Cleaning a washing machine without washer cleaning tablets is not impossible with the power of OxiClean lol
But seriously, this is a great trick that I have used to take the smell out of stinky smelly, dirty washers.
It’s disgusting what is lingers beneath the drum of your washer machine.
But with regular washer cleaning with oxiclean on cleaning tabs you can keep that soap scum or mildew or worse mold from continuing to get all over your families clothes. The main secret here is whatever washer cleaner you decide to use be sure to follow the directions and let it soak long enough to be affective.
 if you just turn your machine on and hope for the best, you are kidding yourself. I have taken apart thousands of washers and most of them are not a pretty sight under the drum.
A lot of the time it’s build up of fabric softener, and people neglecting to ever clean their washer.
This video is for older style direct drive washer is or many of the older ones that can fill with water and sit for several hours without automatically draining. If you have a machine that has the pause play button with the six lights. These machines do not like to sit with water in them for very long. I will make a separate video on how to clean those machines soon.

I used 2 gallons of white vinegar, filled the tub with hot water & let it sit for several hours. Follow with a hot wash cycle with detergent. Got rid of the moldy smell completely & hasn't returned yet. Update: The smell has returned... though not as bad as before. Will have to try oxyclean now.

Thank you sooooo much for this. I do seem to need a whole deep clean suddenly (pro tip - do NOT use washing detergent "sheets" - they gum up the washer something fierce...which will now cost me $99 to have Sears come clean since the model manual is not available), but all the guides online said to use like 1/2c of soda or 4c. vinegar, which I did multiple times and which did nothing (my washer worked PERFECTLY before the detergent sheets). I tried a scoop of Oxy with it too and clearly I needed a LOT more of that, plus the long soak is something no article online teaches. Since no YT video shows how to take apart my particular model and they are not similar enough to "wing it" (tried), your video is my next try before the $99 service on Monday... THANK YOU!

Other pro tip, stop using favbric softener. It gums up tha machine and leaves a waxy coating on your clothes and towels that make them feel softer. Because your towels have a waxy coating on them now, they don't dry as well. Your clothes invite dirt to cling to the waxy coating as well. Waste of money and it destroys your machine.

If you want the machine to fill to the brim on its own hold the water level selector over the largest setting once it has began agitating and it’ll continue to fill to the highest safest level and it will auto shut off once it’s reached that point which will be close to the rim but safe enough to still agitate without any spilling over the top.

It depends on what it is that is in the washer. OxiClean dissolves a lot of organic materials, but there are a few that it cannot dissolve. Sometimes the best solution is to see how difficult it is to remove the agitator and inner drum and just clean it. But the OxiClean solution may be a, good one to start with. There’s also some tablets they sell that use a different chemical to break down materials you may want to give those a try as well. You never know until you try with these kind of things. Most of the time it’s dried on left over fabric softener.

Just unplug it. The pump that drains it won't run very well without power. If your machine is a fancy new one that only has buttons to operate it, I would not due this. But the older one with the big knob that clicks are fine because you can manually set it to drain. Honestly, even the new ones should be fine because they are designed to function if there is a power outage while being used.

You may watch a video on how to remove the inner drum. Depending on the type of wash you have, it could be easy or difficult. If it’s easy that is by far the best way to clean a washer, because the black dunk sticks just behind the inner drum and on the plastic of the outer drum. It falls right off when you scrub it or even easier pressure wash it.

Bottom Line - On top loader machines, always leave the LID OPEN in between washings. Period. The moisture cannot dry fast when the lid is closed. That moisture will turn to mold and/or mildew. When you wash your clothes you will be washing them with that mold and/or mildew. The lid most remain open in between use. For that reason, I would never buy a front-loader.
@WasherDryerMoney
@WasherDryerMoney 9 ай бұрын
True some machines have moisture problems, especially front loader washers. They’ve made some improvements to a few that will run a fan to dry them out, but most still recommend you have to leave the door open which is rarely done by the consumer. The bigger problem is fabric softener. It’s designed to not wash out and it sticks to the drums, turning black smelly. An extreme situation that even starts flaking off onto clothes.

Sorry I haven’t made it yet. I probably will in the next few months. Wife got pregnant and life got crazy. The problem is newer washers, like to drain them self automatically as a child safety feature. And sometimes if you unplug them while they’re full of water, it confuses the computer board in the washer. I’m going to do a few experiments to see if I can figure out an easy way to do this. But one thing you could do is follow the instructions from this video until you get to the point of turning the washer off to let it sit and unplug it instead. If it gets confused and starts sending an error code, all you have to do is put the washer in re-calibrate mode and I have a video on that it’s pretty easy.

This approach didn't work for me. I have a top loader GE GTW460 model. I thought I followed your instructions to the tee. At the beginning of your video, I heard you say to pull out the "knob", however that is not an option on my machine. My machine doesn't have pull-out style knobs - they're all twist-style knobs. I kept my machine lid open while my machine filled with hot water. Once the water stopped, I poured in 10 scoops of Oxi clean and I poured one pot full of hot water in my machine. After I poured the pot of hot water in my machine, I let it run for about 5 minutes and then I opened the lid, so the machine would stop, so that the Oxi solution could soak for 6 hours. About an hour later, I looked in my machine and all the water had drained out! If I had closed the lid, my machine would've have continued to run. I paid over $15 for my tub of Oxi and was very disappointed that all the water had drained in under an hour. Any ideas on why this happened? I found the user guide to my machine online (I live in an apartment rental). My machine will "automatically cancel and drain when water is present and the lid is left open for 15 minutes or the unit is left in a paused state for 24 hours with the lid closed". Folks please read your user guide before following the instructions in this YT video to see how your machine functions.

After you fill it with hot water, add OxiClean, which turns into Hydrin peroxide. Then agitate and turn the machine off, and let it sit for at least six hours. For most newer washers, this will not work well because they like to automatically drain after about 30 minutes as a child safety feature. But most older washers that are smelly and dirty this will work on.

Yeah, I mentioned that in the beginning of the video some of the newer washers like to drain them self automatically after a few minutes. One workaround is to unplug the machine after it agitates. The issue with that is sometimes, not very often but sometimes it will make the washer lock up like a cell phone not wanting to do anything. It’s basically because it’s confusing the control board by unplugging it in the middle of a wash cycle. There’s an easy fix if it happens you just re-calibrate the machine. I have a video on that.
