My tomatoes have the blight because of too much rain. I was able to removed the disease leaves early on so it slowed down the infection. The fruits started ripening but I am not going to have an abundant harvest because of the wet weather we are having. Your suggestion to removed the disease leaves was spot on. Thanks.

One thing I found that kills the fungus in the soil is simple, cheap and non-toxic, “Cornmeal”. I live in the northwest and I put in a raised bed. When I planted tomato starts as well as other types of plants they would die within a few days. I researched it and found that there was a fungus in the soil, so I looked for something to treat it with, but I was told that it would have to run it’s course and may take about 3 years. I found something on the internet that said cornmeal would take care of it. So I mixed some into the soil and didn’t have a problem after that with blight or black spot. I also had a severe problem with powdery mildew and black spot on my roses. I mixed it into the soil around the base of the roses and didn’t have a problem after that.

I heard cornmeal was also good to spread on top of the soil to prevent (weed) seeds from germinating. I have several pounds of it that came from a cattle feed yard (on the floor/dirty), but I haven't tried it yet.

@@pentatonic7833 When I use it for my plants I sprinkle it around the plant and work it into the soil with my fingers. If you’re applying to your soil, just put a dusting on it before you till it. Just enough to lightly cover the ground. Too much won’t hurt it because it also acts as a fertilizer.

Best way I’ve found to water tomatoes is cut the bottom out of a plastic pop bottle, remove the cap, and jam the neck into the soil by the base of the plant. Fill the bottle with water. If the soil is muddy and jams full the neck of the bottle, it will take maybe an hour for the water to drain out which I think is ideal. Do not wet the leaves if possible You can also wet sheets of newspaper and put them around the base of the plant to keep soil from splashing up and infecting the leaves during rainfall. You can use landscape cloth spikes to hold them down As the plant grows, I cut the leaves off the bottom 1/2 of the plant

I am growing WVU's septoria leaf spot and light blight resistant tomato cultivars Mountaineer Pride (a slicer) and Mountaineer Delight (a beefsteak) this year. They were developed by professors Mannon Gallegly and Mafuz Rahman just recently. So far, in north central West Virginia's humid summer, they are doing very well, carrying a full load of leaves and fruit. I gently pruned the plants, applied a mulch and staked them. The seed can be purchased at Southern Exposure Seed Exchange.

Always fight the blight in The Smoky Mountains and glad to find your information. I came across an article from Univ of R I suggesting aspirin in the planting hole. I have done this for 10 years after my first encounter with late blight and total loss of the crop. I don’t know if it helps but I see the different tomato diseases needing an all out approach from leaf picking, plant spacing of 54”, cages, and fungicide application on a regular basis. I will add need oil and copper sulfate to my Arsenal. Thank you. Cant wait to see what you suggest for late blight prevention. Oh, I also take all tomato plant residue to a remote spot and keep it our of the compost .

Not one person talked about aspirin 325 mg non coated use 2 crushed up into a powder and a gallon of water. Stir i and mix it in a little warm water first. When I planted my tomatoes in my 5 gallon self watering system. I just watered the top of the soil so the aspirin water can get to the roots. Never had a problem. On the tomato leaves just use on 325 mg aspirin in a gallon and spray it on the leaves. Not on the middle of the day in sunshine. The I add calcium pellets to the soil as well when planting and this will take care of blossom end rot on type tomatoes. Good luck

It varies, but you also have to take the spray pump into consideration., ie, it's life usage. Sounds strange, I know, but strong concentrations will effect if it works properly or not. Most manufacturers of the oil or metal will give guidelines on mixtures. I'd advise trying them separately, before combining and, even then, only in small amounts. It's trial and error, basically, as no two pumps are alike and no two compositions are alike. Good luck!

It's crazy, I moved from N Florida to Southern Kansas, and my tomatoes act completely different here. I never fought against blight like I do here, and it's constant. My girlfriend here was adamant about planting 3 Better Boys in a tote (holes drilled for drainage). I told her they will not do well that close together. They are my best producers. I'm confoozed! Just a little leave curl was all. But my other potted cherry tomatoes and Beefsteaks, I'm in a nonstop battle with fungus. I have sprinkled baking soda in the pot soil, sprayed calcium with a Lil vinegar on the leaves, then next week used fungicide. But, it's the first I ever potted tomatoes. Next year, I will plant in raised compost because the soil is poor here without lots of work. The rains here are different than Florida, and I think my problem to readjust. I'm ready for next year ;). My potted soil was a mixture of black cow (prefer black hen), potting soil, humus, spagma, and some sterile compost.

I have had a good season so far with blight only showing up on one tomato plant out of 10. Having them planted in individual containers is a big help in battling blight. After trying everything from 3% hydrogen peroxide to various blends suggested online, I finally found a way to almost stop the blight without having to treat that plant every couple of days. I decided to finally try some copper octanoate (Dr. Doom) fungicide. It just worked and it keeps on working...I did a spray of the top of the soil in the container and all of the plant, including a good drench of the stems and branches...
