Thank you! I forgot where exactly to find the 3rd loop and wanted to make more hats like one I already have & love but in different colors. I found the pattern even but couldn't figure out how to get it to look exactly like the one I previously made. I needed the version that is worked in the round and has a stretchy, knit look to it. Monster Butters when you reach the end of the row you will chain 2 and turn your work. The you will work the next row of half double crochet into the third loop. Be aware that when turning your rows the third loop will be on the front of your work.

If you work all in one direction in rounds then the back of the piece is smooth. If you work in back and forth rows, then the back of the piece looks like the front of your work.

why does it look like you are doing the third loop in front in rows, but in the back when working in rounds? All other videos show the third loop in the back, and this works for me, but I can't get my hook into the loop in front. Confused....

I am. When you are working in rounds the third loop is located on the back of your work because we work on in one direction, but when working in rows you turn your work so the third loop is now located on the front of the work below the front loop. Video that show the loop in the back are working all in one direction.

The yarn over slip stitch is worked through the back loop only. At least that is how I like to work it. If you want to work it through the 3rd loop on the front then it would be like this.

I cannot stand this stitch. I always get confused on the placement because it seems easy to identify the 3rd loop, but isn’t. Somehow mine always looks inside out. I was hoping this video would clarify that issue, but it was still a little difficult for me, because the yarn is the same color as the hook. And I even enlarged it. Just a thought to keep in mind, for future videos. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Thank you. This is one of my first video. It can be tricky because after working one row it starts to look like you are working in the back loop only because the front and backloop are twisted forward and the third loop is in the place that you would normally see the back loop.

I turned the sound off and just focused on the visual aspect and that helped me tremendously. You don’t want to go on the inside of the V you wanna go on the outside to make a decorative arrow kind of pattern. I haven’t tried it yet. I’m about to, hope that helps

This looks like using the back loop in the round. I don’t know what you are calling ‘third’ loop.

Your are correct it does look like I am crocheting into the back loop in the round this is because the top 'v' of the loop has turned forward and the third loop is where a back loop would normally be. The difference is the front of the stitch you can see the entire 'v' that would normally be the top of the stitch. If I was just crocheting into the back loop only you would only see a horizontal bar (the front loop) on the front of your work instead of seeing the entire 'v'.

This is not how I was taught at all, you skip the v and go to the back loop. You are saying the back loop but then using the front?? This is confusing

It depends on if you are working in the round or if you are turning at the end of the row. I am working into the third loop or the middle bar. When you are working in the round the middle bar is on the back of the stitch. If you are working in back and forth rows then the middle bar is on the front of the work.
