How To Deal With Health Anxiety and Hypochondria

This video is long, but it’s packed full of information. Here is a breakdown. I answer the following questions:
What does hypochondria/health anxiety look like?
What’s the difference between hypochondria and generalized anxiety disorder?
How do you get hypochondria?
Why don’t pills work for hypochondria?
What does CBT for hypochondria-health anxiety look like?
What is a self-help version of CBT for hypochondria?
With hypochondriasis, you misinterpret body sensations and assume you have a serious disease, even after you’ve been told you don’t. You may believe that the doctor missed something. You may even believe the anxiety you have will turn into something more serious like dying in your sleep or having a heart attack.
In 2013, the new edition of the diagnostic and statistical manual 5th edition changed the name from hypochondriasis to somatic symptom disorder. Somatic means body. Therefore, it’s a disorder of being over focused on body symptoms and having an illness. People who have this problem, know they have it because they are in a lot of distress.
Self-talk script to use when you are triggered by a body sensation.
I have been checked out by my doctor, my new body symptoms does not mean I really have a medical illness. I have anxiety and this is what I tend to think,. Anxiety makes me believe I have something I don’t. I am not more of a medical expert than the people who have seen and examined lots of sick people. I don’t know what sick people look like, I only know what I look like. I don’t have a point of comparison to know what the illness I’m concerned about really looks like. The internet will not give me a complete picture of what it really looks like to have [fill in the blank with the illness you’re worried about.

Anyone feels like you tell your body “No,stop, I know this is anxiety, we felt it in the past, nothing is going to happen” and your body is like. “I know that, but what if, like, what if THIS is the actual, real health problem, and not anxiety anymore”

Well, I had this happen. I ignored my symptoms as my doctor said that they were only anxiety for 2 years. And even now I have problems of gaslighting myself to believe that symptoms are only anxiety. Unfortunately they are not. And because of past anxiety/hypochondriac label I am not heard by the doctor. Yet. So perhaps, write down your symptoms and then forget all about it! Come back to it a month later and see if you still have it and if it is affecting your life in any way. And keep doing this to all of your symptoms. If nothing else, you have then been tracking your symptoms for some time and have better picture if they are something to be concerned about. And it is kind of similar thing than writing a shopping list etc. When you write it down, you won't forget it and do not need to keep thinking about it constantly. And real symptoms...you are hard pressed to ignore them anyway. Those symptoms make themselves known!

Yes. I hate that I can’t seem to trust my instincts sometimes. I have been telling myself that unless I’m actively dying, that whatever it is will either get better (problem solved) or worse, at which point I will allow myself to get it checked out. So far, everything has gotten better. And somehow that works in my mind because I have made a decision, so I don’t worry as much because I know I’m not going to act right then.

Yeah, don't do it! I've been there googling all the time, frantically, like a maniac. It gives you no answers and induces even more anxiety, it's a vicious cycle that's so hard to break away from. Everyone is different, every disease has multiple symptoms in multiple people, chances are close to zero you'll self-diagnose over the internet. Go see your doctor if in doubt, and remember be honest and don't be shy asking questions.

@@kevinabuuh4570 I'm a barber and the HIV thing that you mention does happen but is really rare! So we normally do everything to keep that from cutting and sometimes will stop the service if anything like that is even possible like if we see a cut or we gave ourselves cuts. Normally what we would do if we see that is stop and immediately take care of the bleeding so that we don't swap blood or anything else like that. Don't worry at all about that cause most barbers I know take that seriously and will do whatever it takes to keep the both of us safe. Not saying its impossible to happen because obviously it does and thats why they teach us this but most barbers and cosmetologist will take these measures to help and keep both the client and themselves safe! Hope this has helped that fear, its really rare that it happens I promise!

Vega Vein I’m only 19 and my dad told me my family has a history of prostate cancer. That same day I got worried about it looked up symptoms and my body started performing the very same symptoms like struggling to pee or peeing in bursts. I’ve never had symptoms that are frequent enough to call it a problem but my mind likes to think up all the times I’ve gotten up to pee at night and all the times I have had trouble getting it out. This is what happens when you want to be healthy as much as you can. You start making things up, the mind is very powerful and we all need to understand that the doctors spend years studying this stuff. You do not know more than your doctor and the symptoms are not serious at all. Especially when you are young eat healthy and work out.

That's why daily habits and distractions are imperative for handling anxiety. Being productive and living your life as normal will give you reassurance that the condition and symptoms still aren't incapacitating you from tackling goals. Start with one step at a time, until your daily schedule is a bit too full for you to worry about your health 24/7. Anxiety symptoms will always be there, but just knowing that you still have power over them is extremely empowering when it comes to dealing with them.

I have severe anxiety, I’m 22, every time I feel like something’s wrong I go down a rabbit hole of google searches. So far I have convinced myself I have a Brain tumor, MS, ALS, and many others. It’s so nice to see I’m not the only one who deals with this, hope everyone who suffers with this can figure things out, I’m still working on it. Dr. Tracer thank you so much for this video, you have brought some relative to peace to my mind.

@@sworthyboy same here. I had MRI of the brain and came back clear so I thought maybe I have lesions in the spinal cord. But I know that this causes different symptoms, it’s usually in progressive MS and older people. Brain MRI should have reassured me but here I am. It’s ridiculous.

@@sworthyboyI got really sick the second time I got Covid and later got post Covid. I started feeling tingling and numbness in my right leg and arm. I did think much of it but decided to go see a doctor. The doctor who wasn’t the smoothest so to speak told me cold turkey it could be symptoms of MS. My whole world came crashing down. I had an MRI on both brain and spine with that contrast liquid. I had to wait 3 months for my results due to the high pressure on the healthcare system during the pandemic. I was a complete mess during those months with constant stress and anxiety. I was constantly monitoring my body. Every tingle, numbness, spasms or twitching was confirmation to me that I had MS. The results came and I was fine. They could not see a single thing wrong with me. They even told me that my brain looked better than it should due to my age (I was 35 at the time). They usually see some age related changes on the gray matter but I had very little. This was almost two years ago and even though I have papers telling me I’m completely fine I still monitor my body constantly actively trying to find something wrong. Those three anxiety filled months waiting for what I thought was basically a death sentence reprogrammed my brain and I can’t correct it.

Now every time my body does anything I'm convinced that I'm either having a heart attack, have a blood clot, or am suffocating. Despite the fact that I'm a 22y who isn't overweight, exercises daily, eats healthy, barely drinks and doesn't smoke. On top of that, multiple doctor have told me I'm fine. Google is a horrible place to look for symptoms. Ur brain loves to come up with symptoms that u don’t even have. I am only 25 and I don't want to live the rest of my life like this. It is so exhausting and it has caused me to develop depression. I feel that I am surviving every day and not truly enjoying life. This video made me cry, I've already been diagnosed with health anxiety, I did some group CBT and am currently awaiting 1-2-1 CBT sessions. There was so much covered here that wasn't covered in the group CBT, and I felt so validated. I spend so much of my time living in fear for my life when before I just took each day as it came without worry. I didn't expect something like this to happen in my mid thirties, especially as I've not had a history of mental illness or any trauma. Watching this video honestly felt really validating, it can be extremely difficult sometimes to dismiss symptoms or body changes, so to know that anxiety can cause so many issues too really helped a lot.

I’m 19 and through the months of August-December I’ve diagnosed myself with a brain tumor, 7 heart attacks, collapsed lungs, and every form of nerve damage. I’m perfectly fine but there is always a voice in the back of my head telling me I’m not. It’s extremely difficult to live with. Luckily, my manager at work is the easiest person to talk to and I’ve been able to actually open up to her about it and she’s talked me through it a lot and is always there and listening. Honestly if it wasn’t for her I’d probably be mentally insane right now with how bad my anxiety was getting.

Dr Tracey...that was the most concise and best explanation I have probably had in a lifetime of anxiety and obsessive thought issues having had hypnosis, CBT and eventual medication. I outwardly control these issues and function but four recent bereavements to my best friend, cousin and parents all relatively young from mid forties to mid sixties, have brought my "demons" out, all coinciding with starting a new job. I have many positives in my life and while I did have a period of great depression, I have seeked help with that and working through that. The difference there is I know it will eventually pass. What is much more stubborn is my anxiety which I have various forms of but the crippling one, is the health one that has increased with age, sense of mortality and I have to admit, access to the internet as you say. My fear of not having a full life is hampering my ability to actually have one. Your video has really resonated with me and has planted thoughts that I am really going to try to hold on to. I am too long a sufferer to think anything is a single fix but I know new tools in arming myself against this form of anxiety, will help in my battle. Thank you ...

Does anyone get a new “problem” and then days or weeks after, see signs (videos, newspaper clippings, commercials, etc.) about the perceived problem and get even more convinced you have it because these are signs solidifying it or are warning you? Or even get vivid/realistic dreams that you have an illness and then you’re convinced when you wake up that your dream was trying to warn you?...OCD/hypochondriac diagnosis here.
