Prophet Muhammad pbuh said: “By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, there is no man who calls his wife to his bed and she refuses, but the One Who is above the heavens [i.e. Allah] will be angry with her, until he (her husband) is pleased with her.” Also, Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: ‘If a man calls his wife to his bed and she refuses [and does not come], and he spends the night angry with her, the angels will curse her until morning.’” (Reported by al-Bukhari, 4794)

Been there… husband is disrespectful, rude, inconsiderate, mean, etc. Wants sex. Woman expected to please him. What about her needs? Her need to be treated with respect and dignity? Does she not have the right to refuse then? I don’t mean for this to come off as rude but this is a huge issue. If I’m going to say my shahada, I’ll be expected to marry a Muslim man. If this is what is expected of me, I need to reconsider.

@@Xtine72 a marriage is about harmony. In a case like that if a husband is not within Islamic bounds, then the wife can ask for community arbitration to fix it. If it doesn't work, during and after 3 menstrual cycles, she can ask for permission for a divorce. If there is violence and it is provable, a religious judge known as a kadi can grant the divorce. Also, the belief in an afterlife of heaven for all hardships in this world is the gain at the end of the day. Islam is about dignity for the man and woman.

If you've seen a lot of different cultures, you'll find that some are really strange to Western people. The strange thing is that the verse that talks about this is in the Qur'an, not hadith. But in the hadith there is a modification of the verse where the "beating" is more symbolic after other things have been tried. The hadith says to beat the woman lightly with a miswak, (like a toothbrush) I don't understand the whole reasoning behind this, because this kind of behavior will not bring a woman around, it will make her hate you. I know that in the time of the Prophet, the Arabs would beat a woman for anything or nothing. I guess that introducing a breakdown of actions to take was meant to slow down the sequence of events that might follow a suspected infraction. I don't know. First of all, if a man has to talk to a woman over a period of time, and ignore her in bed over a period of time, he will probably have forgotten what he was mad about by the time it's time to beat her. Or at least the "killer" energy will have dispersed by then. As I said, I don't know, but there are enough great things in Qur'an and Hadith that I believe in them anyway. I put some things on hold until I do understand them. I became muslim about 40 years ago.

O My servants, it is but your deeds that I account for you, and then recompense you for. So he who finds good, let him praise Allah, and he who finds other than that, let him blame no one but himself. - Sahih Muslim

Sheikh in the modern days these steps leading to too many divorces. Absolutely can't be any beating, i think best to talk about the differences and allow time to fix things, ultimately if agreement cant be reached, separate for few months to reflect on things, divorce has to last resort. Save Muslim families and keep family foundation strong insha'Allah

The beating is according to the Hadith : do not leave a mark, do not touch the face, do not cause pain. How is that a beating ? That’s a simbolic touch to show that this is not a joke you are going to destroy the family. If the simbolic touch does not work then you divorce because there is no solution
