Hey thanks for this video. After watching I then watched a few that advocate machine wash and dry for those yarns that allow for that. What I did was pre wash with vinegar and then washed with normal detergent and scent boosters. Skeins were in my soft nylon veggie bags I use at the grocery. Result was amazing!!!

This yarn is a hand wash…but how’d the skein/hank hold up? I was afraid of knots, (which it barfed on me while using it for the SisLove Shawl)

Rebecca Acton yikes that’s a bummer... but the baking soda in a container/baggie etc sitting for a week or so seemed to do a pretty good job neutralizing the odor, that was (beyond washing) what really was the winner... and now I have them sitting in a bag with a dryer sheet... it has helped a great deal... I’m making the shawl now, I’ll be showing my progress on it today!! Fingers crossed for ya!! 💜🤗

I bought a pair of jeans once and they had a terrible “ink” smell. I thought a good soak and wash would remove it but alas it did not. I tried the freezer, the vinegar, the baking soda…. and even coke!!!!! Sadly, nothing worked and the smell was making me ill so I threw them out 😢 Now, whenever I buy clothes, I do the “sniff test” 🤣🤣

Hi, yes if I could’ve handled the yarn, the stale smoke just got me so badly, I’m an ex smoker (over 11 years) and I can’t stand the smell of cigarette smoke, especially old stale smoke, I had left the yarn in storage bags with the baking soda for over 2 weeks and they are without that smoke smell, of course the shawl I’m almost done with needs washed and blocked, but the baking soda trick worked. Thanks bunches for being here with me! 💚🤗

Thanks so much for being a great friend. Love and hugs!! 💕🤗

My mother in law just passed away and I have several totes filled with yarn. She was a heavy smoker for 60 years. I'm doing some experiments with getting rid of the odor. I've left some outside for a few days. That seems to be working although it may need more time. I've washed some skeins inside pantyhose in the washer on delicate. Again, I may need to wash it again. But after watching your video and reading the comments, I'm going to try the baking soda for a week or two. I hope it works. It's just been so frustrating so far. Thanks!

Sorry to hear of your loss… getting the smells out of yarn is definitely a toughie but I did have “better success” using baking soda in bags/totes for sure. Hope it works well enough to be able to tolerate working with the yarn then after the project is done a good wash . My shawl I made using the “stinky yarn” smells absolutely fine.. thanks for watching! 💚

Felicity Yarn Studio yes because the “baking soda without freezer” only helped a tad, I figured just freezer wasn’t going to work at all! But I was so surprised! Where did the smell go? Lol. And the baking soda and freezing the yarn was amazingly like no smell at all!! I have the two bags in the freezer, I put a little baking soda down the middle of the cake. And I have the one cake on my work table in the bag with baking soda. Gonna see how that works next Tuesday!!

Hi Karen sweetheart❣️. Guess what? When the yarn warmed up to room temp, it had a bit of the odor in it again! Bummer!! I was thinking I’ll hop in the freezer with the yarn so no smell, and with this FL heat it’d be a win, win lol. I placed the two cakes in a Winn Dixie bag, with a bounce dryer sheet on top and bottom, so it smells better while working with it.. I still have the one cake in Ziplock with baking soda and will see if the smell is gone this Tuesday(which will be one week, per Google search). Thanks so much for being here💕 hugs 🤗

Hi Kathy! Thanks for watching, I want to update you. In the following week I posted about how once the icy yarn de thawed, the smell came back, but I placed some baking soda in the bag and refrozen the yarn for about 3-4 days and it worked. I also had success with adding baking soda and letting it sit in the baggie/container for about 10 days. I am currently using that yarn for my SisLove shawl, (used up an entire cake) and the strong cigarette musty smell is gone…. The freezer alone trick didn’t completely work. 💚

If you can saturate with white vinegar and allow to dry, don't rinse, it will get rid of any odor. Once the yarn dries the bad odor and vinegar smell will dissipate. I have done this with success.

I think leaving it in the freezer in a zip lock bag may kill any invisible insect eggs / early moth infestations etc and is a good thing to do with second hand clothes and yarns. I also wonder if winding it into skeins may also help.
@TwistedStitchesShow
@TwistedStitchesShow 8 ай бұрын
I had the most success with long term odor control when I placed the skeins in baking soda and left for over a week. I did wind the yarn before I used it for the shawl I crocheted. The baking soda was difficult to shake out and I had residue that flaked off while winding the yarn. Was a bit of a mess 😊

Morynna - Yarnin’ and Darnin’ yes that’s a good idea. I had issues with Hanking up this yarn. I really wanted to experiment smell removal without washing it beforehand... but other yarns it’d probably be fine. This yarn is also a hand wash lay flat to dry so I was nervous also about ruining it🤗.

No I didn’t have an issue with smell contamination. But the best way was to place baking soda in a Tupperware type container and leave it for two weeks. I shook the container every so often, and I changed the soda after a week. I’ve used the yarn for the SisLove shawl and no funky odor… not as fresh as just bought but manageable, and after the shawl was finished a wool soak and hood as new.. FYI once the yarn returned to room temp the smell returned after freezing…

Hi O R just an update: the freezer trick worked but once the yarn warmed up to room temp the smell returned. I had a great outcome by putting yarn in a container with baking soda, I changed it after a week and put fresh soda and let sit for another week. I used this yarn this past year and the smell was almost completely gone, and it allowed me to work the yarn (I made the Half Circle Shawl by SisHomemade) without a horrible smell.
