Note to women: we tend to raise not only our voices when stressed, but our pitch as well. What has worked for me (for 41 years) is to posture myself as equal (which means standing up at times), also lowering my voice & pitch and speak very slowly (so the asshole can understand!). I have also called physicians on their behavior, sometimes even in front of the terrified patient who is witnessing the abuse. Interestingly, the physician usually will apologize & I have never been abuse twice by anyone. I had a roomful of patients in the Emergency Department once even applaud me for my reacting in a dignified manner (the doc was yelling at me OVER a hemorrhaging post-tonsillectomy patient)! lol, no, this doesn't seem believable. did you know that many physicians are .. WOMEN THEMSELVES? hahaha. like. lets just admit that men raise their voices and pitch far more when stressed.. they just don't have nearly as much to stress about because the planet caters to them. i work a much more cognitively and intellectually rigorous job than any nurse or physician, and i WILL continue to speak *exactly * as i wish to whomever makes the very foolish decision to condescend to me or any other innocent human.

I am currently in the exact opposite side. And her latest refusal to see her (ice on road and I'm sick) she both refused to refill my antidessant (after my dad recently died) and said she would be discharging me from the practice. You can't or shouldn't cold turkey withdrawals from that! And so depressed, anxious, and I had a seizure since she cut me off. Edit: I've never had a seizure before, ever.

Yep, this is another thing that happens a lot. Its all part of the stress that this line of work causes. However, its not ok and nurses should defend themselves. Don’t let doctors or other staff treat you like that. Speak up and tell them that you don’t deserve to be talked like that and that you’re just looking out for your patients.

Hi Ashley, thanks for the tips. I was yelled by this well known rude surgeon in my hospital in front of the patient and my superior just for weaning down morphine as my patient did not complaint any pain post operatively. His demeaning behaviour affects me a lot. I can't tolerate rude people.

Just my opinion: Rudeness of physicians towards nurses are not exclusively towards nurses, but just think - if these docs are rude to nurses, they probably are just as mean if not meaner - to their own interns, med students and especially their residents.. real story.

I got dumped on 24/7 by nurses while I was a resident, and could not figure out why. My best guess is that nurses were treated like garbage by older physicians, but turning around and exerting your frustration on residents isn't exactly going to fix the system.

I have just gone through the most traumatizing experience with the surgeon who removed part of my lung (cancer). He is officious, impatient, and plain old MEAN. It is amazing that any person, possessing the power to make terrified, hurting patients feel better, CHOOSES to do the opposite. I am not a nurse, and am sadly stuck with him. I consider him an adversary. This is hell, and he blithely chooses to make it harder. I just don't understand that type of shitty, misery-spreading choice.

What if your a patient that has been disrespected and treated rude by a Dr. and you really need their medical treatment and don't have a easy option to replace them for particular reasons, how do you keep them from dropping you as a disabled patient? Please let me know? Thanks for your video!

I’m a 64 year old retired RN and boy, do I have some stories about not just rude doctors but MEAN AND ABUSIVE doctors. And years ago, doctors could treat nurses like dirt and get away with it. In those days, doctors had a god complex because they were treated like a god. The docs didn’t get written up, reprimanded or anything like that. In fact, no one said a word to them about their abhorrent behavior. Thank goodness things have changed, at least a little bit.

I had another encounter with a RUDE orthopedic doctor. The annoying thing is both of them are contradicting each other and they are both rude. They bot CUT me off when I explain esp with the history. They freaking blame me for everything 🙄 Why didn't u buy this expensive injection and even surgery. Then the other would say, you shouldn't get this injection or surgery because that over acting. Like ugh

Working with one ICU doctor who really rude to asian nurses. When other nurses joking with him, he seems really cool to everything. But when the asian nurses tell him about what’s going on with the patient and asking for orders, he always say: “I don’t know!” in a very rude tone. When this happens a lot, I just chart xxx reported to this doctor about the information but no orderes received. 🙄

Thanks Ashley, RN here. If you don't call them on it, on the spot, they have already won. They get to be jerks, and you continue being polite. I don't tolerate rude doctors anymore. I've had a couple of complaints, but I've gotten more apologies. You don't have to swallow your anger, as long as you don't use inappropriate language. Some people get their asses kissed long enough, they start to believe their ass is made of candy. It is our duty to inform them to the contrary.

If They are rude to nurses, how do they treat their patients? One other thing if no action s taken write in your nurse's notes and your charge nurse or supervisor. Nurse are their doing tbeir job. The doctor may not doing his.

I'm a first semester RN student and love watching your videos. I think you should do one on stress doctors are under and how doctors feel when nurses take up their time with silly calls. I think just understanding doctors better, will help nurses view their responses in a more positive light and result in less hurt feelings. Just my opinion. Keep making vids and God Bless!

Hello, I'm currently in nursing school. 3rd semester. I guess it depends on your school, but I would make sure I knew the cranial nerves and what they do really well. You'll need it for physical assessment. I wouldn't look up videos on physical assessment though, because I find that every nursing school teaches it differently or focuses on different skills. Practice using a sphygmomanometer (blood pressure tool). That's always helpful. Invest in a good stethoscope, doesn't have to be the most expensive, but get one that will allow you to hear heart and lung sounds clearly. :) hope that helps. Good luck!

+Nesss E It's definitely important to have a good understanding of A&P. The disease processes and their treatments are more so taught in the program. At least, that's the case in my program. Brush up on A&P if you feel a little rusty. I made sure to do that before I started the program, as well. :)

In my medical office the scheduling person called me I know their busy and one person to do it all. Was never once mean. She went off yelling at me to stop yelling at her when I said um ma'am I'm not yelling at you at all I'm talking to you than said it again after 20 second silence and I said the same thing idk if she was stressed and taking it out on me idk but I was in tears. Called my doctor's office and she did nothing but she lied even to a different person asked her about it. It's hard to not let it bother me or take it personally. Bc I would never ever be mean or rude ECT. Idk what to do in my case. And this was for mental health and my panic attacks. Which so didn't help. What can I do about my aggressive doctor who laughed and joked about my problems and called me a liar, that day I hadn't slept for two nights and my body was aching all over! I went to see I'm to get some relief and when I asked him if he knew how I felt,( wasn't shouting but very frustrated,! He then rolled his chair towards me got in my face and told me not to piss him off and he said he would throw me out,! I was so shocked and upset, never experienced anything like it!

I hate to see any of the nurses taking care of me or any of the nurses in my family (there are a bunch of us, it's definitely in our DNA) being treated unfairly by higher ups, ESPECIALLY residents. They seem to get the idea that they are the greatest, absolutely infallible, special beings on the planet and should never EVER be questioned, by anyone, under any circumstance (unless the attending shows up l o l)...at least nurses aren't the only targets, I suppose. I would hopefully have been in my last year of nursing school right now, had I not gotten sick....but I think I actually spend more time in the hospital than most nurses because I did get so sick haha. I hope someday I'll be able to take all my patient experience and use it to take care of others as an RN - it'll take a miracle at this point, but I still have some hope. I'd love to have you as my nurse - as a patient or a student. Everyone who does have you - in whatever way - is very lucky to have you.

Thank you for your video. I work in IT and am in constant communication with Drs and nurses. A lot of the Drs assume IT employees are their Sidekicks and are unintelligent. As if a dr degree means they passed all Courses with As. We are very intelligent but don’t have the financial means and at times the connection and and ability to go for theses degrees I have no children but work to assist my family of 7 sibilants mother single mother and is an immigrant turned citizen. The Drs and some nurse or NPs are very arrogant to The point of disrespect. I’m sorry but I do not accept disrespect. Kiss my ass with that. First off all I’m not in medical field whatsoever. I appreciate see something like this because three years ago. I saw a doctor on a yearly checkup because I have aortic stenosis. surgery when I was 1 and 21 so heart check ups all my life. I missed one appointment had to reschedule at this time it was after my second open heart surgery. I’m sitting across from the doctor when he walks in(this is a new doctor for check up mind you) he proceeded to tell me how my mom needs to stop taking care of me, that I need to get a “real” job with real insurance(he sounded like a dick) Not even understanding that I work basically full time outside of college. Barely able to pay for anything also keep in mind my parents helped with zero money for school. I honestly haven’t gone back since for a checkup. Should I go back? Is it okay for doctors to say things like that to a patient?

Im sorry but a charge nurse will not work. I just had 2 majorrrrr operations in 1 year , this year. Im in my recliner now going through recovery. Its a secret thing going on out there when your laying in the hosptial and how your treated. So thank you for putting out awareness for this. My charge nurse was so short and rude with me and my husband. Its like they dont want to b there. No argueing going on. Just wierd inpatient treatment as if they dont want to b bothered. It was miraculous, and no one knows its going on. No one would believe it anyway i dont think. They get the big bucks , but get by with alot. I guess all you can do is pray. Ive surely done that. I hope this becomes a big awareness in society.

I think they should make residents and medical students watch your video and the countless others on youtube about disrespectful behavior toward nurses. The more specialized the doctor the more potential for abuse. I agree that every doctor who treats part of the medical team with bullying or disrespect should be reported. Bullying in any form is no longer tolerated in our society. Only if there is light brought on this will there be change. In the past sexual abuse was rarely reported and now it is getting the attention it needs in order for there to be change.

medical students have stated that their teachers tell them "always appreciate your nurses". in my opinion, it is not the millenial docs who are rude, but the older docs who got a different approach to their training.

Andreea Nasca I agree. I think in the past, before the profession became what it is today, nurses were expected to just wait around on the doctor until they gave the orders to do something. So perhaps because they're older, they grew up with that idea in their practice. There are also people that think they're hot stuff for having a certain title, which may add some arrogance and rude behavior.

I am a dietary aide and the doctors and nurses love to mess with me. They never put the diet orders in then fuss at me about their patients not getting food when I tell them they never put the order in I’m met with an eye roll. These are the people we’re suppose for depend on when we’re sick and they treat anyone who isn’t a doctor or a nurse like complete garbage. It’s definitely changed my view on the medical field. Someone comment I always respect everyone “even” housekeeping. The even right there shows me the arrogance a lot of medical staff have. I’m ignored and I’m looked down by a lot y’all. I had a chest infection and doc said no you haven’t , seen another doc, got on antibiotics and need to go for X-ray us as patients need to moan as it’s our body we know when we feel sick

Had a doctor say to me, she was in charge now, she was going to make sure I was not helped, I have to do everything she says. She knows everything about me. I said that I would'nt be doing anything she said. She discharged me from patient list. Had been at practise for 10 years, seeing other doctor, she previously laughed openly in reception at some of my problems, and I complained was 10 years ago, until recently Had not seen her since, but she answered enquiry from goverment 3 years ago as if she was my doctor and said was no medical issues. I was actually being treated for 5 issues, unsure what to do, as she seems to be on commitee very high up, appraises other doctors, if I complain to board she is member of I do not thing I will be listened to.

My doctor is arrogant and snapped at me for asking for a VERY important paper that will maybe give me a chance for another college interview. Because I'm sick and also I told her the truth. I didn't study at all and I'm sick.

I am a patient and my Dr. is a condescending A-hole. I darn near knocked him on his ass! Thank you, but I am on public aid for Burgers, (very painful) and he acts like I intended to contract it just to get pain meds. I never did them before, and I REALLY hate to have to take them. He is constantly threating to "kick me out of the program" I may leave any way and just drink myself silly every day instead. I thank you for your video, and as soon as I can find another Dr. to treat me, I will take action and file many complaints, give him bad reviews online, but before I do any of that...hire a lawyer.

Yeah, anything that fits your narrative of nurses being saints and evil doctors being babies. I'm sure all of the stories here are true, there's definitely a lot of assholes in medicine, especially surgery, but you don't even want to hear stories from the other side. I've heard horrific stories about nurses, too. Just stop generalizing.

Letting doctors get away with bad behavior is a huge reason why doctors think they can continue to act and behave and talk to nurses the way that they do in such a rude, unprofessional, condescending, arrogant way. More and more nurses need to start standing up for thethemselves and addressing the issue right then and there with the doctor regarding the way that nurse is being talked to as well as filing a complaint about the issue.
