I paused the video to comment about your "Let it Go" tip. Many decades ago, my husband brought home a stuffed animal that I admired in a florist shop. I loved it because it represented love and devotion. Fast forward 30 years, that same stuffed animal symbolized heartache, but I just couldn't part with it. Each day I'd throw it in the trash only to retrieve it hours later. This went on for three days until I finally gave myself permission to let it go. The next day I cut the stuffed animal into pieces and threw it in the trash pail. There were no tears, only a sense of relief.

It did cut in and out but I can still understand and learn from your wonderful video. I can relate to what you are saying. I have a craft room that last year I got it organized. I was so proud. It was easy to maintain for months! Then all of a sudden I bought more craft things that I felt I really needed. It was getting harder to maintain. Then I accidentally broke my leg and my room was a “quick throw things in the craft room because company is coming!” Now that I’m better and walking with no boot…I have a huge task! Little by little I have been working on one spot, one area of the room. I can see my floor! 🤪 thank you for your inspiration and words of wisdom. ❤️💕❤️💕

Hi Norrine, I just want to say thanks. It is a long story but I hadn't heard anyone say before that they ignored everything ( and I mean all of it )because of a situation in their life. I am thankfully coming out of that but it is something I didn't know I had done so it is a hard habit to break. I am grateful to hear that I am not the only person to have handled something difficult in their life this way. I pray for you because I understand, big sigh. I am grateful that you are willing to put all of your life out there so we can have a friend that gets it. Thanks

I too had trouble hearing some of your words ..it kept skipping! But I did get the gist if it, and liked your typed list. I just moved and have 35 boxes in my sp 0:03 are bedroom, that I WANT to be my guest room, so I have much paring down to do. My craft area will now be along one of my kitchen walls so I need to fit things in that one atea only. It IS very hard to let go, even if I havent used the item for a few years, because I might just need it!
@TheCraftyOrganizer7 ай бұрын
😭 I don't know what happened with the sound. So sorry! Those maybe items are so hard. Rank them by how difficult/expensive it would be to replace if you DID ever need it again. Easy to find, inexpensive items can then be let go so that only those harder to replace items are taking up the prime real estate.

I believe that’s definitely me too! I have stuff in storage that’s been there for years that I need to go through n get rid of before my time comes. I don’t want to leave that task to my kids to do. I feel it’s very cruel. I’m still trying to get it started. But did recently come up with a brilliant idea on how to start getting some stuff to the trash that I have separated already without having to rent a very expensive trash bin.
@RuthH-wh5qw7 ай бұрын
One trick that I use in downsizing and decluttering is to take a photo of the things that I am having a hard time letting go of. I think that we struggle to let go because we are afraid we will forget it and the memory it invokes. By taking a photograph, we are keeping that memory close by. If you are a scrapbooker, you could do a scrap book of those photos or even just put them in a photo album and jot down a few notes about them. At some point, you may not “need” the photos anymore but if you do, they will be there. With a much smaller footprint then the items themselves 😊

Hi Norrine! So glad your Dad's doing better!! Boy do I hear you about not being able to focus on anything at all but him while he was in the hospital. I've had times like that and now I'm dealing with the consequences. Unfortunately I don't have a long timetable to allow me to deal with them slowly, because a dear friend has died and her child has to move in with us. That means the back bedroom has to be turned from a storage room back into a bedroom, and oh my gosh I'm not sure I've faced anything so daunting in my life as figuring out where to put everything in order to empty out that room. Do you remember those handlheld slider games, where there's only one square free and you have to move the other squares back and forth (and back and forth again!) to solve the puzzle? That's what this feels like! I'm just grateful I'm not doing it alone. Btw, I think your sound problem is that your microphone is dying. It only seems to pick up every other word or so. Might need serviced.

@@TheCraftyOrganizer Maybe the mic needs to be reset to factory settings? Helps with cellphones sometimes, anyway. I'm not real tech-savvy myself. Thank you so much for understanding my challenges. I was kind of startled last night--up thinking about it till the early wee hours of the morning, actually--that in order to empty the bedroom, I have to rearrange the smaller half of the living room and in order to rearrange that, I have to start in the dining room! And everything's complicated because the a/c-furnace is blowing out a lot of dust, so everything has to be handled and dusted as we go. On the upside, I'm finding things I gave up looking for a couple years ago, things I put away "somewhere safe." OY, isn't that the bane of my life, "somewhere safe" lolol!! I'm so grateful for all your encouragement over the years in your youtubes and in the comments both, so grateful that I know how to start and how to organize things, what to do and what to put off till later (like sorting small things) so I don't get bogged down. Got my fingers crossed that today we can get a lot of furniture moved.

This is something that I WANT TO DO‼️ For my own mental n physical well being. It’s hard enough getting used to a smaller place. My biggest, most delayed organization issue...deceased relative's personal items. Norine! Ahhhh! My Dad, Mom, & Brother are all deceased (2003, 2008, 2010) and I cleaned out and took items from each of their homes all the way across the country only to load them into bins and store them under my stairs. They are out of sight/out of mind. My problem...My Parents were in their 80's and many of the items are jewelry, crystal, collectables/antiques from the 30's-70s..some grandparents stuff too. I'm finding appraisers are just too expensive so I just hang on to them. My brother's items are jewelry, 60's-90's watches, cameras, and electronics. I haven't looked at these items in several years...where do I start??? Thank you!!
@TheCraftyOrganizer7 ай бұрын
Oh, I am so sorry!!!! YES! That is so hard! I'd start with one bin at a time and choose what YOU love and want to use/display. Then try looking up a few of the items to see if they are worth trying to sell. (Ebay, OfferUp, LetGo, Facebook Marketplace) If they are not selling for much, let them go - Donate! I know it hurts to just give those treasures away... but the angst and feeling of being overwhelmed isn't worth the money you'd get from it. Any chance you live in Southern California?

Thank you, Norrine, thank you. Your video listed the items I came up with myself. I absolutely agree, taking breaks in between decluttering sessions is crucial. I have experienced it myself. Either my concentration was running wild, getting distracted, or my psyche was playing nasty games. Believe it or not, I managed to get rid of books, which used to be "sacred" items. The space of a complete shelf unit (with 5 boards) was freed. I'm currently quite a happy person, especially since I figured out what to store where. I organized my decluttering in 4 process steps, 1. creating space by decluttering, 2. grouping roughly all the "want to keep" things by their category, 3. detail sorting of the categories, 4. setting up a maintenance, cleaning, and a selfcare plan. I'm currently at process step 3. Ideas I ruminated over and over are for example: Do I need a tool box for each of my categories or can I toss all of the tools in one box? I found out that each of the categories needs its own tool box. So I have everything of one category together. In which space do I put which category. That means figuring out where you perform your craft. Do you craft at your craft desk, or sit in your camfy TV chair? I do my textile crafts (knitting, crocheting, embroidery) mostly in my TV chair, paper crafts are done at my craft desk. I learned that "point of performance" idea from Jennifer's channel "How to ADHD". BTW, I am subscribed for quie some time to Cas' channel "Clutterbug". I love her videos, so down to earth, including the bloopers that happen when real life interferes with your decluttering plans.

I remember when we went through 1 piece of paper and you celebrated!!! I thought there is so much more to do before I can celebrate. Studies show the importance of celebrating even small wins, because of what it does to the brain and in the brain. It releases dopamine and also closes a loop so it can begin again. What you did for me was huge, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. God bless you❣❣❣

I remember how much work you did!!!! It's true though... the brain rewards you for those wins! I am so happy that we got to work together. 💜

So many great ideas in this video! I always set the timer and work within that period, and it works WONDERS!! I wanted to add another suggestion about where you can donate the unused/extra cell phones: Domestic Violence Shelters are ALWAYS on the lookout for them, as they don’t have to be subscribed to or supported under a paid plan in order for them to be able to call 911. Many people in dangerous situations could use a cell phone (or even a secondary cell that the abuser doesn’t know about). Thank you for all you do, Norinne! Much love.🩷🩷

Cells phones can often be donated to the Sheriff's department to be used for domestic violence victims.

Hi Norrine! I am so happy to hear that your Dad is doing well! Such a relief for you and the other family members! I truly believe that when a person is ill and has loved ones routing for them it makes a big difference on their recovery! I struggle with organizing my craft room and the basement. My craft room is in the basement but in a bedroom so all MY stuff is contained in this one room! I'm slowly working on decluttering and I have a box next to me that I'm trying to fill up! The basement is a different story but I have made a bit of progress. You could hardly walk in there and now at least you can. Years ago my brother told me if I had multiple things to tackle to start with the hardest and then the rest will seem easy. But I truly get what you said that starting with something easy will make you feel like you've accomplished something! Thank you so much for all the great tips! If you remember years ago..... 2017 maybe......you challenged us to declutter certain areas of our home and to post before and after photos! I did that challenge and I can proudly say I have kept all those spaces neat and tidy! 😍
@TheCraftyOrganizer7 ай бұрын
Your last sentence just made my day!!!! I am so glad that you've kept that space neat!!!! When I am working with a client, we do the hardest area first. But if you are doing it alone - it's just too much as a starting point. I've found more success working with virtual clients if we start small and work our way up. I am so proud of all of the work you've done over the years!!!! And, thank you so much for your thoughts and well wishes for my Dad! 💜

Wonderful tips, much easier to use for an overwhelmed beginner! My husband sometimes finds Dana and Cas difficult to apply, and he can never remember what kind of bug he’s supposed to be. My🦗strategy doesn’t always work for him 🦋 including when to stop or rest! We can probably agree on working through TV show or video though- thank you for this conflict-avoiding idea! Thank you also for mentioning pet hospitals for donating linens- blankets and towels get destroyed or sent home with clients at an alarming rate so they are always needed. So glad your dad is doing better- you have both been in my thoughts! 🩵

My husband is bad with the timer - but GREAT with a TV show! We choose 20 sitcoms - then have him walk around and dedice if he wants to continue or not. Thanks so much for thinking of my Dad! xoxo

Thank you for this. Great tips. The sound kept cutting in & out but I was still able to watch it. Great news about your Dad. x I question I have: I have a box of Disney Christmas ornaments that I haven’t used for years & I want to get rid of them. Everytime I mention it to my sister-in-law she goes on about selling them but I can’t be bothered with that. What do you advise? By the way, you & Cas should do a collab/podcast together. It would be brill.
@TheCraftyOrganizer7 ай бұрын
I'm so frustrated with the sound!!!! I didn't know until it was uploaded. I'll try to get it fixed!!! For your ornaments... I have some people that won't donate anything. They sell all of their unwanted items. Then I have some that donate everything. If you are okay with donating - then, by all means, DO THAT! I have struggled financially most of my life - so I donate things. I do this because of how many times I needed/wanted an item, and how APPRECIATIVE I was when I found it at a thrift store. I want to pass that on to others who may really need/want an item that they couldn't otherwise afford to get. Probably a much longer answer then you wanted! LOL 💜 As for Cas - Doing a collab would be a dream come true!!!!!

What is the best way to store yarn. I have a lot as I do craft shows. I also have many projects started and they are each in bags but I can’t figure out how to store them properly
@TheCraftyOrganizer7 ай бұрын
Honestly - use vacuum stag storage bags. You can organize and sort by color or by type of yarn and those bags will shrink down to half an inch. You can then store them upright on a shelf they stay clean Bug free, moisture free… it’s amazing.
