How to design a Scrambler motorcycle

A short video here explaining how to design a cafe racer bike for yourself. Introducing you to the basics you need to look for as well as some inspiration on what parts to change to get your own custom look.
Here we start off with a standard Kawasaki KZ650, change the front forks, wheel, handlebars, then replacing the tank, changing the seat to a scrambler / brat style seat, then replacing the rear wheel and shocks.

great video. Just one small point for function, might want to pop a rear fender on and raise (and extend) the front fender a bit. off-roading = mud/water flinging about and people have reported (on rare occasion ) gravel or rocks sticking in the stubbies and smacking against the tire huggers.

I always thought the Street Tracker look in Japan is cooler than straight up Cafe or Scrambler. Kinda best of both worlds. SR400/500s, Kawasaki Ws, Honda Clubman among many great basis.

When the 750 Honda's first came out some deranged friends turned one into an extremely physco four banger dirt bike . Longer swingarm +3" / 4 to 1 header meg . Motocrosser forks and trees , Yokohama 450 x 18 super digger and a 400 x19 trials on front . VERY SCARY RIDE !!!!

I built a flat track replica years before they were fashionable from a suzuki gt250 X7 the tank was from a Suzuki ts100 the seat base and side panels were made from a n aluminium sign mudgards were cut down the exhausted were cut and rewelded at a much steeper angle the headlight was smaller and I found a rear rubber tail light and number plait holder for an enduro bike. The oil pump was removed and blanked off and a smaller seat was made it was painted with a blue fraim and yellow tank. When I got her back on the road I was pestered rotten by peaple wanting to buy her it was mad.

I feel like it's gotta be easier starting with a dirt platform and 'softening' it up than the opposite. Requires far fewer modifications on a good dual sport overall just seat, tank, and wheels?

What you’ll find it the frame on a dirt platform will seriously restrict your shape and lines, also most dirt platform bikes are single cylinder lightweight so you don’t have that engine config either.

Now there's a challenge. Most hardcore bobber builders get rid of their rear shocks, but I've seen a few that are built into the upper bar going back into the frame.

Go for it, the bmw r80 is an incredibly powerful bike, even in its standard form, many years ago, i had one, that i built as a kind of replica ww2 bmw r75 type, it had the leading link forks, a russian 1970s dnepr headlamp, with the speedo and ignition built in, i built a rear hardtail subframe, rolled steel mudguards, short minimally baffled megaphone pipes,

dreegez I just picked it up ten mins ago. No battery, the key switch needs to be replaced and the tank has a really small hole in it. I don't know too much about bike so I'm having a friend look at it. It's on my instagram @ag_builds

I'll follow you on Instagram. The key can easily be bypassed at this stage, a couple of wires, jump it off your car battery and get a fuel pouch from Amazon and you'll be on your way.

No videos as of yet as I tend to use mechanical speedos, but you can get an analogue - digital converter for a lot of digital dials, Dime City Cycles do a lot.

Do you guys think that the fork and exhaust matter? I was thinking of building a scrambler/cafe racer from the mash seventy five, and I don't really have the money to change them. I thought about putting that cloth tape over the exhaust to make it black.

I guess the only thing with a scrambler exhaust is for practicality it should go along the top of the bike rather than below for off roading, but do whatever you feel is simpler and cheaper / easier for you.

It's a bar, not clip ons, and I guess it's neither here or there as to be a cafe racer it would have to have rear sets and a cowl, I'd say this is closer to being a brat bike to a cafe racer

Wouldn't the best and cheapest way to make a retro looking scrambler be starting with an already off-road bike? All you need to change is remove all the plastic and replace mudguards, tank, seat and headlight.

That’s definitely an option and a good idea. There is obviously a different style to that having the long travel forks etc compared to this street scrambler style. I guess another thing we have to think about in the uk is new electrics and registration for road unless we use an enduro donor. Mainly the reason of me using this bike was to show how you could style it differently to a cafe racer using a similar bike as the precious video.

To be honest I don't know the exact source for this bike. The shocks I know are from Triumph.

If you were to go about a build of your own you would have to source everything from different places / suppliers. There's not 1 place I get stuff from, and everything is different depending on the spec of that bike.

Thanks, to resolve you'd just mount the exhaust on the other side. I'm used to the exhaust being on that side on an MX bike as my Maico is left kick start so when I designed it I only realised after I published it.

You would have to swap with pods and if you have decent pods then it'll last and will be easier to set up your bike after.

I was a bit cruel about mentioning the Triumph ones as you're right, it's pretty much impossible to buy them at a decent price anyway. But if you find a superbike going for scrap then you'd be able to use them off those if they've not been in a collision.
