I had learn to do this many years ago before computers(lol)while bedridden in the hospital for 3 months ( during a pregnancy). The housekeepers there taught me how and after so many years had forgotten how , so I was so happy to find your tutorial. and am in the process of teaching my sister in law how to . Thanks . You were a big help .

I made broomstick lace baby blankets years ago with a real broomstick that had been sharpened like a pencil. I loved it. Your videos are the best I’ve ever viewed on KZbin. Your directions are soooo clear. Haven’t crocheted since I took lessons from a local lady who was amazing. Thank you so much!!!! I’m starting to crochet again.

Thanks for the kindness. You are correct - it's just a matter of preference with regards to pulling the loops off all at once or in groups of 4, 5, etc.

Hello! You make a great point about specific broomstick lace needles. My grandmother had a Boye one that she gave to me years ago, but I completely forgot about until you mentioned it. Thanks for the feedback - and glad the video could help.

Thanks for the kindness. Wish I invented it. :) Broomstick lace is one of those vintage type of stitches that is making a comeback. It was one of my grandmother's favorite stitches. Thank you for stopping by!

I am so going to make a shawl for one of my two sisters with this stitch. Both my sisters have been crocheting for well over 40 years and I just started two months ago. I never saw either of them do this one, so I will flaunt my skills.

Thanks for the kindness. You're right - it's a great stitch that can be made into a nice scarf or shawl for both casual or an evening look.

You can use any size knitting needles - smaller ones will make smaller loops and larger ones will make larger loops. It's kind of fun playing around with the sizes to see the different effects. Glad the video could help :)
@naztazia15 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I love this stitch too - think I like the broomstick lace so much because it is truly vintage. I've seen patterns from the late 1800s that use this stitch. Nice way to preserve history.

BTW.... I just saw two other videos on this stitch and you are the only one that told which part of the yarn should go on the front part of the broomstick. Those are the details that make your videos just that bit better as tutorials.

Glad the video could help. It's such a pretty stitch. Think my favorite part is that this stitch is truly vintage - I've seen patterns from the late 1800s using this.

@simplejoys4 Tension - you'll want to keep your loops consistent. That means not too tight but not too loose. For every loop that goes onto the knitting needle, pull gently on the yarn to tighten each loop around the knitting needle, but consistency is the key. If you pull the yarn too hard, it will be difficult to get the loops off the needle. If you don't tighten enough, the loops end up different sizes and look messy. Takes a few times to get the right feel for the amount to pull each loop.

@MoonieMage Thanks for the kindness and glad it the video could help. And I totally agree - the broomstick lace is a lot easier to make than it looks :)

Thank you. I did this stitch many years ago. You did a wonderful job explaining how the stitch is done. I am so excited to give it a try again.
@naztazia12 жыл бұрын
Yes you would need to put about 125 loops on the needle for the size needed for a baby blanket. If you need a longer knitting needle, you can substitute with a school ruler, or you can make a needle out of a bamboo craft dowel, or they do sell circular knitting needles that have a fishing-wire type of extension on the end, allowing for more stitches.

I have started a scarf several times in different patterns.....but now I am going to rip out what I have so far and begin this one. Your verbal instructions as well as video are very clear .....thanks!

Thanks for dropping by. I know exactly what you mean. Actually the hardest part is trying to coordinate the hands and fingers with the big knitting needle, crochet hook and yarn all at the same time.

Thank you so much. I kept finding instructional videos that over complicated this stitch. This one was nice and simple.

@carmellac2000 Thanks for the kindness. Absolutely you can use multiple colors! If you want to do a stripe pattern, it's best to do your colors changes on the row that starts off with just one loop on the hook. Also, multiple color yarn (gradient, varigated, etc.) look really nice with this stitch.

You can do several things. If you get a true broomstick lace needle, they are rather long and can fit all the loops needed for a baby blanket. You can also make one out of a bamboo dowel found in craft stores. Some people substitute a school ruler, or anything flat & solid like a ruler, for the knitting needle. The other thing is you can get a large knitting needle that has a fishing wire-type extension on the end of it (circular knitting needle), allowing for more stitches.

Yes. You know, you bring up a good point. In some parts of the world they do call this stitch by a few other names. Even in some older books I've seen the "Broomstick Lace" stitch called the "Peruvian Stitch" as well as the "Peacock Stitch." In Australia I think they call it "Jiffy Lace."

Thanks for the kindness! You won't believe this - but it's actually Lion Brand 100% Wool yarn (cream color) dyed with -- Kool Aid! Cherry, Orange and Grape flavored. If you hand wash the scarf, the color doesn't fade or come out. The fruity smell from the Kool-Aid fades after about a week from dyeing it as well. The best part is you get the nicest gradient patterns and shades.

Donna, thanks so much for this tutorial. As a beginner, working with such a large knitting needle and a crochet hook I felt like I was working with two left hands. BUT! I conquered it and I just love this stitch. You are an awesome teacher. So easy to follow. I will continue to learn more from you.

@craftsjbnpetlover Hello! Sorry for the delay in response. The knitting needle is easy - you can make one by getting something that looks like a thick bamboo dowel and file down the one end to a point. Then sand it down good so it doesn't catch the yarn, and put some hand cream or other lubricant and/or sealant on it. As far as crochet hooks, they are easier to buy rather than make. Amazon sells them online, as do most craft stores usually in the yarn department.

Thanks! Size 35 or 50 are the "big" sized knitting needles that usually work nicely with worsted weight yarn. And as you stated, a smaller sized one (e.g. size 19) will make a smaller version of the stitch. You know, the name "broomstick lace" comes from the fact that ladies in the past put the stitches on the end of a wooden broomstick handle instead of a large knitting needle. It's something to consider if you don't want to get a large knitting needle!

@TwinzOfOMG Thank you for the kindness! The yarn is Lion Brand's 100% wool yarn in an off-white color that I hand dyed quite literally with several "flavors" of Kool-Aid. Regular Kool-Aid packets (unsweetened) are awesome for dyeing wool yarn. I believe it was a combo of pink lemonade, grape, orange, and cherry. One of these days I'll have to make a video on it (although I'm sure there are plenty on KZbin for it now). Take care!

Queen Anne's Lace is a beautiful stitch - a combination of chains and double crochets. I'll have to put that on my "to do" list for videos!
@naztazia15 жыл бұрын
Hi - you will still have to do another 5 single crochets inside the initial set of loops. The chain 1 is more of a slip stitch that helps hold the first sets of loops for each row in place. And when you work on the row after that, you'll just pull loops up from the 5 single crochets below and ignore the previous row's chain 1.
@naztazia15 жыл бұрын
You can do the broomstick lace in the shape of a triangle. You can do it gradually, by decreasing 1 or 2 stitches on each end - thus taking only 3 loops off, then 2 loops off, then 1 on each end. Or you can completely slip stitch and/or skip over where you'd normally do the first and last set of 5 loops. Not exactly easy, but do-able.

Literally started crocheting yesterday and I'm half way done with this scarf already! Thanks for the tut, much love
@naztazia15 жыл бұрын
Absolutely a smaller knitting needle would work just fine - and as you mention - it would just make the loops smaller. You could also do it the "vintage" way and use a wooden broomstick handle (that's how the stitch obtained its name). Even a thick dowel would work.
@naztazia14 жыл бұрын
@sheilascrafts Thanks for stopping by! You're right - everyone says broomstick lace seems difficult at first, but by the second or third row you become a pro :)
@naztazia15 жыл бұрын
To decrease you need to be on a row that you'd normally start to pull up loops. This time however you would "reverse slip stitch" in the first 5 sc (crocheting the normal slip stitch backwards). Then on the 6th sc, you'll start pulling up your loops. Do that until almost the very end. Now completely skip the last 5 sc. For the next row, you would do your normal pulling off loops in groups of 5 and do 5 sc. You'll have 2 less groupings per row. Do this pattern for any row you want to decrease.

@alexandra21eames Absolutely you can knit a scarf and insert the broomstick lace in as desired. As a matter of fact, just this past week I saw a crochet magazine from Asia, and in it the lady was wearing a traditional knitted sweater, but it had the broomstick lace stitch for several rows as a band across the chest area. It was absolutely gorgeous! So your idea will work perfectly :)

I've been crocheting for a while now but never could get Solomon’s Knot or Broomstick Lace. I used to teach a Bible class to some Sr Citizens & one day a nice lady brought in a long-handled broom to teach me to make lace. Between her poor memory & the very long broom handle, we both ended up with a few unexpected whacks to our heads as my teacher would suddenly change her mind which direction to go! I like your hollow plastic knitting needle much better! I love your inspirational videos!!

Thanks for the feedback! The easiest place to change colors is at the end of the row where there is only 1 loop remaining on your normal crochet hook (at the end after you've just done all of your sets of 5 single crochets). This might seem like an odd spot because it's actually on the left-hand side of your work (normally you change colors on the right-hand side of your work), but it seems to work well. Hope this helps.
