I appreciate what you taught me in this video about cutting cast iron pipe. I bought a Diamond Grit 8-in Grit-TPI Wood/Metal Cutting Reciprocating Saw Blade. I needed to make three cuts in a 14 ft long section of 100-year-old cast iron pipe. I made the first cut, and when I was close to the bottom it just snapped and broke in two. What I discovered was that by taking a sledgehammer to the pipe after cutting it a few inches deep, the pipe just shattered. Done. Much easier than continuing to cut with the blade.

(1) How come you went back with cash iron? When I encounter a situation like this I always replace with PVC. PVC last much longer especially underground and cost much less. It's a superior product all the way around. (2) For the Diy'er you don't need to buy expensive snap cutters or ratchet cutters to cut cast iron. This situation was fairly straightforward since you have the no hub bands, but most of the time when I run into cast iron it's service weight bell and spigot and I have found cutting old corroded pipe with ratchet cutters tends to crush the pipe instead of cutting it cleanly causing the fracture to spread. I have a pair of ratchet cutters on my truck but I hardly use them anymore. When I cut out old cast iron, I use a sawzall and cast iron sawzall blade. Now the blades are pricey at $20/each and you don't get many cuts out of each blade, but it's worth it when cutting out bad pipe. I have found the Milwaukee blades to be the best longest lasting, but surprisingly good and much cheaper are harbor freight diamond grit blades.

In some jurisdictions (NYC) PVC is generally not allowed because in a fire PVC liquifies and the liquid fire starts travelling. Doesn't happen with cast iron.

Why not replace it with pvc that way it doesn’t rot and pvc is cheaper than cast

It looks like that piece had been replaced before, odd that it would split like that. I've never seen new (original) construction done using band clamps, always hubs at connection points. That is why I'm assuming it's been replaced previously. I do have a question, I'm thinking to replace my cast piping but wonder if I could leave the vent stack as cast and PVC for the rest? Concerned about the weight of the cast vent being supported safely and correctly. Single story House.

From a business perspective for new or upcoming plumbers this is a good opportunity to get more business and up sell. If the pipe has corroded like that chances are there are other sections of bad pipe and your customer will continually call you back to cut out pipe and replace with new pipe. What I do is take the opportunity to camera the line and/or recommend a total replacement of the sewer. That would turn a $800 job (that's what this job would go for in my area) to a few thousand dollars. You get more money and the customer has the piece of mind of a long term solution.

yes, they also make coated cast iron that will never corrode and crack. It's more expensive. but well worth a upsell on value.

why did you leave that pipe open? mulch can fall down there. to prevent mulch from falling and to allow that pipe to drain water outside if there is a backup. put a fernco cap on the wye but remove the clamp from the fernco cap. that way if there is pressure it will push the cap off then the water will dump outside.

Thank you - this is probably going to help me replace the drain pipe from our washing machine. It keep backing up because something hard and immovable is in the pipe. I have no camera, but my snake hits it and I have to wiggle it to get it around whatever is in there.

Very nice video, thanks for posting! I bought a house and after trouble shooting the kitchen sink drain not working properly, I discovered that someone (an angry roofer?) had dropped bunches of wood scraps down the vent stack! i managed to skewer several pieces using a method i made by adding a screw to the end of a roof rake pole, but there is lots more that seems wedged in. So i'm considering pullling off the cupboards from the kitchen wall, and cutting some wall out, in order to reach the pipe stack in the wall. I'll have to strap the pipe in place (BUT HOW?) and then cut out a section of the pipe in order to pull out the remaining wood in the stack. Then i could insert a section of PVC with a boot on each end... any tips how i could secure the stack so it doesn't slip out of the roof opening and make more work for me up there?

Yes You will want to hold the pipe above where you are cutting. Then after you cut it you set The upper half Down against the lower part That you just cut it from. Then you go up on the roof and you pull all the iron out. THEN , You go with pvc for the entire length from your cut to the roof.

Hi, your video is very helpful! I have to replace a piece of cast iron sewer pipe under my crawlspace, about 13ft long. What is the reasonable price to hire a plumber to do this? I got a quote for $2700 seems quite expensive to me, do you think this is reasonable price? Thank you!

The scissor cutters are as old as the pipe 🤣 And, here in Chicago you can't only use no hubs, they want it all leaded together with hubs. You can get away with using 1 no hub but they want the one that comes with 4 clamps on it. I'm shocked anywhere allows C.I. to be installed like this with all the bands lol

@@1_fishin_magician153 Thanks for posting a great question. Both Pvc and ABS are great, we use more ABS in Cali, in places like utah its all PVC. if i had a choice it would be PVC. its more sound proof.

Why does everyone say PVC lasts longer? It has only been in use since the 80s. These cast iron pipes have been in houses in Boston 100 yrs and are still operable. PVC has not been around long enough for us to make this claim. They say the shelf life is 400 yrs. How do you test that lol

To be fair, it's well known that plastic takes thousands of years to breakdown. I bet 400 years is conservative. It probably lasts longer.
