Mortising in the drill press with a simple wood drill bit. In this woodworking video I use the drill press to cut a mortise to make a through mortise and tenon joint. I make a round corners mortise, and then I use a chisel to get a rectangular mortise so I can fit the tenon inside it. So we can use a drill press as a mortiser machine and we don't need a hollow chisel mortiser or a chain mortiser. But both a hollow chisel mortiser and a chain mortiser are craftsman tools that would do a better job.

ANOTHER fantastic demonstration of super woodworking ideas I can actually use with the tools I have. In the past I've always tried to avoid using mortise & tenon joints because they were difficult for me to get right. Using your technique of setting up the drill press has changed all that! Now I'll be using these joints as much as I always wished I could & with much better fit than ever before. THANK YOU!

Very nice, liked the easy mortice technique. The tennon gaps can be taken up with a locking wedge in the centre of the tennon, and side gaps can be covered by a filler consisting of glue and sawdust from the same wood.

If you would rather round the tenon edges, it would be quite easy to make a gauge to test the radius. All that is necessary is to use the same drill to drill a hole in some waste wood., then making a cut across the hole leaves you with gauge. I feel it is easier to round the tenon with chisel, file and sandpaper than squaring the mortise.

Personally, I don't feel that it was a mistake to not drill all the way through. Flipping the board the way you did and finishing from the other side ensured that you did not get tearout on the other side. So even if you didn't intend to do it this way, you did it the right way! Great job, again.

Actually this is the right technique to drill a mortise. No fancy solution or jigs or attachments, but just right. You might be interested to know there exist special drills which are specialized for cutting sideways. But I forgot the right name in English. The wood strip pivoting on one side is brilliant, never saw that before but I must remember. Also your piece of wood permanently inserted in your clamp is brilliant. I am going to make a number of clamps like that this very weekend.

So to avoid that, maybe try using an upspiral router bit, and only drill two pilot holes, one on each end of the mortise. Then just slide the workpiece back and forth from hole to hole, going down a little bit at a time. What do you think?

Well, the title does feel a bit like clickbait to me, since the finishing cuts are made with a chisel. I don't think the uploader meant it to be clickbait, it's probably due to language differences. Reading the title, I got the impression that the drill press would be all that was needed.
