Hello, today I'm going show you how to cut the petals or scales off of a pine cone. You will need a pair of garden Shears like these. I am going to put a link to these below in the description. I spent about 5 bucks on these and with them I have cut many pine cones. What you want to do to get started is you want to work your way from the top skinny part to the fat bottom part. So you just flip it over and kind of start hacking jobbing your way in cutting the first small petals. Try to cut close to the core of the pine cone and take a few extra cuts to kind of shave it down as close as you can to the core. Soon you will start to be able to get nice clean cuts. I like to take the hook of the Shears up to the top and have it go up back behind it there just to get a clean cut. Keep it nice and shaved up spinning it around. I tried doing this at first with just a pair of scissors and it did not work so well, I even had a some pretty heavy duty scissors but the problem is the were just too big. This little hook gets in their and you get to those tight places. It takes a few minutes to do one pine cone and then you just have to pick up all your pieces. I Pick up all the big nice pieces first and put them in one jar. Then I pick up all the smaller pieces and put them in another jar. Well that’s it! so why cut them? what do you do with the skinny part left or the petals you managed to cut off? It seems pointless what you did! At least nothing said about the purpose to do what you did.

you can use the scales for making 'shingles' for the roofs of models. I use them on hand made bird feeders. some people use them as shingles on doll-house roofs. some people make flowers with them.

If your using the whole pine cone in a craft do you bake them first to kill any bugs? Or bake them separately or at all? Thank you
