How to Cross Pollinate Dragon Fruit

I purchased 5 Halley's Comet dragon fruit from Home Depot in November of last year. The northern Califonnia grower incorrectly stated on the tag that the Halley's Comet was self-pollinating. I'm sure that there are many of us that will not be successful growing dragon fruit, so I contacted the nursery and told them what I learned on your channel and the Spicey Exotics website. I asked the grower to please change the tags and to please consider carrying Vietnamese White in order for us to cross pollinate our Halley's Comet. They are looking into the matter now. woa, while learning about pollination I came across ur vids. I think these plants my dad has been "carrying around" are dragon fruit. Came from his Grandma. probably near 100 year old plants. he literally takes them indoor and outdoor every year. Heater in the barn just to keep the plants warm in winter. red cactus like fruit which is yummy.

Congrats on your first bloom! I remember how excited I was when I had my first bloom and was staring at the flower sitting in a chair for it to open. Pollinating it the first time with a q-tip, now I use a brush. It's much easier this way. I'm glad that you were able to find this video helpful, I'm always hesitant to record videos at night because its so dark but I just make it up with providing a lot of narrative to keep it interesting. 😁

wow, amazing you know what you are doing. I wonder in situations when one does not know if a variety can self pollinate or must cross pollinate, what would happen if we do both, meaning rob some of its own and some of another , would that work? of it must one or another self/ cross?

It seems pollens from self-fertile dragon fruits (such as Vietnam White) are what is usually used for cross pollination. Question, can pollens of self-sterile dragon fruits also be used for cross pollination? Thank you very much for your informative videos.

Thank you for this video. From another of your videos, I also know you can save that pollen. Now I can see how it's done. So my question is ... I have several "unknown" plants that I've rooted and just potted up. Two of them I bought and the rest were from given to me. I think it may be two varieties - American beauty and Halley's comet, but .. no idea. So there are 8 plantings, but none of them are marked and no way for me to know at this time. Is there going to be a way to identify a) what is the variety b) is it self-pollinator or self-sterile when they bloom or by looking at the branches? Thanks!

Where do I buy pollen? I have a red meat dragonfruit and it’s small, but I am taking care of it thanks to your videos. My plant had rust spots and the alcohol mixture from your videos did the trick👌🏻‼️ I am not sure once it blooms if it will pollenate itself, I just want to play it safe. Love your videos Richard,btbey are informative. Does it matter what color fruit the pollens came from. Read it somewhere that pollen from red flesh can be use to pollinate any varieties Is that same with pollens from flowers of other color flesh?

James, I don't plan on using it because its pollinated with vietnam white. I would be interested if I had sugar dragon pollen. That would be an interesting hybrid to me. :)

You're very welcome! If you cross-pollinate the seedlings from the fruit will be different color. Half of those seeds would be pink and white flesh dragon fruits. :)

Today I had a single flower in my plant , and the stigma was away from the anther , so I think it's self sterile , I had 20 days old frozen pollen and I used it to pollinate my flower but I also used it's osn pollen too to pollinate it . Hi Bryan, the natural pollinators at night are moths and bats. In the morning time if the bees come early enough they will also pollinate the dragon fruits. :)

Hello Richard. I have an American beauty that I have a problem with. The flowers are falling off. Do I need to cross pollinate the American beauty? I thought it could except it on pollen. I am at a loss because I have lost at least 14 flowers that have come off.

Hi Michelle, AB is a self fertile variety. It should fruit with its own pollen. If they are turning yellow and falling, this means it’s not a true American Beauty. I would suggest to start cross-pollinating it to get the fruits to set. Use any other variety of dragon fruit pollen you have growing.

That is one of the main reason why dragon fruit can’t produce fruit and fall off. The pollen is not working and you need to have another dragon fruit variety to mix the pollen to cross pollinate.

The Night Animals like bats moths and other nocturnal animals pollinate them where there non- of them on time it can't make fruit that's propably they are so big and white and some yellow in the middle to attracts animals to pollinate it.
