My parents were pack rats and didn't ever let me put things on the wall or even paint because of "resale value." They also didn't let me shed anything I'd outgrown, so I didn't have enough storage for what I was required to keep in my room. 😅 Still recovering. But I also have a DEEP abiding hatred for both unintentional clutter and unadorned flat white walls. Puts me weirdly within and at odds with both Minimalism and Maximalism. It also makes me *exactly* opposite of the pop-of-color school of boho. But, hey - I guess that's what forces unique design decisions.

I grew up in a lovely home that was clean, neat, and so fraught with anxiety I couldn't move sometimes. When I left home it was several years of going crazy with the messiness before I got to my own style and comfort level. It's better to let kids find their own way in their rooms, at least to a certain extent. Then we know how to care for a place when we grow up.

Yes, real Boho! Just the video I needed! I LOVE Boho and have some great pieces. But I also have Skandi pieces and I love birch wood. Now I have clearer ideas for melding them, and using different appropriate color combos in my bedroom and great room (living room and kitchen).

Yes technically the scandi kind isn’t real bohemian because bohemian style has lots of color and jewel tones, with lots of mosaics and light.

I can’t tell you how much this video helped me to bring together a bunch of different ideas that were in my mind... For years, I tried and failed to give my bedroom a “vacation/escape” feeling. Fast forward, my husband is a 2 time cancer survivor before age 40 and I have a small child. My bedroom theme turned into given-up mom. Then, my father passed away and I am going through his items. In this emotional mess, I watched this video, not sure if it would fit me since I haven’t really been able to travel due to my life taking me on so many other pathways. However, something clicked. My dad was a talented painter and a collector. His collection of old albums, the souvenirs he brought back when he traveled for work, all my sentimental pieces, my rattan hatbox from when I went to Florida, mismatched wood tones could work in boho. I even have an old rug in the basement. My cheap black dresser is getting a DIY makeover and my husband is cutting our old vinyl tufted headboard off and making us a new one out of wood. I am sharing this with you because I am a new subscriber and wanted to say thank you and I wanted to let everyone know the big thing that clicked with me while watching this video is that boho isn’t only for the wanderlust travelers, it is for anyone who wants to tell the story of their life’s journey through objects in their design.

I am an old hippie & have always loved the eclectic boho style of decorating. That said, I have to admit that now that I’ve just turned 70, boho is a lot of work! Lots of dusting all the wonderful things I’ve collected over a lifetime of traveling, lots of ‘things’ to move around. But alas, it’s the time in my life to purge! Sad but true. I’ve got no boho sisters or brothers to pass my treasures onto, no kids, no friends of like decorating style! Poor me.☹️😊 I still love the style, though. And…boho is not for dog lovers! Too much fur to constantly clean off all the beautiful eclectic stuff!😩

The hippies used to say "Express Yourself". That is why the teens like hippie stuff. It isn't boring or like everyone else has. You use what you like and decorate with a sense of self expression. Used items means your copy-cat friend cannot run out and buy identical items. This makes you unique.

I love your channel Nick. I have seen some super busy boho chic designs. But as a “bc” person myself, I find cottage core to throw me back in time to a period I can’t quite pinpoint. I like it, but then I don’t. I always would feel like I’m in a really cute bed and breakfast that I’d be ready to leave after a few days. It gives me Jessica Fletchers house. But I guess some design style is regional. She lived in Maine. However I could see a boho chic living room and a cottage core kitchen in the same home actually. 😳

I have finally defined my style - it's BoHo! Art pieces painted by dad and brother. Beautiful sofas bought 25 years ago with an african print, furniture from mum-in-law. Wicker 50's chairs and cabinets bought at an auction and lovingly restored by yours-truly. Plants-plants-plants! Books-books-books. Special vases and coloured glass pieces. Colour palettes - Apricot and navy blue; dark red and green; lots of wood - old and new. Soothing Duck-egg in the bedroom. Yay! My husband says he loves our home. Everything we have means something and has been loved.

Finally, authentic Bohemian! I’m redecorating my room and looking at KZbin for inspiration, and every girl is like, “EXTREME BoHo MakEoVEr!” And all they did was go to Ikea, and hung some plants and fairy lights. Also, no color, just white walls and pastels. And then they’re like, “My style is BoHo.” Ugh, grinds my gears.

LOL My version of BOHO from the eyes of a 71 year old forever hippie. I have always done my version of boho. Some because when I was first on my own I just had to use whatever I could to make it work. SO over 50+ years and countless moves and life changes my boho has evolved to what it is now. I just feel at home in my space. Many are shocked because I am old and supposed to be grown up. Hahahaha Never going to happen. And after watching the last, to me video of yours, I cracked up because I did make the mistake of buying that marshmellow loveseat. OMG what a mistake. Well last year I took it aart. Removed much of the arm stuffing did some reworking on the frame and stapled it back together. Gained at least 8 more inches space in my room. I had a blast.

The key i’ve found for this style is to really hone in one what YOU like. And then REALLY focus on that...in a style where you can do anything, you still need focus and pieces that relate somehow for a finished cohesive look.

this video had a lot of great insight! I think boho style is more than travel and I am glad that was touched on. travels can be roadtrips or estate sales - you don't need to go to morocco or spend a bunch of money to design boho

Please don’t forget to recommend to shop your local Antique Mall or Antique shops. Big difference between a thrift store, we work hard to have interesting items with a story. Boho, mid century or traditional it’s all there.

Soooo true! I have two booths in stores offering eclectic vintage goodness that makes it a lil easier for shoppers to find awesome stuff without having to travel the world to get it. And because I'm thrifty by nature, my prices are low. Antique shops are amazing stops for BOHO decor. 💕 (I sell live plants, too!) 🌱

Just finding your videos - they are so helpful. I'd point out that the Raj period had it's own Boho moment. Brits were living in India, South Africa, the Bahamas - all over the Empire, and bringing home furnishings, textiles, etc and decorating very English homes with eclectic mixes of interiors.

Nick, I love your style videos. Even though I am not usually drawn to the boho style, I love knowing about it and seeing the great examples you show. Your breakdown of each style is spot on in my estimation. I have been a student of interior design my whole life and I sure wish I could have had you as a teacher! Thanks so much for all the work you put into your videos.

I am very drawn into boho mid century modern interior design but less clutter. I love mixing old (our Vestervig Erickson 1960 dinning chair) & new ( Rh oak dinning table). Mixing different culture like Moroccan Rug, Herman Miller Emma’s Chair, Nepali Thanka Paintings etc. And yes lots of plants. I think It helps to create & bring in your style, heritage & somewhat identity. Even though I love mid century, Scandinavian & Japandi style but I think I will always incorporate boho design to bring some of those element of own style. Loving your content & its helping me create some mood board for the house we will be building.

I moved to a real farmhouse 23 years ago...I have always decorated eclectic in that I am not matchy matchy...love to display things that mean something to me....people have always told me they feel so comfortable in my home (biggest compliment I could ask for!) We have horses so of course we love equestrian decor and Southwest kinda lends itself to adding the boho vibe. I like natural materials, comfort, colorful, vintage, found, etc I think I’m definitely farmhouse boho and I love it. I think depending on the person and their lifestyle....Boho and farmhouse go very well together.....thank you for sharing😊k

I live in Antigua, Guatemala and started collecting huipiles....the old ones and large ceremonial ones 20 years ago. A friend of mine here who IS a Guatemalan had dining room chairs made and ended up not caring for the carving on the bacms so she used huipiles just slipped.over the chair backs which is colorful, artistic looking and isnt as much of a commitment as cutting them up to use as upholstery fabric, which I have also seen done. I love local crafts but also Mexican ones as well having traveled extensively and collected there throughout my life. When I bought my hime here I also bought a new van and traveled throughout Mexico to my favorite crafts spots like Dolores Hidalgo near San Miguel Allende and also Puebla for talavera serving dishes etc. I went to Taxco for silver serving pieces....Michoacan for lacquerware...etc etc and added Guatemalan carved furniture pieces.and other crafts to my mothers antiques and it turned out wonderful. Most of all my home is filled with memories of two lifetimes....my mothers as a US State DEPT employee abroad and mine as a travel lover.

I was in college, in NYC, from ‘73-‘77. We lived boho in the dorm rooms, with lots of macrame, DIY of course, those enormous colorful Indian bedspreads that “created” perfect “walls” between your section of the room and your roommate’s, and an overload of plants, especially pot. My first roommate painted a border near the ceiling of pot plants (talk about getting high…).

What a fun change! I really like seeing ingenious ideas like at 4:07 in which someone created a fake beam look which is fairly easy and solved the no-wiring problem for pendant lamps by hiding the wires in the "beams". Etsy and Amazon make accessories easy for those who can't afford extensive travel. You can also make fun things with 2 bamboo salad bowls screwed together or baskets. I remember doing these inexpensive creative things in my college days and the results really amazed people (in a good way.) However, I learned to pump the brakes on collectibles by asking myself, "Do you want to dust this every few weeks?"

I grew up in a Boho Home, my parents were genuine nomads. It collected so much dust, but I took the love of an indoor jungle with me. My husband is a minimalist and now we have a skandi/japandi style with tons of wicker and plants, but very little decor.

Eagerly waiting for your videos.. I know it takes a long time to edit.. but I am sure you will start getting out two videos in a week very very soon.. may be you could do one normal length video and one 2 minutes video(not sure if it’s doable, but yes I am a little selfish since I will be able to see your video twice a week 😇). And a big hello 👋🏻 to your partner from me 😊.

I love Boho! Nothing stifling, no emphasis on the dreaded neutral colors (which is a sorrowful excuse for a lack of imagination!) and above all else PERSONALITY!!!!!!! Walk into a Boho house and you know who you're dealing with! The same cannot be said for other styles which seem best suited to disguise everything real about the people who exist there.

For real Boho decor, look up ‘Charleston’, the house where Virginia Wolfe and the ‘Bloomsbury Set’ lived and stayed. No wall was left unpainted, floors were painted, cupboards were decoupaged or painted. Beds and chairs and sofas were colourful with eclectic fabrics, shawls and rugs. Absolutely beautiful. And.....I’ve subscribed. 😃👍

I have always loved bohemian! I used to have my whole house in this style, then went through a more minimalist phase for a while as I got older.. Now, I just rediscovered it as Dark Boho ( well, I like Dark Eclectic even more.. Can use a lot of what I already have!!) Dark Boho popped up on my Pinterest, and I am so enthralled! I'm in the midst of doing my dining room- living room space over in Black, grays.. I already have an accent in that room - furniture I've painted sort of a magenta /ruby color, so I'm now looking to use those jewel tones as Accents in there.. it's amazing! thanks for this video!

yes i love simplicity in life and i realized the Boho in me is that kind of mute color , the color palette cream and white or peach is very feminine classic and i also find it very close to Sandi / minimalist but a little busy but not eye soring. The biggest lesson i learned from you is that all and every style re beautiful as long as they are done correctly. Thank you Nick for another great video, nd looking forward to next one. xoxoxo all the way from Toronto
