This is a great video for beginners. It's so helpful how she explains what she's doing and why you should or should not do certain things, to help understand the process.

I'm just getting into baking cakes and I must say, Wilton is amazing! I've been studying their videos and I bought all of my cake pans, turntable, even bake strips and my offset spatula from Wilton. I'm so excited to test everything out and bake a little 6 inch triple layer cake for my Grandma and Grandpa😊 Wish me luck!

Jesus you make it look so easy 😩 the advice was spot on though I went wrong when decorating a cake as I didn't do a crumb coat previous to properly icing it and I didn't chill the cake after adding the layers. Thank you 🙏

Curious about your thoughts on the pre-glazing of the cake with simple syrup prior to applying the crumb coat. Is this a worthwhile step? I see it recommended quite often.

@Sichard Rimmins , I'm not any expert but I've worked in professional kitchens for years and I would say yes. It keeps the cake quite moist, especially when its refrigerated and has the chance of losing moisture... But do be careful not to oversoak it as it would make the cake soggy and fall apart easily, preventing a clean slice of cake, etc. Hope I was helpful ...

I'm kinda nervous about attempting a crumb/final coat. I've only ever done it once and it did not go quite as planned! But in my defence, a) it was my first attempt and b) I was partly icing over a shop bought cake that was super crumbly. So I ended up making my crumb coat thicker and thicker to keep the crumbs in, and that meant it then didn't want to set. And because of how long it took, my buttercream started separating in my bowl :( But practice makes perfect, so I'm gonna have to give it another go! Oh - you mentioned that you use thin consistency buttercream for the crumb and final coat. If you're going to be decorating with buttercream, would you keep the leftover buttercream and use that / would you need to add more icing sugar to make it firmer? Or would you make a new batch of medium / stiffer consistency buttercream?

Hi Janice, you can use any spatula with a flat surface, it doesn't have to be angled. A knife will work if needed as well.

Newbie here, I though it looks easy to frost a cake. I tried it and peels off and mixes with the frosting and it end up looking "dirty". Maybe my cake is too crumbly? I cant make a proper spread due to the crumbs peeling off and sticking to the frosting.
@wilton
@wilton 4 жыл бұрын
Hi! Make sure that the cake has completely cooled off before you coat it. You can put it in the fridge before coating.

@@wilton I already cooled off my cake yesterday, the next day when I'm going to frost it its too crumbly. Or maybe I added very little frosting on it and I tried to spread it like that?
