good video! I am a cabinet installer and many jobs require glass to be cut for upper cabinet doors. I have always ordered from glass company's or a hardware store if its just a few pieces (they freak out of you want more than like 5 pieces cut, as if it is some huge order) the issue with that more than the cost is time, I usually do not know the sizes until I am on the job and have the cabinets in hand, so it means a special trip back to do the glass when the glass co finally has it ready. so TODAY I decided to cut my own...only four small pieces but I had a decent amount of glass to work with. the first few trys at scoring were horrific, could not get the wheel to cut consistently or stay straight , then magically it started working better. so what he says about the cutter needing to break in a bit is true. I bet oil would have helped as well, I will do that next time for sure. biggest thing I figured out today was being "confident" with your scoring and breaking is the key. just roll it along with a good amount of pressure, keep it as straight as you can but just one pass, pay extra attention to the start point and end point, get a good score, then when you break it just do it, do not be shy . a nice swift action is the way to go , only times it broke wrong was when I was being too careful. if i needed to break a narrow section off I used a small metal bullet level and just smacked it. once I got over being afraid of it braking wrong it stopped braking wrong.

Your words could be applied to so much in life: read a bit, but some extra stock for early failures, and then try it till you get it. What happens? You find out that you only needed a few of your extras; it wasn’t nearly as hard to do as you thought; suddenly you see opportunities with your new skill everywhere to make stuff better, cheaper, or faster. I love your story. Tell it to every young person you can.

When you actually break the glass, do not press in the middle of the pane. Press on one edge of the score and let the break "run" to the other side. You may get away with pressing in the middle when cutting thin glass, but it surely will fail with ticker than 6 mm.

Bro the glass my be toughened? and if so you can't snap it. You can only cut glass once before it gets toughened. It's like a safety feature makes the glass stronger. It will blow up if you keep try to snap it. It will blow up like a car window does. Trust me I cut glass for a living.
@timisaak6904 жыл бұрын

Question. I work at a big box store and cut glass quite often, mirrors not as much. You are probably aware of the device we use to measure, hold & cut. We never use cutting oil and never back cut mirror. We just score & break. Why would we not need to cut the backing on a mirror or use cutting oil?

This is the hardest thing that I have ever tried to do and the frustration is about to send me to tears. 😡😩 my glass is breaking uneven.
@WillyWillis19655 жыл бұрын
LOL.....the tiny glass shards are the result of not lubricating the cut prior to the cut....the cut "freezes" if the cut is "hot" (no coolant)...I know, a contradiction in terms. Never push away while cutting. No need cut the mirror backing before you cut it on its face, and finally, you are holding the cutter upside down......
@kiraneko55824 жыл бұрын
Hello sir, iwanna know if there is other way to lubricating it if i dont have glass cutting oil?

Correct, cutter is upside down, break glass straight after cutting, oil or turps.

Been cutting glass for 45 years. Don't cut the back of the mirror, just wasting time. Apply the same amount of pressure to thin or thick glass.
@ingDemurtas5 жыл бұрын
why do you push in the middle instead of starting the break from one end of the cut line?
@stolenhal04 жыл бұрын
Because glass will break wherever tension is placed. If you attempt to crack from the edge rather than the center it increases the chances of your score breaking crooked. If you crack from the center the distance from each side less decreasing your chances of an improper fracture. This is especially true as the size of your glass increases.

That is not a diamond wheel.. "A glass cutter may use a diamond to create the split, but more commonly a small cutting wheel made of hardened steel or tungsten carbide 4-6 mm in diameter with a V-shaped profile called a "hone angle" is used. "
@sreval5 жыл бұрын
That is not a diamond wheel !... it is either a steel or tungsten steel wheel...they do not make 'diamond glass cutting wheels' ....but they do make 'diamond glass cutters' . Which as the name implies is a diamond that will cut glass ! Cutting mirror is exactly the same as cutting glass.....but you should only cut mirror on the reflective surface ! You do not need to scratch through the protective backing paint. When cutting glass you would cut along a straight edge, pulling the glass cutter from the top down towards yourself, you can apply an even pressure this way. pushing a cutter will make things harder to do. I am very surprised to see WWJ giving out vague info.
