I didn't think to use rubbing alcohol on brushes!! That's a great tip. =) I use it to remove paint from models so I have a bunch of it.

I sort of messed up one of my brush by literally dipping it in a white enamel paint during the building of the glorious kv-2, thank you for your advise and now imma go buy alcohol
@gomezzara6 жыл бұрын
Hey Teri! Alcohol works very well with Synthetic brushes! But i recommend to avoid to use it with brushes with natural hair! It will just damage the hair in the long term. If may i suggest you to use the "Brush cleaner & restorer" of Winston & Newton for natural hair brushes. It works for both type of brushes and doesn't provoke any damage to the hair. And really destroys any residue of acrylic even if the brush has been damaged for years. After used the product, you must use the same soap to clean the brushes and you are ready to go. If you want to go further, there is an a brush repair gel from Greenstuffworld that will help to maintain the tip and the quality of the hair for natural hair brushes. I hope this can help you! Greetings from Chile!

Actually, alcohol is what other artists in different fields use. Makeup artists with more expensive makeup brushes ($80+) sanitize their brushes between clients for hygienic purposes. You just have to conditioner them after. Keep a lookout for the follow-up to this video for details on deep conditioning natural fibers, but I can attest to using this method occasionally on my Winsor Newton S7 brushes for years with no damage and they're still going strong.

also isopropyl alcohol debonds the glue in the ferrule of the brush (metal part) that binds the brush hairs... thanks!

Thanks Terri, I'd never thought of 99% rubbing alcohol before. But for brush soap, I always use the pink brush soap I get at Michael's. It's like $7 for the big bottle 2 or 3 for the small. Both will last literally YEARS. But thanks, and I'll get some 99% alcohol next time I'm at the store.

Hi Teri thanks! I will have to try this on my old brushes. Any advice on fixing or recovering bad/wonky bristles?

I’ve got brush soap somewhere ‘safe’ just as I did with my ball bearings for my posh paints (Scale75/Andrea) but rubbing alcohol? Might prompt me to visit the chemist.

Hey Teri, how would you condition your bushes without buying that soap? I'm worried the alcohol will dry the hair out. Could i just nick our lasses hair conditioner ?
@thatterigirl6 жыл бұрын
That's exactly what you can do - cheap conditioner for natural hair fibers is exactly what helps moisturize bristles.

i always want to try these with some of my more consistent brushes, but will this risk damaging whatever's holding the bristles in place inside the ferrule? also how do you straighten out a brush that's developed a little curl at the tip?
@adamfox16696 жыл бұрын
Sometimes the curl will NEVER come out. You can try when done cleaning it, but still moist/so you can ‘form’ it , lay the curl side against a soft cloth/damp paper towel and it will even out a bit. You must continue with this method for ever as you just switch sides of it developed another curl. I have noticed thru the years ( been painting 25 years) that the better the brushes, the less curl develops. And keeping the little plastic covers some brushes come with also will extend the life of brush
@thatterigirl6 жыл бұрын
Taklon brushes ALWAYS curl. It's the synthetic bristles. Reshaping them had to be done in the molecular level. You can "fix" a mussed natural fibre brush with hair conditioner. Just wet the bristles, take off the excess water, apply the conditioner, shape it and let it dry. Wash the conditioner out before you use it. It helps train the bristles while keeping them in good shape.
@thatterigirl6 жыл бұрын
Also: I'm going to do a brush destruction video so people can see just HOW FAR the ferrule fibers go. It's shocking far, so you rarely have to worry about damaging the glued ends.
@someonenamedwill9754 жыл бұрын
curled brushes can be fixed by boiling hot water dipping the tip in for 5-10 seconds and reshaping them, you are welcome!!
