What struck me was to not run away from the feelings, but to lean into them. Brilliant and will be my new mantra. At the age of 76 it proves we are never too old to learn new life coping skills.

I have researched and found out that shrooms are very helpful , it has really helps to reduce anxiety and depression . I would love to try magic mushrooms but I can't easily get some , Is there any realiable source I can purchase one

The Trips I've been having have really helped me a lot , I finally feel in control of my emotions and my future and things that used to be mundane to me now seem incredible and full of nuance on top of that I'm way less driven by my ego and I have alot more empathy as well.

I just want to say that this video is a literal answered prayer. I have been having A LOT of panic attacks the past few weeks, and I know that God is telling me that it's time to face the anxiety I struggle with instead of try to run away from it and numb it out, like I have been doing my whole life. And there was a day where I had yet another panic attack and I had some quiet time with God, and I asked Him, how do I actually work through the feelings in a panic attack and truly process these emotions? Literally this video came up on my KZbin feed like an hour after that! I printed out the helpful checklist and on the bottom, I wrote Philippians 4:13 "I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength." So I thank God and I thank you for making this KZbin channel! I have utilized a lot of your videos before, but as I get more intentional in my walk with God and my mental health journey, I will definitely be utilizing more of your videos! God bless you! ❤✝😌

Over the past year, I have developed very bad health anxiety, specifically my heart. Everytime I get a weird feeling in my body, my anxiety goes to 10 and my mind immediately goes to heart attack or stroke. My chest gets tight and painful, my arms/hands get tingly/numb and my heart races. I can't even take meds anymore because I'm too scared it will cause side effects and make things worse. It's debilitating and I can't enjoy life anymore. Your videos have been helping me a lot so thank you for all that you do.

What you’re describing is when your anxiety is creating chronic / acute hyperventilation. I suffered from this in the past, ended up at the hospital thinking that I was getting a heart attack. I changed: being open about my feelings Had hard conversations with my wife. Went deep to find the basis of my fears. Picked up sports again. Stopped caffeine intake, reduced alcohol drinking and over time just accepted or stopped a lot of things that made me anxious. Like procrastination. My work, wife and friends all respected my feelings and I learned that I can share them and trust others to not run away from them. To be less hard on myself and others. And really focused on the basics. Eat, sleep, be active invest in a social network. A therapist helped. But changing the basis is difficult because I have traumas and a sport injury. That is something I have to accept and has rooted in my nervous system. I haven’t been able to move to that everything will be alright mindset. I’m now here because we recently decided to move house and the uncertainty related to this is killing my sleep again.

I suffer from the exact same. I started experiencing dizziness and it might be related to health problems (altough the cardiilogist said its probably nothing and just due to my weight loss journey), but nonetheless I still have exams and the waiting is just killing me... Health Anxiety is so so terrible 😞. I want to tell you that I was extremely afraid of taking medication for anxiety because of the small probability of the meds triggering dizziness, but I want to reassure you that medication exists to help people like us! Keep up the good fight

I am in the same situation as you. Just now i felt my heartbeat beating fast and thought this was a heart attack or something. I went to a doctor and asked for a scan. Did a scan and everything was normal. Just my heartbeat is going fast. The doctor said it is anxiety and as soon as i heard that my heart is normal and is just my anxiety, i calm down a bit. He didn't give me any medication and just said to try and relax and control my anxiety. I'm trying and I'm calm now. Go for a check up and get clarity. Sometimes clarification can help with anxiety because you can figure out how to heal yourself. Not by overthinking the ifs and buts.

When experiencing any kind of anxiety or fear, do the opposite of what your initial penchant is. Instead of turning away from it, turn toward it. Explore it and know that it is impermanent. It doesn't define you as a human being. It is merely a sensation and experience that you're having in this present moment.

Hello Heather. I'm not a therapist but my advice would be to prioritize your goals and do your best to commit to them, one at a time. I've tried doing that for myself. Applying myself to whatever goals I have while accepting any anxiety that I experience and working through it.

@@heathersterling_ better exploring this would be to me, to ask, "why am i feeling this? Why does being indecisive make me feel this way?" Then, u can get to the bottom of what causes this when u can't make a decision. U can also try to make a list of the choices, and put a few important details on each to help u finally decide, if that's all that needs to be done to get rid of this anxiety. Think of pro's & cons of each & which cons will be worse, or pros better. That's what i would do, if i were u, & following his advice.

@@heathersterling_ start building momentum in extremely small ways. start with things that are beneficial that you generally enjoy. example: create a new habit of doing art, reading, writing, dancing.. every single day you're locked into it. pick whatever you actually enjoy in life. this creates momentum which is critical. every week stack on a new habit and slowly lock in a more rigid protocol adding more difficult and beneficial habits as you go. be sure to include lots of self-care and be kind to yourself (up until recently I was unaware self-care is a thing 😆)

Psilocybin saved my life. I was addicted to heroin for 15 years and after Psilocybin treatment I will be 3 years clean in September. I have zero cravings. This is something that truly needs to be more broadly used in addiction treatment.

Psychedelics saved me from years of uncontrollable depression, anxiety and illicit pill addiction. imagine carrving heavy chains for over a decade and then all of a sudden that burden is gone. Believe it or not in a couple years they'll be all over for treatment of mental health related issues.

Lsd gave me panic attacks all day for months and unlocked a higher level of anxiety in me. I also know people who have/tried to kill themselves on psychedelics. Im glad it helped you but please dont tell people its a silver bullet.

@@PraveenSrJ01 that is so very interesting considering your Indian and I would assume very socialized from a young age. Ask in the name of Jesus Christ to wake up when you are having night mares. Repeat until you wake up, over time bad dreams will get shorter and shorter until you don’t have the bad dreams anymore.

Long term 'anxious type'- and 'familial' ['runs in my family']. Have read a lot of simple 'SH' guides over many years - like a lifetime (50/73 yrs !). I have to agree on your KEY being the acknowledgement of the REALITY of the nuisance of anxiety. Opening up to the 'the physical of it' (the experience) and 'the thinking of 'It' (standing back and noting the thoughts about 'It'). A restatement; an 'exam' in of the anxiety forms. Thank you Emma McAdam. I watch your insightful presentations on/off (time to time) and I think your 'de-mystification' and 'making real'' the experience of 'fear forms' is for me positively reinforcing. I really noticed and valued your 'Resurrection of Freud' and his aphorism "Anxieties buried alive, never die" ! Just one other wisdom statement is [perhaps ?] 'No-one ever DIED from anxiety or the anxiety experience'' (because The Anxious tend to a CAUTIOUS, SAFER [duller?] way of life ?) But anxiety as a body-feeling CAN BE B___Y TERRIFYING and make the Anxious often FEEL very uncomfortable, as in 'very pained'. For me, the 'fight goes on' (no option, the alternative is WORSE !) 😊

*A TIP* : Carve out time to treat yourself well and be kind to yourself. It's hard to focus on your own feelings if you're busy worrying about how other people are treating you. If something is bothering you, talk about it with your partner. That way, both of you can do what you need to do for yourselves and the relationship.

Thanks for helping people, helping me. I was anxious all my life. 40 years ago, when I was an adolescent no one ever talked about these type if feelings. We didn't know how to name it and how to deal with it. As you teach there are many ways to leave with it or overcome. This can change the life of people and avoid them taking loads of medication with several side effects. thanks

When I'm feeling extremely anxiety because of intrusive thoughts and I need to calm my body and mind, I say to myself, "I'm aware that I am having an intrusive thought. I'm also aware that I am laying in bed. I'm also aware of the sound of the fan in the background. I'm aware of the feeling of the blanket against my skin. I'm aware of stomach moving up and down with each breath." And I just keep going until I feel calm and forget what I was even thinking about. For me what it does is it allows me to give the same amount of weight to all these other things happening as I do to the intrusive thought. I don't want to bring it into focus and fixate on it because it just sends me down a spiral. It's the only grounding exercise I've tried so far that works for me.

Love ❤️ the example of stuffing anxiety rocks in your backpack. Then looking at the rock 🪨 and saying, I don’t need that (processing). Who wants unneeded items in your life’s backpack. As a hiker and backpacker, it’s the perfect example for me. Cut the unneeded weight. Thank you.

Sometimes when I see my friends being able to achieve their goals on life, I feel insecure and the urge to do something as great as they did. It makes me feel anxious and motivated, but at the end of the day when I achieve that goal it doesn't feel fulfilling. You just go back to that feel of trouble and anxiety. Even now I am still looking ways on how to make my day more meaning full and make it fulfilling. This help me even the first 5 minute where very helpful. I hope to other people out their you'll do great just the way you are, it not easy fighting with depression and and anxiety so you deserve a pat in the back. I am rooting for you.

Dealing with health anxiety is a real struggle . I have headaches . Back ,neck leg and arm tension which is very uncomfortable and painful . Fatigue is one of the most concerning . I fall for these symptoms all the time even though I have had CBT therapy , changed my diet to increase protein and magnesium . I have days like today that something is terribly wrong . There is no time line for this recovery . I hope to get there one day.

could you do a video about how anxiety affects a person physically due to overthinking or just anxiety in general? and how to stop the physical symptoms if that’s possible but symptoms like nausea, vomiting, headaches, dizziness, stomachaches, drowsiness, shortness of breath, fast heart beat, muscle aches, sharp heart pain, and always getting sick with common colds? i’ve read people with anxiety can possibly have weak immune systems since the body doesn’t function as well when it’s in the fight or flight response all the time or just for a long time if not that’s fine. anyways thank you for making your videos i really appreciate them they help me learn a bit more about myself and what i need to work on:)

I have been going to the psychologist for this problem, she never gave me a solution or exercises that could help me, that made me feel frustrated and trapped. You can't imagine how this video made me feel, it's nice to have hope and to know that there really are many things I can do to improve.

Emma, this video and all your others (well, I'll speak for all the ones I've seen) have been instrumental in my continued practice and growing self-confidence in recovery from a really distressing period of existential anxiety, deep depression, and adjustment to new stage of life (out of academia, into the real world). It's been months in the making and even today I've felt some fears of uncontrollable/unbearable anxiety come back, but I am really practicing mindfulness and living my values and processing emotions with your course! And I am seeing the changes in my life despite stressors and worries still being present. Thank you so much for making these resources, they are literally helping me change my life. You rock! Thank you for this video! I struggle with anxiety and all everyone has ever told me was to just go to a therapist… Not that there’s anything wrong going with a therapist but at this current moment I don’t have the funds or the healthcare to cover the cost… So many videos out there will just give you bland advice such as try sleeping more, eating better, exercising more -those things are great but when I feel terrible or panicky it doesn’t help in the moment

What useful for me was to watch this presentation, what I learn of It, is that you have to confront your anxiety with willingness, taking action even with little steps, without fear, anxiety is our subconscious brain trying to tell us justo that, moving on is the best way to end that feeling.

I am going to make a doctor's appointment soon to finish my vaccinations for college, and I am terrified of having my blood pressure taken. I am a very healthy individual, but every time I get my blood pressure taken it shoots out of control because I feel pressured to make it appear normal. This turns into a vicious cycle of me trying to lower my heart rate and being anxious after failing to do so. I hope to have better control of my nerves soon. :)

This is called "white coat hypertension" it's very common, some people get anxious about their blood pressure when they get it checked and the anxiety pushes the blood pressure reading up. Most doctors understand this and if you talk to the doctor about it before the test they have ways of dealing with it, my doctor just leaves the cuff on my arm and talks to me about other unrelated things even making some silly jokes, and he just takes the reading several times without telling me while we are talking about something else.

You are so not alone, I am a very healthy person myself but I get afraid as soon as someone is measuring my pulse rate or bp and then i get anxious that my bp is high or pulse rate, It helps to just acknowledge how you feel and let yourself be. Also meditation, prayers, exercise has been a game changer for me. Sending you love🥹

Thank you for these videos. My life recently has been amazing and I've been feeling great. I grew up isolated and probably was somewhere on the deep end of aspd. I recently caught feelings for a girl in my class and blew it, and it's been a very human, humbling experience. I'm happy that I've grown enough to actually feel things deeper and more complex than "nothing goes my way" or "she was a b**** anyways". She made me extremely anxious and I was just overall not a pleasure to be around. So I am learning how to healthily handle all of these new emotions I learned I have. I probably shouldn't be writing this out, because I'm working on keeping a journal and fixing my emotions internally and with myself, so that I can be completely honest and accept the emotions as they come (I have to break the rigid black and white mindset I have about "being honest", because I just share way too much to others). I've learned when people say "it's okay", they don't mean the situation is okay, or that they're telling you to be okay. They always just meant, it's okay to be hurt and vulnerable. I always took that as a command to find a solution and "fix" what's wrong. Like oh what you're feeling is fine, get over it, it's not a big deal. I never understood that till now. So I write to myself in my journal and explain my emotions to myself and understand and accept them. It's okay to feel stupid. It's okay to be hurt. It's okay to be embarrassed. After enough writing in a day, I will have the urge to obsess over my emotions, but then I imagine myself getting up and grabbing my journal, and I realize "I already know how I feel. It hurts. There's nothing else to write/do. It's okay." Your videos have been helping me a lot. I haven't watched too many, but the ones I have watched have really helped me sort of understand what causes me to think how I do, and why I haven't accepted it. I am now learning to accept and even embrace the emotions I spent my whole life trying to avoid. It honestly feels good to be able to cry. The first girl I thought I loved cheated on me and I outwardly didn't care at all. I just shutdown and avoided how it made me feel because...well I'm not sure what fear I had of my emotions. Maybe I thought I'd kms, or get ridiculed, or any countless number of insecure fears I have/had because I essentially grew up alone with no one to learn from emotionally. Anyways, this is a very long message, and I do hope you read it, but I understand if you don't/won't. P.S. Do you know any resources for increasing emotional intelligence? I can't read people, nor can I read myself ("diagnosed" with alexthymia at 14).

Also, because you did mention in it this video, learning that my thoughts and emotions aren't "me" has been a real game-changer. As I said I am most likely on the aspd spectrum, and I frequently have very bad thoughts, and I'd get so tangled up in those, that somewhere along the line as a child, I became my thoughts/emotions. I became a violent/angry/hateful person. Instead of knowing "oh that's a thought, weird. Good thing it's not who I am, and is just passing thought.", I really just adopted and sat in those emotions until they became my entire personality and my entire reason for living. The other day I was really sad and I was thinking "I could just walk in front of this bus and no more hurting". It was a very weird moment because when I had those thoughts before, I'd really have to fight and convince myself not to do it. I'd seriously weigh the pros and cons until I realized rationally that dying was suboptimal. However, now I just think the thought, let it go. It's just a thought.

17:45 The writing things down thing is so helpful. I'm anxious because I'm worried about 1 or 2 things, then literally 20 other things at the SAME exact time. It's too much and I just get the important things done and that's it

Anxiety before a presentation, is nervousness, Anxiety in social situations is shyness. I suffer real debilitating anxiety where it causes palpations, difficulty breathing, a real sense of dread, feeling like you are dying, dizzyness, nausea, etc. I wish everyone wouldn't label normal nerve racking or socially awkward situations as anxiety. There is a huge difference between these situations and real Panic, Anxiety and Anxiety Disorders. We all have moments when we have to deal with nervousness, or social awkwardness but real, life altering Anxiety is a totally different disorder.

How did you deal with it ? I’ve been dealing with the same thing since October 22 and it’s dreadful because I even quit my job due to this and I have this intense fear whenever I go out or see people. I wasn’t like this before, I was very social and I never experienced any anxiety until October last year where I had my first severe panic attack, things started going downhill after my panic attack and now I feel stuck in this bubble, I feel very weak, and sick and tired. I just want to get over this fear and get back to my life 😢

@@csick11 Hi, thank you for asking, I’m doing alright now, making a progress to get back step by step, I did make the decision to get medical help which I was avoiding for so long back then because I was in denial of my mental health.. I’m on antidepressants and doing cognitive therapy, it helped a lot. I’m back to work and trying to find things that helps me to get through it and keep me busy as well.

@sarahns8952 very proud of you. I started to experience panic attack for first time since summer 2023. I eventually seek help. Doing lab work, went to ER, called emt then finally seeking help. I take herbal pills called stress factors. It helps me relax. I haven't taken any since January but last night I had to take it again. I thought I was doing better but I guess it's a big improvement since I'm not taking meds daily. I'm looking to get back to work now. Doing interviews. That might have been cause of anxiety past week buildup. What kind of work do you do?

Funny how anxiety, depression , PTSD is effecting people in different ways. I'm 37 years old, business owner for 14 years and now I'm sitting with this at my age. I get extremely fast heart rate accompanied with chest pain. No sweating, No out of breath like a heart attack. Been to hospitals numerous times and always the same test done to clear heart and its always my panic/anxiety attacks. I find it vary difficult to stay calm, What usually helps is medication or just talking to someone. I don't have people to phone 3 am in the mornings

depression and/or anxciety can be symptoms of an actual ptsd or c-ptsd. i think thats why is different to people. but often therapists focus only to "fix" one of those 2 when you need different strategies and therapies with ptsd and people wonder why it doesn't work good for them. a look at the bigger picture is often needed to find out if it's a ptsd or not. but thats just my point of knowledge 😀

Tysm for this video🧡 I suffer from premenstrual dysphoric disorder & i was diagnosed with anxieties when i was 13-14. I never knew it could catch up to me. 2 months ago, i had a strange change in my body that made me overly freak out, so i went to the ER because i was desperate. Turns out I just had high sugar (junk food) but my anxiety made these symptoms feel worse for me. I got help & was prescribed Hydroxyzine Pamoate, which worked good but gave me a terrible headache. I stopped taking them 2 weeks ago, feeling happy since it was easy to tackle anxiety lately until ovulation. I overthinked a lot today and i just want to sleep. I took my medicine again but I’m not sure if its working. Im currently doing an aromatherapy right now, as well as watching this video while nodding my head. Its quite useful! Now i can just sleep like this!

I have had very high levels of anxiety due to CPTSD. One of the things I learned is when I have repeated or intrusive thoughts, I write them down in a journal. I have gone from just writing the thoughts down, to trying to find the triggers behind the thoughts. The more I do this, the better I am at recognizing my triggers, and I am better able to reduce my anxiety. It's hard and painful work, but I am becoming more comfortable at reducing my anxiety and depression every day. While I was not able to learn this skill in time to save my marriage, I am hopeful it will lead to a brighter, healthier future.
