your story is exactly like mine. im 5'1 but since the flyers now are litterally 4 feet tall im not flying this season. i got so jealous of my friends that still got to fly. this video helped me sooooo much. i am an allstar cheerleader and im hoping i can fly again someday. maybe when im in highschool i can try out for the highschool cheer team.idk but anyways ty again

Same like no one really understands how hurtful it is to come into the new season to find out your not flying and after I was told I wasn’t going to be a flyer I lost a lot of flexibility because not stunting and my coach thought bases didn’t need to work on that just strength and tumbling and now it’s hard to do scorpions and stuff like that and also my jumps got really bad but I have been taking privates to work on my flexibility more
@courtneyf54978 жыл бұрын
From a coaches standpoint, THANK YOU for understanding why we do what we do. For all the girls who are not longer flying, Please understand that it hurts us, coaches, just as much as it hurts you to have to see you come down. I've had a lot of my athletes since they were 8 and 9 years old. A lot of them are now seniors and literally taller than me and I'm 5'8". As Erin stated, you are NOT fat or imperfect or bad. I don't know if it's something in the water or what the deal is but the girls keep getting smaller and smaller. For those thinking of switching gyms just to fly, is it really worth it? Is it really worth leaving your family for your own selfish reasons? I had an athlete who gave me a hard time all season because she wasn't flying and I'll have you know that when we won the summit this year not once was not being able to fly a concern of hers as she ran to the announcer to get her picture taken with the banner. My point in saying that is at the end of the day, you guys take the floor as one. You rise as one and you fall as one. I promise you, if it were possible we would fly each and every girl who ever wanted to fly. We do not like seeing you all hurt but at the end of the day we have to do what's best for the team.
@carolinestanley_37 жыл бұрын
the flyer stereotype is so stupid, they only put the tiny girls in the air, not caring whether they've had experience or not
@llplays68536 жыл бұрын
caroline ya know I'm not trying to be rude, but my gym doesn't do that. They don't let people that are bad at flying fly, and they pair the bigger flyers with the bigger bases and the smaller flyers with the smaller bases.
@olivialewis31298 жыл бұрын
Some places like bigger flyers though. Senior elite doesn't have the shortest or skinniest and they do just fine. You may go off to college and be fine as a flyer. And besides, double downs are wayyyy more impressive with flyers that are taller/more built and those are some of the best! Any small girl can fly because they are small but body control is what sets bigger flyers apart. Don't get down on being muscular, tall, or normal because it's not a curse. Most people aren't gonna be able to hold a child figure forever.

Thank you so much for acknowledging to be grateful. It’s so important to be grateful for cheer and in general, but thank you for acknowledging that some people don’t get to cheer. I went to a cheer camp in the summer. I’ve been in love with cheer ever since I was tiny. Since the gym I went to doesn’t currently offer an adaptive team, I can’t cheer for right now. They are working on building one, but I don’t know how long it will take. To everyone who is in this flyer situation, I know it’s hard but you are strong. Imagine not being able to do what you love. If I can make it through this, you most certainly can make it through that. I would be eternally grateful for any stunt position, it’s just not that easy. Always continue doing what you love, even if you’re not doing it exactly the way you planned.

I am in love with this video. I was a flyer for 2 and 1/2 years and half way through the season a new girl joined my team and I was flying half and half with another flyer. Then I was completely pulled out of the stunt and was a front spot for the rest of the season. This year I'm actually basing and not just standing around so I'm super happy now. This video helped me realize that I'm not the only one this happens to. Love you Erin!

I couldn't agree with any video in youtube more then this one. I was a flyer all last year and I love it, but now that I have grown like 30 pounds this whole season, and I couldn't fly because I felt like I was too fat. But the truth is, I was so caught up in lies about myself I just could balance. They moved me out of centre into back. Now there training me to base. I miss flying but now when i need motivation I'll come to you :) Thanks Erin

i worked hard and i still am working hard in order to gain the flexibility i needed to be a flyer on my high school team. and at practice for the past week i did beginner stunts with a set stunt group that was assigned to me and i was the flyer. well today, this girl came in that wasn’t here for practice or conditioning ever since it started because i’m guessing she had vacation or something??? and mind you she is kinda smaller than me, i’m 5’4” and i weigh 95 pounds, and i was on the taller side. and it ended up being that my coach replaced me and put her in my place and now i’m her front spot i guess for now. i asked my coach “so am i permanently a front spot or?” (i didn’t wanna ask if i had a chance of being a flyer) but she just told me that i’m eventually gonna be a backspot when we have all of our team members at practice. and i’m still upset about it because it felt like to me that they got my hopes up a little :(. hopefully this will change because it really hurts to find out that all of your hard work just got thrown out the window because someone was more fit for the job.

thank you so much for this! I used to fly for like 2 years and loved it but then the next season my team had really tiny and flexible so I front spotted mainly everything. Luckily I had a few other friends this had happened to so I wasn't the only one. It was still extremely difficult because you have to accept that even though it's not what you want but it may be the best for your team at the time. At first you think there's something wrong with you but everyone has to gain weight and grow eventually. It still is very hard for me not being a flyer and realizing I'm not tiny anymore . I'm learning to get through it and I got to fly the other day so!

My last season I was on senior 2 and was a flyer. I was 16, 5'3" and 115lbs and this was significantly bigger than the other flyers who were 12, and 70-80lbs. Although in a stunt I got injured and partially tore ligaments in my knee so I was not able to cheer for nearly 3 months. During this time I was replaced with a flyer and when I returned due to the circumstances of the team with many injuries etc. I was no longer able to fly because there were no bases big enough for me. This was my fourth year flying so it was difficult mid season to be told I would no longer fly and it was especially hard since if I hadn't have been injured I still would've had my position. I had never based before and had a positive attitude towards it despite wanting to fly and missing being in the air. I never complained about it and always tried my best but my love for flying wasn't the same for basing. In the end it was hard to accept but I did accept it because it was about the team and my love for cheer

I flew all my life since little league in 2nd-5th grade. When we moved here, I started a gym and flew there too. But then my tumbling wasn't good enough to actually compete so we switched gyms. I made Junior 1, but I was the oldest so I back spotted. At first I was upset, but my flyers loved me, and would tell me "thank you" every time I caught them. But, every one keeps saying I would fly this season, when I was on senior age. Well, now I have to have jaw surgery this summer and can't cheer at all until I'm cleared (which is like 2-3 months after the surgery and I haven't even had it yet!) So yeah I'm hoping to do senior prep/half year and possibly fly. But, I would rather get to cheer and not fly then not cheer at all!

I was never the most flexible but I was okay, I did have good control in the air and I was really light. After tryouts, however, we got new girls her weren't smaller but lighter than me, but who also weren't very good fliers. It did hurt to be pulled and I ended up backspotting, but it does get better. I still miss cheer 😢 I wish I could go back but finances and schedule

My school doesn’t care about size they put the best flyers in the air (usually) regardless of size. However weight does come into hand depending on the bases.

I was not a flyer in 7th grade, they kept saying I was "too tall" I was roughly 5'2 but I'm very skinny. I kept asking if I could fly and they let me do a few plain extension sponge downs and prep cradles. In 8th grade I was an on again off again flyer and in the routine I was flying in a shoulder sit, It wasn't exactly what I wanted to do but it was a step in the right direction and that was enough. This year I'm 5'4 and a full time flyer, the reason I actually became one was because I missed half a day of clinics and didn't have a stunt group to try out with so some seniors and juniors stunted me and I actually got the best score out of all the freshmen flyers so they let me do it full time.

And this season they might be the flyers even though 1. They are not flexible 2. They aren’t tight. 3. They don’t trust the bases which you need to, they get scared. And I’m flexible and when I was a flyer my bases told me I was really tight. It’s really annoying.
