Literally the BEST video about trimming dog's nails on the internet!
@Sly_Wolf_1
@Sly_Wolf_1 2 ай бұрын
I've been doing this for around 20yrs. You have a short coated dog, so for those who have dogs with long coats, and or fluffy feet here a quick tip. Take a pair of tights, pop socks, stockings or even a sock. Slide it over the dogs paw, make a little hole and push the nail through the hole. This will hold back any fur and prevent it from being ripped out in a giant clump if it gets caught and wrapped round the dremel bit. The material will jam up the dremel and stop it, whereas the fur offers no resistance and is painfully torn out.

@DougHinVA black nailed dogs make it much, much harder to see the "quick" to prevent hurting the pup by grinding down on a nerve or blood vessel. White nailed dogs are pretty easy to see if you use a back light. They're not saying anything mean, it's just the facts, and this video was very helpful for dog parents looking to trim nails at home safely. Calm down.

I just got a nail grinder today and wanted a good instructional video. Thank you for this. It’s going to take time to be able to get my dog comfortable. I can’t clip his nails, he just won’t let me. He’s a German shepherd and while his nails do naturally file down from activity, they have slowly gotten too long and he’s broken a few during robust play (luckily no serious nail injuries). But still, I need to do better.

Of all the videos yours is the VERY! best. My friend had a min pin that hated it when his nails were being clipped. He would begin to yelp the moment the clippers were brought out. I grew up on a ranch and to calm one of my horses to have the Vet work on her, we'd put a towel over her eyes. I told my friend to cradle her dog on his back like you did and pulled a tube sock with toe end cut off, over his eyes. And from then on, she had no problems doing his nails. I introduced my friend to the Dremel method and now she is able to do all 3 of her small dogs nails fast and without hitting the quick line on those dogs with black nails.

I purchased Dremel Pet Grooming Kit from Home Depot for 29.99 It arrived today, my dogs were a bit nervous, Belgian Malinois, but with some treats+soothing voice, this was easy :). My dogs are 2 years old, never had their nails cut, less than an inch long. It took me 10 minutes to do both dogs, first time cutting their nails on first day it was received. This thing is a lifesaver, and I will never ever use Clippers again. This video helped me get rid of the jitters, because man i was so nervous myself doing this to my dogs! I did not want this to be painful for them and IT IS NOT!. Very good tool. I highly recommend.

An absolutely amazing video. Thanks so much. I just adopted 2 retired racing greyhounds, and their nails were in need of trimming. Finally I got the dremel, and started with just brief sessions. Weekly I've been extending the amount of time I spend using it. They are adapting to it very well. They are also black dogs with black nails so this video was a godsend for that reason. Thanks again.

Thank you for the advice! I've been using a cheap $20 dog nail grinder for the last year but just made the investment in an actual Dremel Lite. Very excited to have something that won't skip constantly after a few minutes. I never thought to grind the top of the nail, it might even make them less sharp as they grow back.

As others have said, and I agree 100%, you have surpassed all the other videos on how to use a Dremel to groom dog nails (especially black nails). I have a 100-pound Anatolian shepherd mix with thick, quick growing black nails. He tolerates nail grooming sessions pretty well (doesn't love it, of course, but he puts up with it). I have used both clippers and dremel with him, and he seems to prefer the dremel. I'm going to try transitioning him to the "on his back between my legs" position like your dog. That position appears to provide added comfort, control, and safety for both the groomer and the dog. I have a couple of questions that I thought might have been discussed in comments under the video but haven't seen mentioned yet. What grit sandpaper drum are you using, and what speed on the dremel?
@VonHohenhallaDobermans
@VonHohenhallaDobermans Жыл бұрын
thank you so so much for the kind words! Grit doesn't really matter too much, a finer grit will mean it takes a little longer but you have more control, so I just use whatever I have available and whatever is cheap in bulk from Amazon dn adjust accordingly. speed is usually 6-8, basically fast enough so it doesn't skip at all, but not so fast its hard to control

Thanks for your video! Really good shots. Always good to see what's needed. Now, what do you do if your dog won't let you touch her paws with clippers or drimmel? I'm gonna just touch one toe today. Two tomorrow. And so on. And then or maybe concurrently, adding the drimmel by touching it running to her paws with treats after each touch! Hope it works. I guess, all I've got is time. It would be so much easier if my pooch could understand English (or Spanish or German!).

This dog reminds me of mine. So nervous. She hates getting her nails trimmed even though I’ve never hit her quick. When I picked her up at 9 weeks of age, the breeder obviously had just clipped her nails cause one of them was bloody. They obviously don’t forget and it’s been a nerve wracking experience and a struggle for all I involved ever since.

Good tips, thanks for this video. I have been using for years now, a Dremel like, battery powered tool, that has a plastic guard that goes around the sanding wheel allowing you to insert 1 nail to grind and then this guard would protect the other nails and paw from coming in contact with the sanding wheel. But I have found it easier to file/trim the nails with this guard removed. I found this tool at a PetCo (or PetSmart) around 20 yrs ago, so do not know if they still sell this tool for filling a dogs nails.

Great video! Clear instructions, thanks for the closeups! Although I dremel my dog's black nails, I wasn't sure how to take it back to where I wanted it to end up without quicking him. Interestingly, he and his mother both have nails that grow faster than they can wear down, but hers are white, so easy to work with. My other ( all very active) dogs' nails all stay short with natural wear.

Thank you for this video! Impressed by how calm your dog is during the dremel process. I didn't get my mini Schnoodle girls used to having their paws handled, and they are a ball of nerves when their nails are clipped. I just bought a dremel, and used it for the first time. A better experience than using the clipper, but we have a ways to go before they're anything like calm! I intend to use CBD for the next several weekly sessions, along with treats after each nail...we'll see how that works! Thanks again!

In the end it will be nicer for me to do it than the groomer.

you should leave the quick as exposed as possible, since when it hits the ground it will recede. usually between 6-8 depending on the dog, but you'll get a feel for what youre most comfortable with. If its skipping when you're grinding you have it way too slow

I've have yet to find a video that someone has horses and hasn't used the Dremel method on a horses hooves. I had a horse that had a hoof injury and the vet was called to tend to it, he trimmed it back, medicated it and said to keep it dry with this barrier boot. Said he'd come back in 8 wks to trim, medicate, and make sure no infection set in. But I'd been feeding a recommended feed that a friend had in her feed/suppy store. It was formulated by a Vet that worked on racehorses that had hoof injuries. It had bio-tin that promoted fast hoof growth. Well the normal hoof growth the vet thought would be 6-8 wks was shorted like 2 wks the hoof growth on my horses injured foot was so fast the barrier boot wouldn't stay on. So my neighbor brought over his metal grinder with heavy duty sanding pads and took off the over grown toe of the injured foot to get the barrier boot back on, 8 weeks later the Vet was shocked at the fast the hoof had healed and grown in 2 week intervals and even more amazed at not having farrier nippers and file to trim it to using the sander pads on a grinder tool.

Great video. I’ve been trying to figure out how to recede the qwik. So it’s more full exposure, as in, all around the nail, versus just shaving the tip down? My dog has white nails, which is helpful, but after your video, I need to work on my technique with the rounding motion. I try, but she wiggles her paws. I’ve been doing a few everyday. She tolerates WAY better than the nail clippers. Additional question: nails should not be clacking on hardwood floors right? I thought I read that, thats a good indicator of the length and if you do hear them when they’re walking around, thats an indication they’re too long. I’m trying to recede the qwik so I’m not hearing her clicking and clacking around the apartment.
@VonHohenhallaDobermans
@VonHohenhallaDobermans 2 жыл бұрын
yeah i grind all the way around, that way it takes more time for it to grow back. correct if you can hear the nails that means theyre too long, ideally theyre small little nubs, but you have to be really dedicated to get there but one you do its a breeze to maintain

My problem is I rescued an abused lab/pit mix with a lot of fear. She was tied up and thrown out of a moving vehicle. She had to chew off the ropes from her legs and they are all scared. Therefore, she will not let me touch her paws. What kind of relaxation medicine or something that I can use to trim her nails. The kennel I take her to said it took 4 people to hold her down and they only got one nail and the cut it too short and it bled...so she will not let you near her paws. They are very overgrown and walking her on cement or on the road has not helped. Do I need to take her to the vet and put her out to have it done?
@VonHohenhallaDobermans

I would try a really good muzzle and then a cage muzzle on top of that, and then try it they way im showing here. if you came to me for boarding that's what I would do to get them done. the problem is that she's only had negative experiences with it, especially with it getting cut too short. She needs to start having neutral experiences where here paws are handled and nails dremeled without it hurting, then eventually it will get easier and easier. I would do a vet as a last resort but there are some pups who just have to go to the vet to get it done. good luck!

I’ve only ever used clippers on our dog. She absolutely hates it and I can only get a couple done before she completely freaks out. It takes me a few days to do her nails. I watched your video and the dremel tool looks faster and less chance of damaging the quick. I have a dremel tool in my workshop but it looks like there are ones made for nail trimming . Is there a difference or can I use my work shop dremel
@VonHohenhallaDobermans
@VonHohenhallaDobermans Жыл бұрын
I would use your work shop Dremel. the dogs ones don't have a lot of power, and break/gunk up pretty easily.
@joeszymanski6936
@joeszymanski6936 Жыл бұрын
@@VonHohenhallaDobermans it is quite loud. I’ve seen videos of ones that are designed specifically for dogs nails that are quieter and run slower so they won’t heat the nail up as much
@VonHohenhallaDobermans
@VonHohenhallaDobermans Жыл бұрын
@@joeszymanski6936 on average I spend 10-15 seconds per nail, sometimes less so the heat factor doesn't really come into play imo but you should get what works for you!

@@VonHohenhallaDobermans I was hoping someone would ask this question. I bought a dog nail trimmer, which is not too powerful enough. It's taking a while to finish one nail. I will try using an actual workshop Dremel like you use. Great video!

Why are you doing the top of the nail??
@VonHohenhallaDobermans
@VonHohenhallaDobermans 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Alex! Couple reasons: 1. If you’re doing it as a service for a customer it shows more easily that you worked on that nail 2. The more you take off all areas, that’s an area that will have to grow back, meaning it will last longer

Usually at 7-8 but really depends on how comfortable you are and how new the sandpaper is. General rule is make the speed so it doesn’t skip when using it
