My husband and I lived in a cape cod style house for almost 20 years. It was built in 1759 in a New England shoreline town. When we moved in, in the 1980s, it still had no closets. Fortunately, a bathroom had been installed in the original birthing room, off the keeping room and a small kitchen had been added to the back. It was a half cape, but with a gambrel roof, center door and chimney and one window on each side. The house was so small that during winter power outages, fires in the three fireplaces could still heat the house. Your presentation does a nice job of showing the range of styles used in current interiors. That house took so much time for my husband to renovate, (20 years) that the next house we bought was a new colonial style.

Hello Kathleen, it was lovely reading the history of your previous home and it sounds very authentic to the style, especially having been built in 1759!! I remember looking at the original floor plans and seeing the keeping room as the central multi-purpose room? Have a beautiful week xx

Hello everyone! I hope you enjoy todays video covering Cape Cod inspired interiors. A larger portion of the video is dedicated to the architectural features of this style, highlighting the evolution of the exterior, and I hope you enjoy learning some of the history :) While there is no 'definitive' guide to decorating Cape Cod interiors, many homes showcase nautical accents, as well as traditional Early American furniture pieces. Let me know in the comments below if you enjoy this style and other styles you would like to see xx

Do a comparison between Cape Cod and Hampton....because those are 2 different styles , 2 different areas and 2 different amounts of wealth . The "Hamptons" are basically the summer beach homes on Long Island, NY of the wealthy NYC people. "Cape Cod" is more historical, older and regular year round homes of people in Massachusetts. Both styles are in the North East coast of the US......then there is the California southwest coast & can't forget the Southern coastal states..all totally different styles. As the country 'grew' it evolved into the "Victorian" housing..those are interesting especially when you see ultra modern furnishings mixed with some antiques

I love Cape Cod style homes as much as I love Cape Cod!! We have a large subdivision of homes that I believe were built for the servicemen returning home from WWII. Most if not all of them are Cape Cod style. They were the most adorable homes when I was growing up. So well cared for and practical for smaller families and couples. I loved driving through that neighborhood. Sadly many are being let go by owners given sub prime mortgages before the last crash. 😢

My kind of decorating English and French country, plus a bit of my own personal style that reflects my INFJ personality as a professional artist i.e. former retired NYC fashion illustrator/floral designer for over 50 years and a pianist/composer that lives on Cape Cod and has for most of my 74 years. Grew up spending summers in my late grandparents and late mother's home, a lovely antique Cape Cod three quarter house built in 1776 that had no doorknobs only black wrought iron latches on the doors, low ceilings and two lovely pretty bedrooms with tiny flower print wallpaper and wrought iron framed beds under the eaves upstairs! HOWEVER later on they added a semi formal dining room with all windows on one side and backdoor and windows on the other side, then theres another living room , bedroom and bathroom after that , then the door to the garage . We used to call the 4 beds the kids zone and ithe other side the parent zone. It was a cool house..

@@parkerposey788 I think you've misunderstood the term 'Nomad' when it comes to decorating styles. It's now a recognised trend, when tastefully done. Nothing to do with trailer homes or tiny homes. oh Suzie, I wish I could afford you to consult. I'm renovating an awful Cape Cod style home, not on the coast, but in Central Tablelands. A lot of what you have suggested in this video I have done naturally. I moved here from coastal Sydney, due to family reasons, and am having to try an upgrade this very out of place Cape Cod style (obviously kit home built in the 80's!!!). My main concern, is whilst I love, and lived the "coastal Hamptons Style" life in Sydney, how do I adapt this to a more country, historic village (Perthville) near Bathurst? I don't want to be kitsch, and try to be coastal in the country. What I'm trying to meld into a style is "Framptry" - French, Hamptons & Country. It's a minefield and a challenge let me tell you!

I’m in the middle of building a small house (750sq). I sent pictures to my children and said look how far I’ve gotten they said it looks like Noah’s ark. After viewing your video it actually looks like a cape. It will be heated by a woodstove. I’m designing a fireplace area with stone where the woodstove may rest. The pipe will go through the wall instead of straight up through the roof. I wasn’t really sure what design I was going for because all of this is just out of my head and not really on paper. Looking at your video makes me realize that what I’m designing is between an English country style and Cape. Did these Cape homes come from the design of English homes?
@suzieandersonhome2 жыл бұрын
Hello! Wow what a fun (& I'm sure challenging at times) project. It sounds very cosy with nice rustic touches. What inspired you to build from scratch? To answer your question this is a nice little summary I found about the design of the original Cape Cods: 'The first Cape Cod style homes were built by Puritan colonists who came to America in the late 17th century. They modeled their homes after the half-timbered houses of their English homeland, but adapted the style to the stormy New England weather.' - Source: ThoughtCo. Hope this helps xx

These interiors are lovely, but many could not physically fit in an actual Cape. FWIW, my sister owned a Cape on Cape Cod built in 1760. Actual Cape style involves wonky but charming wide board floors, a narrow steep stairway, small rooms, and no closets. I love Capes, but they’re not for everyone.

Hello Anne! Thank you for your comment :) Wow, how great to read that your sister owner a cape built in 1760, I can imagine so much history and original details. It is clear to me that the popularity of this style is what led to the many evolutions over time, with additional rooms being added, multiple stories and reworked staircases (as opposed to the original captains stairway). xx
