crystal knobs, deep purportedly stain on cabinets. Granite is black with beautiful large off white, red, and slight purple! Sounds crazy but it is turning out like a show stopper. It’s what I call my home a jewelry box!

Julie, would you ever consider doing a video on paint color in different locations in the house. For instance, light blue color in the west side of house vs. North side of house and the difference in the hue?

Your lighting and furnishings will alter the color perceived in the room DM. So even if I showed you colors in my space, they may look different in yours. But I do love this idea! Need to figure out how to effectively convey it 🤔

Thank you Julie! Best advice...choose paint color last. I’ve been doing it all wrong. I would choose what was “in” rather than what I like & match furnishings to that color, i.e., walls that had brownish/yellowish undertones when I really like cool undertones. No wonder my house never felt like me!

Hello 👋🏼 Julie! MaryAnna here! This video is a stroke of genius! The biggest mistake I ever made was painting an entire nursery orange - we pulled it from the crib bedding. It was actually quite cute, but sometimes overwhelming. I learned that with such a bright, vibrant color - an accent wall or furniture in orange would have been enough. Live and learn 😆🤣😂 I’m still not afraid of color! I’m getting ready to order bright yellow velvet curtains for a Dining Room! The room itself will be Benjamin Moore Ewing Blue. I have a HUGE cow painting that everyone loves when they see it! This room is gonna have flavor 😉

Your descriptions, explanations are so clear and understandable, thank you! My big decorating mistake was painting dark walls and not having the correct lighting. After we had that house staged to sell last year have I finally started to understand it..…and now I’ve found you💜I am going with white walls now though along with bright, open, calming spaces. This presentation was organized in such a way that anyone could comprehend what Julie was sharing with us. In a few months I am going to renovate my 20 year old master bath! For me, the undertaking is daunting. My worst design mistake was choosing a semi checkered pattern tile floor that was whit and beige in our kitchen. I had 3 children, a dog and a cat! What was I thinking! It was too light and I had to mop it almost everyday. A very costly mistake.

I've always found colors fascinating and this is such a great video. Personally I don't like to wear a lot of colorful clothes but rather insert color into my shoes and accessories and it seems I apply the same logic to my interior design where all the surfaces and big pieces are pretty neutral and all the color is in the decor items. Works for me.

Julie this is a great video! Not only did it lead me to reflect on what I like but also brought out what I don't like, that's equally as important. You gave us great examples. I have always loved red, even as a child. If I had massive rooms I might use it as a paint color but in my small cottage, it's an accent color; I'd like to bring in more. I am not drawn to monochromatic. I think I'll watch the video again. Thank you! Need to select a new couch.

I have lived in my house for twenty years and raised my two sons in the house which is about 45 years old. As a family- we have put a lot of wear and tear on the house. I am currently updating some critical things like windows, heating system, and roof. Those projects are just getting organized with contractors. I am now looking into refurbishing my kitchen and then the master bathroom. I also need to repaint the entire interior and update most of the flooring/carpeting. Thank u so much for your inspiring video..👍🏼..I think the biggest mistake I've made through the years is..following trends..what looks great in someone else's home may not be right for mine..I trust my gut more..and gravitate towards the colors and styles ..that reflect my own personality ..as far as colors go..I look to nature as an inspiration..if a room reads too cool ..I'll add warm wood tones ..such as a live edge table plants etc..if the room reads too dark..I can change the mood of the room with warmer lighting etc..I do love to see .."what's in" I can mix things up...with cool accessories..that I love

Julie, I'm REALLY loving this series. I've been waiting patiently for this one. QUESTION: What do you do if you can't choose your wall color? Bought a previously owned house in excellent condition. But the livingroom main area is two stories. Its painted, including the ceiling, in a warm cafe au latte color which I like but the wooden floors are a similar color (2005 vibes) AND my leather furniture is also very similar color. It covers all of the common areas of the home. I like it but it's a bit too much for me now. I didn't choose the color but have to work with it bc it'll be too expensive right now to paint it . I love colors like greens and blues and some orange but really need something more calming. Sorry for the long post. Thanks

Since you have such a monochromatic space I would say try using accessories and wall art to draw interest. Source cool artwork, scour your local TJ Max and Marshals for interesting flower pots and use those to add a few plants in order to add that pop of green.

You can layer color first with area rugs to define space and help give your floors/ sofas some definition. Then add more texture and color with curtains and drapery panels to help define the walls and windows. Have fun with accents, but if the walls read “warm”, cooler colors like blues and greens may fight it. Try muted shades like sage and powder blues for a calming effect Claude!

Loving this series currently building a house and picking colour schemes. Planning on a pastel blue (glass slipper by Benjamin Moore) for main living area as a cheerful uplift. My husband suggested a cognac loveseat which at first I thought would contrast too much but after watching this I think might be good balance. Love how thought out this video was, Julie you are always full of the best information.

I am an artist and a psychology professor...I know the effects color can have on mood etc. When I was young when I was a student I lived far north and being a southerner I was cold everywhere all the time. I learned to paint my bedrooms in a pale yellow to keep,me warm, and happy...those cloudy cold days got me down less surrounded by a pale warm yellow. I love ocean colors and traditional English BLUE AND WHITE PORCELAIN so I always combine blue and white with the yellow in my bedroom...and have done in various homes over the decades. I love working with color and enjoy painting canvases to combine the colors of my rooms...I live for color in my home, wardrobe, my art work, my garden.

My colour mistake was getting excited to finally paint my walls white (wanted white walls for years and this new landlord was letting me paint two bedrooms) and I picked the flattest and whitest white. It was okay but I really should have researched whites! I've since bought my own place and it came with beautifully painted white walls and it is actually a grayish white but you wouldnt know unless you held white next to it. It's much more luxurious and soft looking than my harsh white walls I painted.

Yes! The white you want is typically not the white on paper! Takes a trained eye to see the difference and unfortunately a lot of mistakes to get it right. Boy, have I been there 🤦🏼‍♀️

... What a treat this Series is, ...Oh my. I am recentlysubscribed, so I'm catchingup, lol ! I have such a variety of colours ,in my lounge, but the dominant ones are deep red, various shades of greens, very soft " cream- yellow", even a shade of blue ...and these colours were pulled from a piece I purchased, a painted console ( purchased from a friend, I'd admired it from the moment I saw it in her home ) and it set the tone for the rug, pillows, throws and other design elements. The remaining pieces in my lounge are pretty much " neutral ", ( various shades of soft white/ crream/ chiffon, etc) so it makes this particular piece " the star of the show", lol. I chose a very soft subtle yellowish cream colour for the wall it sits against, and the other walls are soft cream. ..so I guess it's ' the focal wall" ... 😉🙂

1st off, I must say I love your videos. You have definitely helped me a lot! My biggest mistake was buying a very expensive couch in the wrong color. I really wanted off white & got an ugly gray color instead. It's not even a good gray! But, we are moving soon & I will probably try to sell this one. I love contrast, so I think I'll go with the Black & white scheme!

I'm hoping you touch on when husbands and wives have opposite tastes in color. For instance, I love colorful art filled spaces, my husband is very "meat n potatos" - he loves his neutrals. We just bought a large log cabin on land and I'm so confused (so much brown)! It's harder than you know meshing the two, especially when (for instance) I show him a beautiful throw rug or pillow and he almost barfs. Help! Edit: omg you inspired me with this video - I found so much here that could work for us both, thank you!

I am such a red person. I have just been fortunate enough to of found a great 3 piece living room set which is red leather. But, for the fear of being matchy matchy, I plan on putting the chair in my she cave and getting a different chair for my living room. I had to get the whole set or there would have been no sale price. Also, I am incorporating black, and gold in my living room and throughout my home. To me, an ideal home would be to have lots of rooms to explore different colours and themes. Have fun spaces, if that makes any sense. LOL

Painting is the most cost effective treatment Jen. I have a dark wood frame bed with a sleigh shaped headboard. My husband and I are closing on our home this month and we’re thinking about the style in each room. I was thinking perhaps painting the room (3 sides) a deep dark turquoise-navy. I found art that has that color, white, and hints of dustily pink. We were thinking crisp white linens, and maybe one pillow and one chair in the dusty rose (already have the chair!). We have two small awkward windows that aren’t centered to a wall (and are small) so we are going to drape tall and wide and both and then fake drapery over a nonexistent window so we have drapery flanking the bed on one wall. The 4th wall has a built in closet which is white. We are hesitant to paint it because we will likely want a bigger home in a few years. Do you think having white bedding, white printed rug, and one white built in closet is too much white? I wish I could share photos in these comments!

No I think you actually have your room well planned out. I think the dusty pink and white will create an amazing contrast against your turquoise-navy 3 walls, and the white will actually ground your color scheme. Let's wait to see what Julie thinks, but I think your color scheme works

The walls, ceiling and shelves were all painted with flat white and the shelves are chipped and scuffed up. The only things I won’t be touching in there is the hardwood floors and white trim. Walls and ceiling will be white but I’m exploring a color for the shelves. Looks like I have to look at the food and spices that will fill the shelves to inspire the right color - burgundy, hunter green, teal, blueberry blue. 😊

1) how do you choose your colors if your walls are already freshly painted with neutral white and grey-ish blue? 2) How do you choose or change color pallets from living room to bedroom to kitchen to bathroom? I'm thinking I want to change the pallet from room to room. But all the rooms still have to tie together. 3) How do you encorporate other materials into you color pallet, like gold, brass, steel, leather, fur, texture ? I don't know which materials or colors I should use to get a modern style. I think I have several steel items. But I also want to use pop accent. Color yellow. I want to use whites , should I use wood? I'm not sure if wood will fit into my pallet. What about black color? How many colors can I have in a pallet? Should the rug and the painting match?
