Welcome back to The Wilderness. Jon talks about what it will take to rebuild 2020’s anti-Trump coalition with political analyst Ron Brownstein, political scientist Lynn Vavreck, Democratic strategist Addisu Demissie, Democratic strategist Jen Palmieri, and Democratic strategist Simon Rosenberg. They’ll talk about the risks of a second Trump term and how you can help prevent it. It may be a challenging road ahead, but by taking the time to persuade the persuadables in your life it’s possible to finally break Trump’s stranglehold on our politics.

Crooked believes that we need a better conversation about politics, culture, and the world around us-one that doesn’t just focus on what’s broken, but what we can do to fix it. At a time when it’s increasingly easy to feel cynical or hopeless, former Obama staffers Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, and Tommy Vietor have created a place where people can have sane conversations that inform, entertain, and inspire action. In 2017 they started Crooked with Pod Save America-a no-bullshit conversation about politics. Since then, we continue to add shows, voices, and opportunities for activism, because it’s up to all of us to do our part to build a better world. That’s it. End of mission.

Sorry, this is so long... Some people are just not reachable. An example of that is what a Trump supporting member of my family said during an uncomfortable exchange about Trump/Biden - "I don't care about the facts I believe what I believe". That is what I call willful ignorance which is likely sourced in fear and probably an ego that has too much pride to consider they might be wrong AND that they attach their beliefs to their 'identity'. Who are they without their fears and self-righteousness that forms their opinions? That kind of intense (imbedded) fear and attachment seems to block the ability to reason, to think critically and comprehensively in order to solve issues for the 'common good'. If one's world view is Dog eat dog then that supports a vote for Trump who breeds fear and self- interest which can only eventually lead to the extinction of the human race by killing one another or destroying the planet and making it uninhabitable. If one's world view is based in the understanding that we are interdependent on one another and this planet to survive then that supports a vote for Biden who is moving the country in that direction even though so much more needs to be done...a Democratic administration is infinitely more open to building such a world where we have to build trust with one another etc. Biden and the Democrats are not perfect but, they are OPEN to diversity, equal rights etc. But, when Biden wins we should never take our pressure off of them to improve the lives of everyone and to protect this planet. Lastly, we need to have more emphasis on learning, nurturing and practicing peaceful conflict resolution skills and diplomacy. Rather than building armies to solve conflicts with violence and the never ending wars...which again may lead to our demise with weapons of mass destruction. We are a long way away from PEACE but, our goal MUST BE PEACE and sustaining a decent, safe quality of life where everyone's basic emotional, social and physical needs are met. We will never get there with Trump and Trumpism. Vote blue💙 ☮

He simply doesn't have the support within the government or across the country to do the crazy stuff he'd like to. He doesn't have majority political support or support to destroy the economy or US power and reputation. You're not voting Biden vs concentration camps and deportation of millions by military intervention. You're voting Biden vs extraordinary instability and probable violence. Whether Trump loses after that or in November, the US will flip rather quickly back to relative normalcy. Big picture he's a lineman who would block a train.

The last townhouse is shared by a Transgendered couple & their friend, a Black, Male Librarian with a professional position in a public library. By coincidence, our building should don a Red Badge of Courage & fly a Pride flag at all times. ALL 6 of us fall through the cracks found in most surveys & none of us have ever been polled. THIS is why I agree with the Professional Contrarian who has a great track record. In closing, I look forward to your future episodes. 💙

Looking forward to this season of The Wilderness. Reaching undecided voters and those who need to understand this could be the last time their vote may be cast. We are at risk of our votes not being counted. Even if Biden wins, the attack on access to voting gets worse in each state. Plenty of work to do.

I love how your programming helps me, a Canadian, understand the politics and factors at play south of the border, especially in a time where I have seen more and more mirroring of it up here. What I don't understand is why there seems to be little real motion to change the electoral process there. Anecdotally people seem to hate the electoral college. Despite watching your show so often i still don't fully understand why certain states supersede others in terms of voter importance. Like I vaguely understand needing delegates, etc., but... it honestly seems so arcane and just leads to the result of a predominantly democratic country ending up with republican presidents at a higher rate than seems balanced. Why has more of Biden's effort not been to modernize American elections? Or has it been, and I missed it? Trust, I know Canada's are scarcely any better.

Good observation. One thing that hinders a major change in the voting process,from what I can tell, is that we really need one interest group to hold 2/3 contol in both houses +plus+ the Presidency +plus+ an impartial and fair Supreme Court, all at the same time. Sadly, that is something we have not had in a long time. After that, I believe we need to have the States confirm that change to the Constitution. Whew!
@trevinbeattie4888
@trevinbeattie4888 4 ай бұрын
It all starts from the constitutional convention of 1787, where in order to form an effective federal government the northern anti-slavery states had to make lots of compromises with the southern pro-slavery states in order to get all of the states on board with the new Constitution. For example, the Connecticut Compromise which established a bicameral legislature with the House being weighted by population and the Senate giving equal power to each state, and the 3/5ths Compromise which gave pro-slavery states additional representation for 60% of their slaves. (To clarify: not giving _slaves_ representation, but extra representation for the slave _holders._ ) It continued with the Missouri Compromise which ensured that anty-slavery and pro-slavery states would be added to the union in equal numbers as the U.S. expanded westward so that the pro-slavery states wouldn’t lose power in the Senate. So the consequences of slavery are still firmly entrenched in the very makeup of the U.S., and the bigger it’s grown the more difficult it is to make any meaningful changes to the Constitution in that respect. The last time Congress was able to do so was right after the US Civil War, when former congressmen from the Confederate states were barred from returning to the US Congress.

I know this is just an intro to this series, but you need to talk about how Gaza is affecting gen z and young voters. I've seen an alarming number of people say they won't vote for Biden because of the administration's slow response and continued vocal support of Israel. I'm also disappointed, but I'm afraid these people's absence will hand more votes to Trump.

The sad thing is... gen z saying they won't vote for Biden probs weren't paying attention or were too young to follow politics when trump was in power. I think a lot of them have zero idea what trump is capable of.

As a boomer, I care a great deal! And I’ve been dragging my children to the Iowa caucuses since they were grade school age, even though we’re in a solidly red state! I have friends older than me who are also concerned and involved! Please don’t tar all of us with the same brush. The electoral college very much skews the outcome!

@@debrakron9049 Relax boomer. I'm referring to the older folks that put Trump in office and will choose to do it again because they hate democrats, and count on the young liberals not to vote again. Iowa was a Trump state both times he ran because the popular vote doesn't count no matter how many kiddies you drag to the polls. Our best hope is that women in crucial states take a stand against Christian nationalist strongholds like Iowa.

This is so hard and overwhelming, to be honest. I mean, politics is a traditional "no -no" conversation. I only talk politics with people I already know feel as I do. I just cannot even imagine starting a conversation about politics with someone I know but whose politics are likely different from mine. Way to make an enemy out of a neighbor or acquaintance, or worse yet, a family member. And my friends, and maybe this is the problem in America, e.g., not just neighbors or acquaintances, but friends, all vote the way I do. So, who am I supposed to be talking to about voting???

I tell people to make sure they’re registered to vote, and that their voter registration is up to date. A LOT of states are brutally culling their voter rolls. I’ve been able to start discussions about _why_ voter rolls are being purged - that Republicans are deliberately trying to make it difficult to vote. Most people believe that voting is important. People are often very surprised to learn that one party is deliberately trying to create LOW voter turnout.

You need to learn THEIR reasons stated and revealed motivating their choice. RFK has a lot of bad (and often non serious) policy views you can research once you understand why they want to vote rfk. The second piece,IMHO, is to persuade them that voting while important is just part of change, organizing outside of elections to help influence parties is key. There is also tons of history and arguments to push back against sending a signal through 3rd party voting.

My problem is and I hope I am alone in this is I have zero patience for anyone who isn’t 100% against trump. I cannot hold a rational discussion with people so devoid of knowledge or who support or could support a person so devoid of basic decency. I feel I best can help by not screaming at undecided voters and persuadable republicans that the existence of democracy is on the line. I have studied too much history to think it couldn’t happen here.
