I have tried and I can't see it..Gianna's grows so close to the tip..I would never be able to cut off as much as he did...and when I think she's being sensitive..a drama queen...because my little toy...doesn't like them clip...( she doesn't have a choice....) and I try to go just a little bit more..and it's more like sliding the scissors..almost strapping...they will be a speck of blood...so she is not just being sensitive...the vein is just so darn close...

Thank you, Patty! What a trooper. I love his voice in his videos. He's so calm and soothing, which is what relaxes the dogs as well. I've seen people yell because they get frustrated. When I do anything for or to my kids I always try to talk in a calming voice and tell them "It's ok" - "Mommy's got it, it's fine, baby" - "So we have a mess, no biggie, it's fixable" - "You're fine, baby, no big deal" - "We got it, baby, mommy clean it up". I always try to reassure them that they aren't in trouble if it is a legitimate accident on the floor, especially with my older dog. She can't help that her messes happen.

Shocking thing I found out is that many groomers and even vets didn’t cut my dog’s nails even though they claimed they did. I had to always check and make them do it if I didn’t see them cut. I wondered why this kept happening to my little Yorkie. I found out later it was bc my Yorkie had black nails. It would’ve helped if his groomer or vet told me. I learned I had to do it myself so I got a grinder. Truly cutting my bird’s and my dog’s nails is a anxiety inducing experience for sure. But the black quick in the center is a huge help. Thank you!

Tips for cutting dark (or any) nails: 1) Use a flashlight underneath to see the darker area in black nails or the pink/brown area inside lighter nails. This darker area is the “quick” the tip of the vein where the blood is running through. 2) Set the dog on the floor and notice where the nail meets the floor. You can also feel the curvature at the back of the nail. You don’t need to cut any further than that first curve up to where it reaches the floor. **you can also use a grinder on dark nails instead of using the clipper, or to take a little off at a time, adjusting the length by smaller increments. Just be sure they’re familiar with grinder noises and sensations** 3) Just in case you do cut too much, have a blood clotting agent like WoundSeal, hémostatic powder or bleed stopping powder or spray handy when you cut. Just apply it quickly as soon as you see any blood and hold the paw for about 60 seconds. A dog can bleed to death through a nail cut through the quick (same goes for cats) 4) Familiarize your dog with having it’s nails and paws touched. Touch their feet and legs often, hold the paw and pad, squeezing gently to separate and massage between their toes with your fingers. Also familiarize them with clippers (being careful to keep them closed and locked) Let the dog see and smell the clippers even when you’re not using them. Start doing this a few days before you trim their nails. Give rewards when your animals allow you to touch their feet and paws, and whenever they are becoming familiar with clippers. This reinforces a positive association. It will make your job a million times easier. 5) If you have a small, wiggly dog or one that doesn’t tolerate nail clipping, here’s a hack but just be careful about doing iit. It doesn’t replace the tips above, you should still do them. Make a hammock to hang up with your dog inside. Cut holes in a sturdy fabric bag with handles - reusable shopping bags work well. Cut four holes for the legs and one in front for the head - be sure to measure so you don’t cut them too far apart. Hang the bag with the dog inside by the bag handles. This way, they can’t get their head in the way or move around too much. You must also be timely, you don’t ever leave the animal in this long enough for circulation to be cut off (not longer than it would take sitting on the toilet to pee - as that might cut your circulation off). Just remember that the longer you take, the more stress on your dog. You can always rest the dog between front and back paws. Make sure to measure the nails and adjust the angle, placing your flat palm beneath your dog’s foot parallel in line with the floor, as if the paw is resting on the ground. Hope this helps - Cheers! 🐾

Very helpful; thank you. I find clipping nails to be very stressful, although I am conservative and have never cut the quick (so far). Both of my dogs are squirmy, which doesn't help. When I bathe them, I have the dog standing in about 2" of water. I clip nails after bath time so that their nails are softer. I think it is less stressful for them rather than cutting dry nails.

2:38 if you pause here you can see the quick on the left and the nail that still needs to be trimmed back a bit more on the right. The dark horizontal “eye” on the left is the quick.

That was the best video I’ve seen that explains how to find the “danger zone” vein. Thank you so much! Is there a special direction that the clippers should be held, or a special way to grip the nail when trimming? I feel so uncoordinated when handling my dogs for nail trimmings. I’m a licensed cosmetologist even, but handling my fur-babies is a whole different matter. As you can probably imagine, they no longer want me to touch their nails, so I have botched the process. I’m trying to train my dogs through a long process of “touch & treat therapy” with the goal of hopefully getting them back into the routine of having their nails trimmed. But any additional help would be SO appreciated! I noticed that the leash groomers use is held up high. Is there a reason for this? Peace & Blessings, Crone

I have 2 dogs. One with clear nails, one with black. I have read that the quick is pink and then others say black????? I just need to know where to clip and where to stop. This explained it pretty thoroughly. Thank you. Kudos to Patty that adorable sweet girl!

This was so informative. Thku, so much for this video. I'm tired of seeing my pup get nicked at the vet office for nail trimming. I've decided to do it myself but to be informed first. I've purchased a quiet nail grinder & nail trimming hammock. I'm giving Him plenty of treats as he gets used to the nail grinder. I'll do the same with the hammock & then, I'll be ready to try. I pray that I will become an expert bc I'm determined to do it myself so that he'll stop having bad experiences with nail trimming. I've basically paid for him to get nicked. So, no more of that. Might as well learn & do it myself.

I have a rescue dog and he isn’t used to baths or his nails being clipped. He trusts me though so I’m trying to learn everything I can about cutting his black nails. Thank you for the video!! ❤❤

I have a dog with both black & white/clear nails, I have found that if you turn the paw or nail over to see the under side of the nail,it's easier to see were you should stop at the vain, also I read somewhere that if you cut your dog's nails every 4/6 weeks the vain will become shorter, which I've found is true in my dogs case!
