Hearing that I can keep things set aside, has taken the fear out of decluttering for me, I have some clothes set aside, that in a month now I've only went into it once to grab something I thought of, so now I'm almost ready without looking at it, without hesitation, to give it up, and I going to try this with other items, to push myself through, 😊

After spending all sorts of money over the years on electric can openers only to be disappointed time and time again, I spent $2.42 on a manual opener from Walmart three years ago. It works like a charm and takes up far less space.

I love the idea of having a storage of items you may use later in another season of life. For example, my hair wand. I don’t use now but I could see using it again. Why get rid of it, but I also don’t need it in my way every day. If you have room to store a few bins of extra stuff it makes decluttering so much easier for me

The problem I have with holding onto things isn't because I think I might need it later; it's because "I earned this, I deserve to have nice things" - and just because I no longer live in a larger house with rooms and display shelves and bookcases and tables with doors to contain my belongings and closets (kept orderly like a department store - nothing is crammed in like a nightmare) shouldn't mean I need to purge it all away. I was in a longterm marriage and it's been a few years since the divorce. Everything that was "his" got donated right away - job accomplished Week One! But everything else - I worked hard to save up to buy those things and it feels like another failure in life if I toss things out and feel like I'm living in a dorm room in every room of my house 😮‍💨

I don't really have a backup bin of my favorites, but we do have a camping bin with things that work, but wouldn't be the end of the world if we lost them. If something we loved broke, we could substitute something from there until the favored item could be replaced.

I get most of it - just the sheet / linen situation not so much. You have to wash them from time to time. Even if you have a dryer (which I personally don’t have) - what happens if you spill something or your kid has a nose bleed at night or whatever - then you can’t switch the linen, because this was the only set? That doesn’t sound very practical. Or am I getting something wrong?

There are many other reasons too. I get very attached to all my possessions. I want to fix the broken, mend, up cycle. I find it wasteful to throw things away not because ‘I might use them one day’ but because this is wasteful period. The planet is drowning in plastic, garbage, other results of overconsumption. Completely different reason.

This is an issue for me too Our creator will not allow a n unrecoverable ruination of his creation But we are individually responsible in how we conduct our lives We can only do so much within a society that is materialistic and self occupied and can’t be responsible for others decisions Try using Bach flower pine to support a proper sense of responsibility which is related to inappropriate guilt And reach out to the creator for support in decisions of daily life And see magic happen

This is such a great list of extras to keep on hand. My partner just broke our 1 cup measurer today so I was glad to have a backup. I think he accidentally threw out our can opener so I was lucky to have a backup in my daughter's stash from when she went to college. I eventually had to buy her a new one when she moved out though.

I'm sorry this is the first video of yours that I've seen where I disagree with you. I would never keep that much random stuff in reserve. I'm more inclined to replace something if/when it breaks instead of having extra items "just in case". For example I have had one single pizza cutter for like 10 years and it hasn't broken. I can't imagine just keeping an extra one just in case. If I dif have mine break in the middle of slicing pizza I'd just grab a knife to finish the job and then replace it later. Or of i had a mixing bowl break, replace it at that time instead of having all this back stock of non essential items. Just my opinion.
@charmingintrovert3240
@charmingintrovert3240 Жыл бұрын
I agree with you Carah! Especially when items like the wooden spoon, pizza cutter, can opener and dish rag are so cheap at thrift stores and can so easily be replaced the next time you're out on errands. There was nothing special about the towels she bothered to keep and the bowl/baking dish are more susceptible to breakage storing them this way.
@goodenoughgirl8102

I was laughing at myself with the pizza cutter. I keep two but for me it’s not for “just in case” Bcuz it’s my fave food. Everything from frozen that I “enhance” to buying pre made crusts/crust mixes or making pizzas from scratch. But def it would make no sense to me if someone isn’t a pizza freak. Lol. But idk. Its diff for everyone I guess. I got both of them at the thrift store also. And well ya know. I used to have 3 or 4. So for me going down to just 2 works pretty well. For me it’s an improvement and a small cost given all the take out I used to get in pizza land. Lol.

Another thought on the backup set of sheets: if kids are sleeping in the house (regularly or as guests), 2 a.m. after cleaning up vomit or a diaper blowout is not the time you would feel like standing around for two hours while you put the sheets through the wash...
@refiner_designer
@refiner_designer 10 ай бұрын
I couldn't live with only 1 back up sheet, where we live we don’t have a dryer or big clothes line, so when I wash the sheets it takes at least 1-2 days for them to dry, which means we obviously need a whole back up set to go on the bed in the mean time... so I just have 2 whole sets, (plus a couple back ups of pillow cases which I wash extra) My struggle with keeping things I think I'll need is creative supplies! I know I should get rid of some of it but I have too many hobbies and DIY projects in mind

@@FancyThatwithCandice After my husband and I married, one of the first purchases for our kitchen was a knife block set. It came with a pair of kitchen scissors/shears - one of the most versatile tools in the knife block. Like Eleanor, can easily use it to cut pizzas and herbs. Also, if you have a string of sausages, it can cut meat easily, cut up food for toddlers. And super easy to wash, you can separate the blades so nothing is stuck in the pivot point. I have a separate pair of scissors for paper, another for thread/fabric and another in the first aid kit for bandages etc. the scissors lasts much longer if you keep different scissors for separate purposes. I am definitely not a scissors minimalist lol. Great video Candice! I really like the idea of a life reserve container, but do you have only one? That life reserve container you had reminded me of Mary Poppins' magic carpet bag!!

I think I have more issues with getting caught up in bringing too much stuff in. Since I live in cut throat deal world, (deep clearance, thrifting etc), it’s often easy come easy go with me but sometimes it’s way too easy to bring it in. I’m admitting that I kinda went crazy on TEMU recently. I had been curious about them for a long time before I finally bit at least. But at least now I was able to be a lot more thoughtful and intentional about all of it. Some of it is for organizing, some are consumables I use, some is hopeful replacement items, some is stuff I wanted for a long time but that always cost too much and some are a few little gifts for others. If anyone is curious, I would say it has a kind of flea market vibe. I haven’t done a flea market in ages so….I let myself at least try it out. My idea is to just test it out. Could be that I’m saving loads compared to Amazon prices. We shall see Bcuz if it’s more like WISH, I prob won’t go back for more. I had to make that confession somewhere tho. Ha ha. My weakness is more with deep dish “deals” and there seem to be plenty on TEMU. lol. Overall tho, I think it’s worth what I spent to find out for myself. Lol.

When I think of back up supplies, I think in my mind, everything I have need of is kept safe and new for me at my neighborhood store. So when I need it then I go buy it. But really for most of these items I already have two, like for instance I have more than one blanket.
@goodenoughgirl8102
@goodenoughgirl8102 Жыл бұрын
@@lindamarquez2864 Yes. I do a lot of the same. I often will use the 20/20 rule when it’s time to possibly let go of something. If I can get it in 20 minutes for under $20 then it doesn’t need to be a struggle or take up too much mental gymnastics to just let it go. I guess I’m just trying out TEMU. I guess I just wanted to find out for myself. Lol. And so if some things don’t work out with it, then easy come easy go and I’ll know more about if I want to shop there again or maybe what to buy there and what not to buy there. Etc.

We have started using disposable foil pans for holidays. Personally, the aesthetics are much lower priority for me than practicality. I would rather own one 9x13 for everyday use and buy foil for each holiday and then be able to throw them away instead of spending extra time washing dishes with holiday parties.

My mother has this challenge about wanting to keep just everything when it comes to sentimental items. She doesn't want to part with hardly any of it, instead of just picking out and saving the things that have the most value in her heart. Like the saying goes: If everything is special, then nothing is special. Lately, we have had times and situations come up when we could have put to use some of the things we got rid of. The "We might need this in the future" time had arrived. Nothing major and or important. Nothing we couldn't live without and had to replace. More like "Uh if I had kept that item, I could have used it now." It's making us not want to part with anything because of that but we are staying on track with our slow but steady decluttering.
