when i make the loop to hang i do a chain stitch, as long as you want. then slip stitch in the same loop then finish

Am I the only person who has had trouble with the three picots after the chain 7 step?? Mine are wonky and nowhere near as balanced as in the tutorial. Which is very good. If I do the slip stitch into only ONE of the chain 3 stitch (as shown), the inner hole is way too big for the 2 other picots. I find that it helps to slip stitch into TWO of the chain 3 stitch (V-shape) but I still have to block it like crazy to get anything approching the lovely snowfalke as pictured. I'm using a cotten-blend yarn and 3mm crochet. Would it help if I used heavier yarn?

I know this is a very late reply but I had the same problem, just started making snowflakes, and tried with both an acrylic yarn and a cotton , both medium-light weight. Cotton and cotton blends don't work nearly as well as acrylics I am guessing, as the latter is bouncier so take the shape of the three picots better. Still needed to block my cotton one heaps, still not great, and washing and shaping the acrylic ones help. Also the thicker the yarn and matching hook would probably give best results. Just my thoughts .( I might stick to crocheting stars for this Christmas!) Hope yours went well in the end.
