I was taught that trick in the 1960s, but using a hatchet or hand axe. The same type of approach used for making shake-type shingles by hand. The Wonder Bar method is a lot safer and it's something that you'll want in doing demo work much more than an old-school hatchet.

It jumped out for me. It's obvious that the cable was severely pinched by the staple. I shifted to plastic staples years ago for that reason.

My house was built 6 years ago. Builder used finger joint studs everywhere. I thought they were just a way to use up scrap pieces of 2 by. Actually my walls are straight and plum! The short lengths don’t bow as much as a normal stud. Im very happy with the results.

Same with me. Used those studs and have a straight square house. Also used the wood I beam floor joists for a great flat floor. They didn’t have to plane the joists like on here. And I love this channel. A great family, great tips and I like it

I owned a house in Vancouver WA. built in 1995, the attic was full of finger joint 2xs, sold it to my daughter in 2000, she still lives there, very sturdy.

Our old house was built in 1956 and in one wall I found 24 empty Rainer Beer bottles. In another wall was about 20 empty tins of Copenhagen.

when you shook that wall board it reminded me of my now wifes house. It was modular, 60 ft long and there were 4 boards holding up the porch roof .. the one in the middle could move in circles at the bottom ... i added about 14 supports and jacked and rested and attached both top and bottom ...its load bearing now!

Love that board splitting trick, I've had a couple studs remaining that I have been dreading removing due to multiple wires going through them. That trick helped me get them out a lot quicker than my previous plan

I suggest you create a groove in the concrete towards that pocket that needed insulation and bring all the wires and water up into the attic space and direct them where they need to be

Retired contractor.. Finger Jointed Stud were used for vertical runs only. Lots of builds used them in 70's and 80's.

I learn something every time I watch this channel, and it's so positive that I like to watch it on Sunday nights to reduce the Sunday Scaries as I head back to work. I recently tackled a room renovation with new lights, electrical, and a ceiling fan. This channel helped set up my attitude to get this done, and I couldn't be happier with how it turned out! One of the things I ran into was blown cellulose insulation. I see your kids have it in their place, too! I didn't know that was a thing. It's SOOO much better to work with than fiberglass!

That wall reminds me of MY kitchen remodel! But I opened the wall and found they had cheated in both water supply and 4" drains! Rather than fir out the wall to make room for the 4" drains, they just shaved the drywall down to 1/8-1/4" to make it fit. Plus, I knew that it was partially load bearing (and got a 4x12 Doug Fir header). So a lot more work than I planned.

My house was a new build when I bought it in 2008. My pipes burst during the '21 winter freeze here in Houston. I found out then how shoddy the build was. I have basic DIY skills but wish I had your knowledge and skills!!

just a suggestion for that magnet. glue a small piece of thin felt to it. I find that it leaves little black streaks on the wall as it hits a screw and pulls it in tight to the drywall. or even wrap it in painters tape will help

Was doing a bathroom remodel and during demo found incoming plumbing, electrical, and electrical panel on other side of bathroom wall with the hvac and that disconnect also on same wall as electrical panel. Always find surprises in a remodel, and no 2 jobs ever the same……not even remotely close ✌🏻

I’ve seen several issues with family “custom cabinet fridges” that in short order required additional cost to fit a different unit or else required downsizing. Maybe leave room around the new fridge inset in case that unit dies and a potentially larger unit could fit, basically, frame a larger void then fill the surround with panel and trim.

Your comment is very valid but it looks like the fridge they have is 36" most aren't wider than that. What you do have to watch for is how the doors open. I have a counter depth fridge but because of the thickness of the doors, I have to leave a 3" gap on each side to allow the doors to open.

Woka woka woka. Build the cabinets with a space/pocket across the back. Put french cleats across the wall, high and low, so you can screw them to the studs. Then put the apposing french cleats on the back of the cabinet. That way you can hang the cabinets, attach the different cabinets together, adjust them side to side to right where you want them. Then nail or screw along one of the french cleats in each cabinet to lock them into place. Then it is just a matter of trimming the edges like you always do to hide the gap between the cabinets and the wall.

The magnet trick is great. One thing to remember is that they may have run furring strips across the joists, which would cause the magnet to report the wrong direction. As you said, always visually confirm the framing direction.

Got lucky on a house fire. At 21:50 the wire and stud were burned by a hot short by the metal staple on the Romex. The removed partition walls were not load walls, but those partition walls do look like brace walls that add storm wind resistance to the exterior walls. IRC Section R602.10

My wife and I enjoy watching all your videos. In the drawing for Rad and Summer's new kitchen there may be a problem with the refrigerator placement. Our refrigerator looks like the frig in the drawing. If it is the same refrigerator, one of the drawers that spans the full width of the refrigerator requires both doors to fully open greater than 90 degrees or the drawer will not be able to be pulled out. Our frig has to be pulled out about a foot to allow both doors open 180 degrees each. Otherwise the doors only open about 90 degrees and the full width drawer cannot be pulled open.

@23:23 welcome to Milwaukee fuel get the M12 installation driver and in m12 series use the 5.0 batteries. For M18 the CP 3.0 is my favorite battery. The sawzall is badass though. The forge batteries are huge and heavy if you're using something like the sawzall or a drill. Forge batteries for the 7 1/4" saw since you don't have to hold it up in the air.

Those finger joint studs hit the DFW area in the mud nineties I used them once got em from Payless cashway framed a 20 # 20 room addition we didn't fire block or sheath the walls stood em up and went home the next morning we drove up and I don't think I've ever been so embarrassed they all were bending in the middle we had to beat our fire blocking in it was a pain in our ass . Sam my sales guy got a ear full yeah they didn't last long they were half the price and supposed to be stronger than regular two bye fours 😊 live and learn right but y'all running into all that plumbing is absolutely the way it goes thanks for sharing guys

When I have to cut a long cut on drywall, I use the Dewalt DCS571 4 1/2 inch 20V circular saw. The vacuum connects to the saw and it does a quicker job than the multitool.
