One of the builds I'v played over the years was a light combat arts + dark magic. The attribute listing allows you to go to 6 dark magic fairly easily, so you can pick up the aura of weekness at lvl 6 which reduces the str of enemies by 25 % (mind you this is *before* armour ratings at the such is calculated, so you reduce the base damage of enemies, meaning that depending on how good your armour is, this is actually a bigger bonus than it seems) than you dumb the rest of your points into dex and agility, meaning you won't get hit and if you do, the dmg of the enemy is reduced greatly. Obviously some points in str and stamina as well so you deal good damage and can tank some dmg and you are good to go. This effectively lets you easily solo the iron nightmares you encounter in the late late game, since their usual 1000+ dmg numbers drop down to roughly 400, if they even manage to hit you. And as a cute bonus, there is a dagger you can get in shadow of the phoenix that attacks super fast and has a trigger for the Death spell at lvl 12, so 300 flat damage if I recall correctly. Oh and the chances to trigger that spell are impacted by your int, which you will have leveled, since you took lvls in Dark magic. And if you spec into light blunt weapons as well (you can do that if you only take lvl 6 in dark magic + death) than you can also get a hammer that also has a magical effect for those late game iron ones. Very Fun build with which you can use those lvl 20 late game armours and weapons + really strong debuffs on the enemies.

I tried adding captions to this video. Not sure if it's a good or bad idea yet, but I think it could be nice for people who can't watch with audio or for parts where I maybe talk to quickly. Let me know what you think.

It feels so surreal to be part of community that still has "101" guide eventhough playerbase seems to be consistently either dying out or just generally letting the game go. Only chosen few stay, and I salute you :D Thanks Mr. W

As for my fav build the white magic is always high and going for an ice priest is THE way. Paladin of course is strong and I've played some iterations of it. Never liked ranged builds as I've found them lacking (before SotP) as they never applied any effects and vanilla auras were not so cool for an archer as they were for warriors in my opinion. From funhouse builds I think ice magic slow + invisbility + Feign death are hilarious to pull off but hey, we all know you're gonna pick Heavy armour char.

I really loved my tank build with Heavy combat + Necromancy for that aura of life steal :D lots of quick save and loads on chests tho so likely wont do that anymore xD

I used the Paladin type build for my first playthrough and I loved clearing all the maps without the need of an army. My second playthrough (the one I completed SotP with) was a light combat first, elemental magic second for the first part of OoD, and after reaching lvl 8 in light combat for the shadow armor, I went full Ice and later full elemental in SotP. It made the whole game easy, first by being able to outfight most of the enemies, and later with the objectively broken aoe ice spells.

Mage with Ice and afair Death + Necromancy was pretty dope for me. Also Mind Magic with Crossbow (focusing on creating illusions which from Shadow of the Phoenix also deal damage but in Breath/Order sticking mostly to crossbow with any effect ex. iceburst or freeze as they were still triggering with clones).

I think i will never forget first build i made as a kid. I wanted a warrior who uses magic. Lots of magic, so innocently i put points into heavy armour, blade weapons, elemental magic, ice fire and earth. Then i wanted to heal so i took white magic and life, then boons. I couldn't finish that game, and my uncle (from who i even got the game) gave me advance not to spread my points like that. Since then beating the game was never a problem for me since heavy fighting makes you one man army anyway. Now im trying to combine archer and nature, for using regeneration aura (that spell if op) and some summons. Wnich is also enhnced by reimagined mod. It's going good

I personally found myself developing my character through light combat arts and white magic (Life and Boons) in the first part of the game. Only recently I decided to specialize purely in Life. For the second part of the game, I choose the Fire Warrior preset.

elemental - fire, ice; White Magic - Life (either boons or earth magic as skillpointdump) Thats the build i played the most (idk, like a dozen or so playthroughs) and thats the one i had the most fun with. It really is a jack of all trades build with insane AOE-dmg and healing. Singletarget is also not too shabby. For buildings you will need elementals but they work fine for that purpose. Also Black Magic - Death and White Magic - Life is quite fun (either curses or boons as a skillpointdump); build i played very often too. Also my first build. Pretty similar actually to the first build in what it can do up until the very late game (elemental works primarily with wave skills; this one with aura of pain); once you get aura of pain tho (i think its available with rank 10) this build is a bit more hands-off and therefore easier to passive-farm (which is a huge thing in spellforce). Never quite liked warriors in the first spellforce. They where a bit too one-dimensional for my liking and what they could do was fairly limited (very high singletargetdmg but no aoe-capabilities to speak of). Once played a paladin, just like you suggest and yeah. That build definitly works great. But yeah. I was definitly on the magic side of things with this game for the avatar (heroes: completely different story).

Heavy Warrior + any single offensive magic is really strong, especially Death, Ice or Fire. One build I like for Free Game is the Chaos Mage, which starts out as a weaker support build, which is less of an issue in Free Game where you can grind easier maps and are rarely ever on your own. This build is Black Magic - Death and White Magic - Life and then one other. I took Necromancy, but boons is probably stronger. For BoW I've tried to do a mix of white and ice mage, also more of a supporting build. The most cursed item class in TOoD (pretty sure they got dropped in the expansions) is spears. Spears require Heavy Combarts arts and Light Combat - Piercing to wield, all for 2-handed weapons (No shield synergy) that aren't even that great. Generally as a Mage, especially late game you don't need to spec into combat arts for good gear, as high level mage gear is quite solid stat wise.

Light Combat Arts + Piercing weapons Heavy Combat Arts White Magic + Boons Liked to use this one because it let you use spears, which are the best weapon in the game from what I found. Used it only in free game mode though, since you can't easily get spears for each and every level in the campaign mode.

My favourite build has got to be an ice/life/boon mage. Apart from the few mobs completely resistant to ice magic you can solo almost anything, when you do use an army it stays alive forever and most important of all: Faster running from boons :D

Really strong build indeed. Devensive on 8 might also be really good here. You will not need healing level 20 and boon sould be also not needed to push to 20. i prefer 20 ice (40/100 points) 16 boon, healing 12 (44/100). then you can put 8 inot defensive for enlightenment. Makes your mana much bigger .... i tryed to squeeze more point´s for defensive to get to 10 or 12 but i found that reaching 12 is hard and 10 gives you "just" mana steal aura wich is ok but in my opinion not needed since you got normal mana steal. should be enough. so yeah 20 ice, 16 boon, 12 healing, 8 devensive is the best optimisation i could come up with.

The strongest build i know in the order of dawn is going all out on heavy combat arts, all points you get into strength and stamina, with the remaining point in dexterity so you'll at least be able to hit things, it's not that good early, but at the end of the game you'll solo the map (unless something's using ice spells)

My favourite build is definetly light combat arts - light blade weapons and elemental magic - fire and ice. Especially in TOoD, where (especially in the first half of the game) some really good weapons require those skills and later after finishing Rift and Farlons hope and obtaining blizzard spell and rain of fire. But to use them I always had to prioritize magic, because they require lvl 12, but still worth it

I want to add something for beginners, if you are going for a pure build (one skill), you will have enough attribute points by the end of the game that you can't use them because of the cap, so in a scenario like pure warrior you will have max Strength/Stamina, so you can waste them on Dexterity/Agility. Which means also, you can easily use some skills like Heavy Combat - Ranged Combat, because both of them require strength and both of them benefit from each others attributes (Warriors' weakness is their low hit chance, Rangers can get overwhelmed because of the low health pool), same goes for the magic skills (Mind - White, Elemental - Black) like Wormic mentioned.

My favorite build is something I call "White Ice Spellcaster." Just pick Elemental - Ice, and White magic - Life, and one other (Boon or Nature). You increase the survivability of your allies in two ways: 1 By healing them. 2 By stopping enemy attacks by freezing them. Downside: You are really vulnerable if enemies manage to get to you.

My first build back in the day was just the default Flame Warrior, which made a lot of things really easy. Recently I've tried out a few other ones, from a pure Black Mage with every school of black magic and some light blunt weapons for some of the staffs in game. The other one was actually a paladin as well, with heavy blunt wepons and white life magic. Was neat, but sadly I played this one in the breath of winter, which I find really annoying on some maps. Sadly, there are a few maps in the game, where you will be forced to either fight alone or only with your (mostly) underleveled heroes. These maps are what's keeping me from playing a ranger or mental mage, even though I would really like to try it out.

Always loved theme of dark ranger and played several times with necro archer build, never disappointed. You have great summons, pretty nasty spells and you can pew-pew with some bow or xbow that often have some effect on hit, like poison which does a lot of damage. Ice is probably the best element for melee character hybrids due to frozen effect on shield to tank better. You maybe not gonna obliterate everything with waves, but you are gonna be almost unkillable powerhouse(paladin is still better i think, thorns and healing are too good).

I made a black magic wizard, solo-ing most of the game, with Death, Boons & Necromancy.. casually added some side heroes to be a little faster.. I made heavy combat warrior, large blade.. and casually 2 points of light combat, for berserk & blessing.. so effin powerful, mid game, solo-ing waves waves of undead in Northwindwalls, not even bothering with Boons or the army on the side, just 150-200 dmg per hit, without berserk or warcry (that adds up to 300). I made a bows ranger with piercing weapons, 600 dmg with bows, and 1000 with true shot.. and about 100 dmg each hot with some dagger, with 130% speed or 115% speed (different daggers).. Bottom line, whatever you make, it will be powerful, but don't go too fast to assign points early.. you will not need them and effects are not directly visible, just wait until you get new sets of stuff, then assign the points.. And don't buy anything until late in the game, because you'll find better things in drops from monsters.. and Max out the 2 main stats for your character.. and add one more for extra benefit.. like Strength and Stamina for Heavy Combat, then Dexterity.. the ratio would be strength 10, more than stamina, then stamina 5 more than dexterity.. so on and forth..

For TOoD: I have found white magic for attack speed buff and light blade weapons to be really strong. Buffing Ur heroes that you summon makes you really fast and strong. Plus you have better armor penetration. With heavy weapons the disadvantage is you hit hard but sometimes the enemy simply dodges ur attack. I always really liked necromancy so that is my preferred route rather than elemental magic. I also tend to save up attributes and skills if I don't have spells or weapons to use them for. So I don't waste them. Just have fun and try out new builds, weapons and skills :)

Order of Dawn - heavy or light combat, you become one man army , op as hell, particularly later on in the game Breath of Winter - mage, fire and ice , is op with the mobs that are in the game , and is a lot easier to clear maps Rise of the Phoenix - both combat and mage are good here, but mage ( fire , ice and white magic boons in particular ) is a bit better considering u have a lot of mobs are killed easy with fire or light magic. The choice is yours !

just finished a new BoW Character . its almost as powerfull as the Necro Mental Boon Build Its A Mind control / Deff / Healer Mind Magic 12 Enchantment 12 Def 12 Offensive 12 White Magic 6 Life 6 Why life only lvl 6 ? Because of Charisma my friend my lvl 6 Divine Heal or Strg Aura are stronger then the ones of the full healer . And because of the Spell " Charisma" you can go even highter with it . Killed the Fial Darg solo by Controling 2 lvl 20 Werewolf Champions and 3 lvl 25 Fire Drakes that you find in the pits . They hit Like Trucks and you can heal them upp with youre lvl 6 heal . you can also play this char very offensive by buffing youreself up . The only skill i used with offensive mind magic is Aura of Hypnosis ( in Sotp AoE of Hypnosis) ! you just run in , Freez every one up , give them a little hit so they start moving again ( Take Control ) , and wipe out the camps with out any one stopping you . this build is so mutch fun and will end in Sotp looking like this Mind Magic 20 Enchantment 20 Def 12 Offensive 20 white Magic 13 Life 13 Heavy Combat 1 Light Combat 1

As for order of dawn and breath of winter campaign or free play... Maxing heavy combat arts is hands down easiest way to play but i dont know if most enjoyable... As for shadow of phoenix... i guess AoE spells can be worth to try but it is just late game... My personal build is Heavy combat(armor + one weapon) + Ranged(bow or crossbow)... Almost as good in melee as pure Heavy...(some shields provide bonus to speed so in fact it is best for melee) but it has ranged option for fights that you dont want to be in front line....
