Even though I'm still terrified of public speaking, lots of practice along with cue cards made me better and better at public speaking and my notes on cards got shorter and shorter

I’ve got to give the best man speech in September and what’s giving me even more anxiety is that I have a stammer - my plan is to include it in a joke at the outset along the lines of ‘I appreciate the groom asking his best friend who has a stammer to be the best man , and I’m hoping to have this wrapped up before the next wedding they have scheduled here’

Hey man that sounds like an awesome way to start your speech. Go for it!

Just coming back to this. I tweaked it slightly but the speech went great and guests came up to me after and said they wouldn’t have even thought I had a stammer had I not mentioned it at the outset. Practice it like crazy and you’ll be fine.

I am going for the speech without outlines or written down. I must say that I am used to speaking in front of folks but I have been practicing for a few weeks with 9 days to go and the speech is such that if I miss something, it will not take anything away from the speech as long as I have the intro, the middle and the end of speech on point. Great advice and one that I struggled with for a few weeks before going on not reading or having an outline.

I like the memorize and talk method. I try not to "Joke Link" but have the topics firmly timelined but I do much better when I can look at the audience directly and let loose. As I get older it is harder but I make sure I am cofortable with what I am saying prior. The longest one of these type of speeches I gave was for my mums funeral [40mins] but I was so glad I did it that way because I could smile an make a tough situation a bit more relaxed and calm. Appreciate you kind and helpful words here. Brotherly love from Australia..

Thank You for the Great advice!!! My son's wedding is in 3 and a half weeks. I'm freaking out a bit. I've got the Blessing of the Wedding Dinner and the Father of the Groom Toast. I'll be Sweating Bullets like Dave Mustaine! 😂

Thank you so much sir, I feel you got everything about right. I have a A4 sheet, I am planning to get a more solid base or something to avoid some possible nervious movement at the beginning of the speech.
