Excellent video; I have never had to do this and was wondering how it was done. Sadly, I didn't know you had to buy a port hole Drum O or Kickport to protect the hole once its cut into the head, but that makes a lot of sense. Wish I would've watched your video prior to ordering cutter from Sweetwater.

Hey happy to hear you like the video! 🤘🏼I’m sure with your reso head cut without a drum o or Kickport it’ll still work in the same way!! As mentioned in the video, they just save it from tearing if someone kicks a mic stand or something. You can always buy one after the fact as well! Wish you happy drumming! Cheers!

On the inside of my bass skin I have a clear bit which is apparently the built-in dampener. But this seems to be around 4” so my hole will be quite central to avoid cutting the clear film… is that okay?

Yeah either way you do it will be fine. You can go through that clear film too, it won’t harm the head or make the head sound any different from cutting elsewhere on the head.

Can i use the cutter to cut the hole while the basshead is on the drum itself and it's under tension? Or should i detach the basshead from the drum and cut the hole?

Great question! I had the head fresh out of the box here so for me it made sense to do it before putting it on, but I’m thinking as long as your head has solid tension to it, it should work no problem! The cutter is pretty sharp so that mixed with tension should make things easy! I would still recommend laying the bass drum down though so you can push into it a little more if you need to. As you can see in this video I didn’t realize I needed more pressure to go all the way through at first. I’d love to know how it works out for you! If you do it, please let me know! Cheers! 😄🤘🏼

I cut my holes exactly the same.. but i don't think you really need the safety ring. I never used one, and my head never ripped... Cheers!

Good question! I would cut a hole if you have time to. It’ll just sound better to have a mic pointed into the kick through the hole vs not. That being said, the sound guy I’m sure can still make it sound decent without cutting a hole in it if you don’t have the time or resources to do so. Hope that helps and have a great gig! 🤘🏼

Nice! As mentioned in the beginning of this video, I used the 5” center because the “Drum O” that I bought was 5”. So maybe consider picking up one of those or a kick port, and whatever size it is, is what you should go with. If you don’t plan to get either of those two, I’d still probably go with 5” so it has plenty of room for a mic to sit in your bass drum. 🤘🏼

It definitely wasn’t easy. I think I just pushed the head down as much as I could so there was more room for that piece to snap in place. Hope that helps and good luck!

@@ClaxtonDrums I tried doing exactly that and also tried causing thermal expansion by soaking the ring in hot water, but it’s literally impossible and I gave up and just kept only the male ring on there

I’m sorry to hear that didn’t work for you! Maybe it’s defective? You shouldn’t have that hard of a time with it!
