I mentioned
Yarn swift amzn.to/3fyTlel
the video where i review this swift
• Stanwood Amish style Y...
I made this video because I purchased some yarn from the thrift store. and it smelled a little dusty. I wanted to show you how to take care of yarn, that might be dingy, dusty, or stinky. You can absolutely wash yarn before you use it! and if it helps you save money, or helps you save a poor helpless skien of yarn, that just wants to be loved. Then my job will be done.
THanks for watching!

I've gotten "cat" out of yarn, I used a oxygenated cleanser specifically for that purpose...... I actually dropped it in a sink of warm water with one of the Jackson Galaxy tablets (that was meant to go into a spray bottle), it was amazing!!! 😉 And there was no staining....

Going to have to get me a swift. I showed this to my son... and started the sentence, If you'd help.. that's all I got out... he goes help how? So, I put out my arms and explained how... Then was informed that I MUST be out my mind! Then he tells me, to go get a salad spinner and he'd hook it up to a drill for me LMAO! I ended up wiping my eyes here from tears from laughter... and he went off shaking his head! Thanks for this one, now I see what and why, about undoing the yarn and getting all the parts to the air and water/soap.

The secret to getting odors out of fabric or yarn is salt and Suave Rosemary Peppermint shampoo. Mix the salt, vinegar, baking soda, and the shampoo, then soak, and hand rinse it thoroughly until no more suds ☮️🌈💖 hope this helps 😊

I used knee high stockings to put cakes in. They came with a smell I didn't like. I tied the cake tight in the stocking and laundered gently and let air dry. I cut the stocking off when they were dry.

Great demo, tips & info! Love the color of that yarn! I often air yarn outside for days, laid out on racks & then rotate the yarn ever so often. I also mix several drops of lemongrass & eucalyptus essential oils, filled with H20 in a spray bottle & spritz the yarn as I rotate it. Both helps, if the yarn isn’t too far gone! Otherwise, I rewind into a hank also; so it aerates even more & actually wash if needed. 💁🏻‍♀️ Those 2 EOs, with a little laundry soap, cuts the smell of just about anything! I also put a few drops in dog bedding laundry. And of course a splash of good ‘ole vinegar. 🙌 Beautiful backyard view! 😊 Trees 🌳

I hank mine up, put it in a mesh bag & wash it like I would to block with a soak or wool soak or a baking sod solution (Do not use vinegar & baking soda in the same solution - be sure to rinse in between) , rinse and then I hang them in the sun to dry. I've also had good results adding Odo ban to the soak to both deodorizer and sanitize. Salad spinners are great for drying yarn!

Oh thank you. I bought some yarn form a thrift store some time ago and I have never use it because it has that weird smell of old yarn. It was packaged up in a plastic blanket bag with very old vintage yarn and the smell of that yarn got of everything. There are some skeins I would love to use if I can get the smell out. I'm going to try some of the things I saw on your video. Thanks again.

I learned a thing or 2! I am thinking, for those who do buy thrift store yarns, (I do not use anything but brand new yarn, because I sell my items; & you just can never be sure of the home atmospheres from which used yarns come), that even the cat smells will come out after washing & being neutralized with vinegar. Vinegar is a great neutralizer for so many things!

Thank you for this very helpful lesson, Jennifer! I also was helped by seeing you use the swift and the way you tied each hank. What a gorgeous pink cotton you rescued! My college roommate lives in Gloucester, Massachusetts, where the statue of the fisherman is. Gloucester is pronounced “Gloss-ster”. I am looking at 2 large containers of different kinds of yarn I have owned for a very long time. They definitely will need renewing and washing before I can use them. I love how you don’t just talk about helpful tips, you SHOW us!!! And that cool spinner hack is fun! Thank you again!

Love these helpful tips for cleaning yarn... Thank You for taking the time to put this video together! You and many others probably already know and use this trick... But just in case... I have a large yarn stash that I’ve put into totes to “keep it safe” . One thing that I have found works very nicely is every time I place yarn into a tote the first thing I put into my tote is a couple of dryer sheets. Then I put a couple more when it’s half full and then a couple more when it’s completely full. I’ve found that this not only prevents the yarn from getting that “old” smell but it also helps to keep bugs away 🙂

The Stanwood Amish swift is THE BEST! No mechanical parts to break and easy to set up, take down, and store. I have found the best soak for getting rid of smoke smell or residual fragrance smell is vinegar and baking soda. The amount of vinegar you use depends on how strong the odor/fragrance is. I have passed up purchasing some things at the Goodwill or thrift shops because the perfume was so strong I didn't want the hassle of trying to "destink" it.

I put the yarn outside in the sun. In California in late spring and all summer, the chances for rain or frost is basically nothing, so sometimes if the smell (like old estate sale smell) is strong, I will put it on a table outside for two weeks. It works! I rotate the skeins so that all sides are exposed several days at a time. No fading of color either!
