Thank you Rudy for all videos you are making, they're so informative, and I would like to mention something you can add to those videos, I know it's hard and time consuming, when you are focusing on something you are explaining, stop the video and add arrow pointing the subject, that I think your explanation will be more clear. I'm a former dog groomer. To find the quick I always shine an LED flashlight underneath and through the nail while I'm clipping. It helps with dark or light colored nails. This was a great video, the best I've ever seen on nail clipping! Happy clipping everyone! ❤️

I have tried and I can't see it..Gianna's grows so close to the tip..I would never be able to cut off as much as he did...and when I think she's being sensitive..a drama queen...because my little toy...doesn't like them clip...( she doesn't have a choice....) and I try to go just a little bit more..and it's more like sliding the scissors..almost strapping...they will be a speck of blood...so she is not just being sensitive...the vein is just so darn close...

My older dog's quicks look like that black circle. I thought that's what it was so I stopped trimming there. Her nails have gotten real long so I'm trimming every once in a while to try to get the quick to recede, if at all possible.

Thank you, Patty! What a trooper. I love his voice in his videos. He's so calm and soothing, which is what relaxes the dogs as well. I've seen people yell because they get frustrated. When I do anything for or to my kids I always try to talk in a calming voice and tell them "It's ok" - "Mommy's got it, it's fine, baby" - "So we have a mess, no biggie, it's fixable" - "You're fine, baby, no big deal" - "We got it, baby, mommy clean it up". I always try to reassure them that they aren't in trouble if it is a legitimate accident on the floor, especially with my older dog. She can't help that her messes happen.

I think it's the dot beneath the one above. When you see the first comparison, the other nails does not have two dots, but one, unlike the one he said not to cut further on. So I think it's the small black dot on the bottom 🤷‍♀️

Hiii! I've come with an update. I did some claw clipping today, and specifically asked the vet I'm training under what I should look for, also mentioning this video. I rewatched the video again, and noticed that he uses his words terribly confusing, and the thing he's talking about is actually suuuper small to even notice. So what I learned was that, the dark/black circle will show the moment you start cutting the nail. It will usually almost be there when you make a cut in the nail. HOWEVER on black nails, there will form like a greyish smaller circle within that claw again. I think that's what he means with eye in the "circle" he's talking about. To make is easy, it's something in a lighter colour (grey) within the darker (black) colour that occurs when you start cutting. The grey, as in the nerve of the nail that you don't want to cut :) Hope this helps!

Shocking thing I found out is that many groomers and even vets didn’t cut my dog’s nails even though they claimed they did. I had to always check and make them do it if I didn’t see them cut. I wondered why this kept happening to my little Yorkie. I found out later it was bc my Yorkie had black nails. It would’ve helped if his groomer or vet told me. I learned I had to do it myself so I got a grinder. Truly cutting my bird’s and my dog’s nails is a anxiety inducing experience for sure. But the black quick in the center is a huge help. Thank you!

As I am the only one that can get it done (the vet has to sedate her), it's sometimes a crazy time. I was really sick and had to get in there to get the job done and oh my goodness it was blood everywhere. I only had cornstarch on hand at the time, I felt Soo guilty. So this video will really help. Tips for cutting dark (or any) nails: 1) Use a flashlight underneath to see the darker area in black nails or the pink/brown area inside lighter nails. This darker area is the “quick” the tip of the vein where the blood is running through. 2) Set the dog on the floor and notice where the nail meets the floor. You can also feel the curvature at the back of the nail. You don’t need to cut any further than that first curve up to where it reaches the floor. **you can also use a grinder on dark nails instead of using the clipper, or to take a little off at a time, adjusting the length by smaller increments. Just be sure they’re familiar with grinder noises and sensations** 3) Just in case you do cut too much, have a blood clotting agent like WoundSeal, hémostatic powder or bleed stopping powder or spray handy when you cut. Just apply it quickly as soon as you see any blood and hold the paw for about 60 seconds. A dog can bleed to death through a nail cut through the quick (same goes for cats) 4) Familiarize your dog with having it’s nails and paws touched. Touch their feet and legs often, hold the paw and pad, squeezing gently to separate and massage between their toes with your fingers. Also familiarize them with clippers (being careful to keep them closed and locked) Let the dog see and smell the clippers even when you’re not using them. Start doing this a few days before you trim their nails. Give rewards when your animals allow you to touch their feet and paws, and whenever they are becoming familiar with clippers. This reinforces a positive association. It will make your job a million times easier. 5) If you have a small, wiggly dog or one that doesn’t tolerate nail clipping, here’s a hack but just be careful about doing iit. It doesn’t replace the tips above, you should still do them. Make a hammock to hang up with your dog inside. Cut holes in a sturdy fabric bag with handles - reusable shopping bags work well. Cut four holes for the legs and one in front for the head - be sure to measure so you don’t cut them too far apart. Hang the bag with the dog inside by the bag handles. This way, they can’t get their head in the way or move around too much. You must also be timely, you don’t ever leave the animal in this long enough for circulation to be cut off (not longer than it would take sitting on the toilet to pee - as that might cut your circulation off). Just remember that the longer you take, the more stress on your dog. You can always rest the dog between front and back paws. Make sure to measure the nails and adjust the angle, placing your flat palm beneath your dog’s foot parallel in line with the floor, as if the paw is resting on the ground. Hope this helps - Cheers! 🐾

I got a hammock to cut my chihuahuas nails was having to take him every three weeks to get them cut because he's frightened and won't stay still. I've just managed to get all his nails done with him in the hammock. All his nails are black, watching this I think I could have took more off. Very helpful thanks

This video is so helpful! I have a fawn pug and he has the blackest nails with long quicks. It’s almost impossible to get his nails short. I can only cut them so far back and they still look too long. I wish he would sit still and behave like sweet Patty. She’s so good.

We also had a fawn pug named Sushi, who was so dear to us..Most pugs in my experience, including Sushi, dont like there nails being clipped, because there viens grow out long, with the nail..You may not be able to clip as short as you want.In this case,it is better to tip the nail, and try to grind them to get them a little shorter..I hope this helped..Thank you so much for watching us..We love Pugs..lol

That was the best video I’ve seen that explains how to find the “danger zone” vein. Thank you so much! Is there a special direction that the clippers should be held, or a special way to grip the nail when trimming? I feel so uncoordinated when handling my dogs for nail trimmings. I’m a licensed cosmetologist even, but handling my fur-babies is a whole different matter. As you can probably imagine, they no longer want me to touch their nails, so I have botched the process. I’m trying to train my dogs through a long process of “touch & treat therapy” with the goal of hopefully getting them back into the routine of having their nails trimmed. But any additional help would be SO appreciated! I noticed that the leash groomers use is held up high. Is there a reason for this? Peace & Blessings, Crone

Thanks for the video. I have 2 older toy poodles. I recently started grooming my dogs as grooming has become beyond expensive for me being a widow. I just bought some clippers at Walmart. Now that im used to clipping them, time to invest in a better pair. I had nail clippers for dogs. My late husband used to cut thief nails between appointments. Thanks again for the videos. Very helpful. At least my puppies are still getting pampered and looking good!!

@@GroomingByRudy it definitely did. I’ve had my puppies since they were 6- weeks old. They are 15 yo. He didn’t even want “little dogs”. My late husband and my poodles were always together. We never left the house without them. Seriously. Thank you again and God bless.

Very helpful; thank you. I find clipping nails to be very stressful, although I am conservative and have never cut the quick (so far). Both of my dogs are squirmy, which doesn't help. When I bathe them, I have the dog standing in about 2" of water. I clip nails after bath time so that their nails are softer. I think it is less stressful for them rather than cutting dry nails.

Interesting video! I prefer grinding. Safer and more precise. My Rotty doesn't mind. I do 2 nails four days a week and 4 nails three days a week so my dog effectively gets his nails ground weekly. I take off just a little bit. This helps the quick recede. Never had an issue.

I have a dog with both black & white/clear nails, I have found that if you turn the paw or nail over to see the under side of the nail,it's easier to see were you should stop at the vain, also I read somewhere that if you cut your dog's nails every 4/6 weeks the vain will become shorter, which I've found is true in my dogs case!

This was so informative. Thku, so much for this video. I'm tired of seeing my pup get nicked at the vet office for nail trimming. I've decided to do it myself but to be informed first. I've purchased a quiet nail grinder & nail trimming hammock. I'm giving Him plenty of treats as he gets used to the nail grinder. I'll do the same with the hammock & then, I'll be ready to try. I pray that I will become an expert bc I'm determined to do it myself so that he'll stop having bad experiences with nail trimming. I've basically paid for him to get nicked. So, no more of that. Might as well learn & do it myself.

I have a Husky and he doesn't like her nails being trimmed, when I take her to the vet she puts 2 mussels and she cries, I have been trimming her nails 2 at a time I take a break and hug, but with your video, I will try giving her treats and see how it goes 😊🇨🇦

it will retreat so don’t worry, but you will have to cut several times until your dog veins reach the perfect length a long with the nails.

You can look up receding the quick but a standard flat cut won’t really do it. You need to clip both the bottom and a portion of the top
