A step by step tutorial on decreasing brioche stitch patterns - bk3tog and bsk2p
►►► VIEW THE FULL TUTORIAL HERE: nimble-needles.com/stitches/h...
Unlike the increases, the basic brioche stitch decreases have a slant. They are either leaning towards the left or the right. Both are worked across altogether 5 stitches, so, you need to plan your pattern accordingly.
First, the right-leaning decrease. It is often called bk3tog (brioche knit 3 together) or brRsl dec (brioche right-slanting decrease)
Knit up to a position where you would normally k2tog a double stitch. I’m showing you the technique with one color, but it’s exactly the same in two colors. You just need to make sure that the next stitch would be a k2tog (and not a p2tog).
Now, slip the first double stitch as if to knit.
Then, knit one stitch,
and pass the slipped double stitch over the one you just knit
Slip the resulting stitch back to the left needle purlwise,
And pass the double stitch on the left over it.
Slip the remaining stitch to your right needle purlwise and you are done.
The left-leaning decrease is a bit easier. It's often called bsk2p (brioche slip knit 2 pass) or brLsl ec (brioche left-slanting decrease
Knit up to a position where you would normally k2tog to stitches.
Slip the first two stitches knitwise.
Then knit the next three stitches (so a single stitch and a brioche stitch) together.
Now pass the double stitch you slipped before over it. And done.
There are also double increases for the brioche stitch (br4st dec) but I'll show you that in the next video

Thanks for another video! You make it very easy to see what you're doing. At about 3:20 I think you said slip the stitch pw but it looks like kw when you do it. Is it just me? I'm so looking forward to the next video!

U are absolutely right. That's kw. When in doubt, watch what I am doing. These decreases have u saying the same things soooo many times it's so easy to get confused. Especially when u have to think of three things at the same time: knitting (blind), looking at the screen so everything is in focus and talking 🤣

ANY time I need technique help, I find one of your videos! You explain so clearly (and in English, which is not your first language!), that I get it right away. After 60+ years of knitting, I am trying to make Raina Kruus' Chess hat, and felt I was trying to read Welsh. Twenty minutes with your videos, and I feel prepared to tackle it!

Before I start a project in two-coloured brioche with patterning in increases and decreases I first knit a swatch, following your instructions. So I am going back and forth between your two tutorials until I know how to do it. Thank you.

that's a good idea, inge. Brioche can be a bit tricky. Maybe also watch this video where I show how to fix mistakes: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4OwmWupotlssKc

One of my favorite knitting techniques that I would love to learn. It seems like designing your work could be endless, especially choosing colors. I would like to knit beautiful hats and matching scarfs soon. Maybe attempt some sweaters. Can’t wait to start Brioche knitting thanks to your easy to follow tutorials! Thank you Norman!! 🙂🧶

Sweaters in Brioche will be very warm, so that's where you have to be careful. Other than that, it IS an amazing technique. So, feel free to come back in case you are stuck and need help :)

I knit brioche for two colored scarves or hats. My current pattern is fish scales which I set down for a while and now need to remember how to decrease so it looks like the rest of the project 😁 Danke!

make sure to place lifelines. brioche stitches, especially when there are decreases, are quite difficult to fix mistakes.

Thank you Norman! I’m using these techniques to make a pretty displacement pattern on a jumper of my own design. I’ll be putting the progress and finished jumper on ravelry and insta. Did you know that you said “purlwise” instead of “knitwise” at 3:20 in the video? Maybe you can put an annotation into the video in case this confuses people like it confused me for a second. It was ok after you showed it a couple more times and said knitwise, then I got it.

yes, you are right. I have a strong left and right weakness so you will find that sometimes in my videos when I don't catch itduring the editing process. Knitwise is correct. My newer videos all have closed captions where I typically correct that later on. stillt hank you for noticing it!

Hi Norman. Great tutorial as usual, thank you! I have a question: can the decrease in brioche be executed starting with the single stitch instead of the yarn over stitch? All the tutorials show it starting with the yarn over ( double stitch) . Thank you.
@NimbleNeedles
@NimbleNeedles 3 ай бұрын
well, you could do it sure. However, most people will agree that starting like this is the neatest. But think of it like this way: Brioche knitting is a form of double knitting. And the yarn over stitches are the stitches of the front side. if you start with the "single" stitches, then you would be starting decreasing on the back layer. That's a bit weird.
@geo40211
@geo40211 3 ай бұрын
Yes, you are right. I made a mistake, initially didn't want to decrease the sweater I'm working on at the sleeves, now I changed my mind, but on the left side the last 3 stitches of brioche start with the single stitch. There is also an icord edge after, so I don't want to add another stitch which would be visible. I guess I will redo it. Thanks!
