I’ve been watching the UV index instead of the temperature and where I am it’s mostly in the 6-8 range. Every so often a day that’ll be 9 or 10. My tomatoes are still small since our season starts later than you. We were getting cold nights until a month ago. Do I need shade cloth yet? Or when I have more consistent days of above 8?

Thanks! Another thing you can do is grow large sunflowers around the tomato plants to give a little bit of relief from the sun. I am doing that currently in my garden and you can use them as a natural trellis as well. To those of you out there struggling with growing food, don’t give up! Keep at it, we all have failures and it doesn’t mean you can’t grow things. 💚 Happy gardening!

Tomatoes loathe full sun. They're a part-shade species. They can take it in the spring when the days are shorter and sun is weaker, but in summer, even in northern latitudes, it's often too much. It's even worse at high altitudes where the air is thinner.

We are currently going through a bad heat wave of 100+ temps and yesterday it was about 113! The other 2 plants look fine. I'll keep an eye on this plant and see what happens. I guess I can move it to partial shade, but for the experiment's sake, I'll keep watering it and see if it makes it. I could also put up a shade cloth. I'll see how the next few days go.

Oh, now I am confused. We have had lots and lots of rain lately, with many cloudy days. My tomato leaves started curling. I did some research online, and most places said the leaves will curl with too much rain, but when the plants dry out, the leaves will uncurl! We have not had a lot of hot sun here, so I don't think they are curling because of that, so maybe there are more reasons for them to curl than you stated? I was happy to learn that they would uncurl when dried out, but now I'm wondering. Very confusing.

Very good description of tomato leaf curl. However too much sun is only one problem. I experienced serious tlc after using Black Cow in my tomato bed. The most likely cause was that the manure came from grass fed cows in a pasture treated with weed killer. The next year I planted tomatoes in the same spot but removed most of the soil and replaced with compost and I again have beautiful tomatoes.

People sometimes mistake herbicide drift damage with leaf curl as well. If the leaves and stems start growing in curly shapes, this is most likely herbicide damage. It usually does not kill the tomato plant but stunts it and may delay it from setting fruit. There are some commonly used lawn weed killers that are quite prone to drift and tomatoes are very sensitive to these chemicals.
@donhorak94176 ай бұрын
People shouldn't be using those chemicals on windy days.
@joeellerbach20956 ай бұрын
@@donhorak9417 I agree. However, wind is not the only culprit that causes these herbicides to drift. There are conditions that cause the vapor to hang in the air and drift up to a mile even without much wind.
@jeh19555 ай бұрын
I can attest to what herbicides can do to tomatoes, peppers, cukes, squash, and cantaloupes. A field near my garden was sprayed with herbicides on a windy day this spring. It raven settled into the soil as my re-plats suffered the same fate. The third plantings are doing well however.

Interestingly enough, this plant that the top foliage started curling was the only Roma tomato plant & determinate plant. It wasn't even the tallest plant. But all my other plants are inderminate plants (big boys, better boys & beefsteak) and look great, heck, the beefsteak variety is up to my belly button high & I'm 5'10" 😄. So I wonder if there's a tolerance difference between the determinate and inderminate plants? 🤔 🤷

Excess sun makes them curl, but so does too much temp range from night to day. If it drops from 30oC to 5oC in my polytunnel in the UK in spring the leaves will curl 100% of the time. It can be long before we get long days or clear skies here, so it is not excess sunlight in these cases. It happened this year in a very murky May when we had a couple of cold nights.

I prune my tomatoes as little as possible. This recent internet fad of hacking plants to pieces makes it worse. Having dense foliage is important to not only protect the leaves themselves from the sun, but to prevent damage to the fruit from sun scald and insects finding the fruit. More leaves is good for the plant.
