Oh no! We're you able to find another solution? I also have to be very careful with the crochet hook. I try to poke the holes a little farther from the edge so the flip-flop doesn't break.

There is a possibility the sole can tear. During the initial poking through, take it slow and be careful. I think if you have a strong enough needle or crochet hook, you could use any kind of flip flop.

Can you make up for the size being too large by making the holes emerge farther from the edge?

You can make it any size. Using a measuring tape, figure out the measurements and adjust so there is uniform distance between each stitch. You can use any pattern after the foundation stitch is crocheted on to the sole of the shoe. I hope this helps!
