WOO HOO! I am so glad Dr. Prater and I could finally sit down and chit chat more about nurse/doctor communication. Having great communication is KEY and Dr. Prater is a pro at it (hence why I brought him on here). :) Make sure you leave him some love in the comments below (tell him he is handsome...he likes that ;), and don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to his channel below! Oh, and watch until the end for some hilarious bloopers!

Drew blood from a doctor once, I freaked out once I saw his lanyard but then he started joking around and talking to me, love it when they're down to earth as well, very welcoming.

I'm in my second semester and we are taught to communicate by SBAR format. It's Situation-what's going on Background- history Assessment- what you want to ask Recommendation- what you want to happen

I'm a med student and we also learn SBAR for our clin comm OSCE's. We speak to our attendings and senior residents in the same format as how nurses communicate with us.

I found this video extremely useful, being a relatively new nurse myself when I started I was so intimidated by doctors. I was afraid and I thought that their education and experience and knowledge dwarfed mine. The respect I had for doctors bordered on reverent and I was a bit jealous for a long time. I became a nurse out of interest and necessity but because I had a calling. A lot of doctors I think are living my ultimate dream. But as I got more experienced I began to realise that doctors and nurses work in different ways with differing levels of scope for the same goal and therefore they should really work together and not be afraid of each other. I then got less afraid and more ready to advocate for my patient, ore ready to ask for what I need in the correct way and to anticipate what’s needed by the medical team out loud. The times when I get to work closely with doctor son the floor are priceless for me now, I live for those times because that’s when I learn the most.

Such a good interview with excellent information! I hear a lot of these same "fears" with new Nurses I mentor. But, I've also hear some awesome stories about Doctors and Nurses. I like how you stressed the importance of working together :-)

This is exactly the kind of open communication that's needed between docs and nurses in hospital settings. Interesting that it's almost revolutionary that Ashley just asks him what he needs and likes in his role. Ashley, maybe you've done another video in which a doctor asks a nurse what she/he needs in that working relationship from physicians ... if not, perhaps you'd consider doing it. Wonderful video ... thanks so much to you both.

This is a great topic about communication. This brings back memories to my bedside ICU days. Now that I'm going into advanced practice I'm understanding the providers' viewpoint more clearly.

Thanks to both for this informative video! I'd love to see more videos with Dr. Prater about ICU and maybe learn a thing or two from him related to disease processes and how they make decisions to correct them. Communication is so important and this was a nice reminder on how to approach MDs. Wish all doctors were as down to earth as Dr. Prater! Thanks for your time!

Thats nice that Dr. Prater came on your channel to talk about the doctor to nurse relationship and communication because this is hugely important. I believe that there should be mutual respect because patients depend on our care and it is vital to have that communication and respect. So doctors should be more respectful with nurses and not be rude or hang up the phone because when we call we obviously call for a reason and not to chit chat.

Yikes, he must have been drowning in $500K debt minimum. I am a med student in my first year and I changed careers as well, but I was in the Army first, so instead of going deeper in debt, the Army pays for my med schooling. Good choice changing careers! I love med school.

For me, Im a junior in high school and I decided to start volunteering at a local hospital. While I'm not doing anything a nurse gets to do, I am able to see what it is truly like in a hospital, and thats how I figured out nursing is something I truly want to do.
