This is what I learned from watching these videos obsessively: 1. Best to spray the nest at night when they are "dormant." 2. Soapy water works great because it does not allow the wasps to breathe, but it takes about 2-5 minutes to kill them 3. You can never "out run" wasps or stinging insects 4. Wasps can re-sting as many times as they want 5. Some species will aim venom at your eyes, which means you should cover them too 6. The workers who are flying back to the nest won't usually sting you. But the "nest guards" will. 7. Even a small nest can be very dangerous in proximity to allergic people, pets or kids 8. Trying to "relocate" a wasp nest is very dangerous and is rarely justified 9. Insecticides work fine. But so does soapy water or WD40. Sanjosemike (no longer in CA)

@NathanVeenstra

Exactly@@yearginclarke. These Polistes Dominula are so friendly that there's even no reason to destroy them. You could walk past their nests without being harrassed by them, you could even just stand a few inches from their nest without them even being bothered. It's actually insane how people are scared of these little creatures which are very useful in decreasing the chances of you getting stung, namely by mosquitoes, which they kill and feed to their larvas. We currently have a hornets nest in our back yard and we have experienced absolutely no danger or agression.

I tend to leave wildlife alone, but a lone wasp set up shop right outside my garage door and I'm certain that would have been a problem once her offspring started to help. I pulled up with my car and cracked the window enough stick the nozzle out and sprayed her nest down with soap and water. She fled immediately and I closed the cracked window just in case. She came back a few times and I sprayed at her each time. I don't know if she's dying, but it looks like she's leaving the site alone either way. Thanks for the video. Helpful AND funny.

I just knocked down to wasp nest over underneath my neighbor's carport today. The only problem with that is they all came back and I think they're building another Nest there. I'll talk to my neighbor and ask if he wants me to spray some say cypermethrin maybe mixed with soapy water at least it'll stop them from coming back in that area and if they do they'll die. I will use a pump sprayer set on streem so I can stand back a good 15 feet. I am almost positive that will do the trick because obviously knocking The Nest down didn't discourage them from coming back.

I’m in the process of destroying a nest at the moment. Bastard thing is the size of a large watermelon nd woven into the branches of a shrub so my plan to sneak up on it at night, scoop it into a bin liner and leave it on my neighbour’s doorstep ain’t going to work. Instead I’ve already blown it open with two thunderflashes (fireworks) and tomorrow I’m going to hit it with a high power hose. I’ll be firing from within the house with the window cracked open just enough. What could possibly go wrong?

I like to use a pump up sprayer from the hardware store. I fill it with about 2 gallons of water with about a cup or two of dish soap (dawn, ajax, or equivalent generic brand) dissolved in it. I can set it to spray in a jet and stand about 20 feet away from a nest. I just keep spraying a steady jet until they start to fall off and die. That’s all it takes. I can get a pint of dish soap at the dollar tree, and it is non-toxic. Raid, on the other hand, is about 5 to 10 bucks a can, and I have a toddler who likes to play outside. Raid is also VERY toxic to cats.

First, you should determine whether there's actual danger, because this is a nest of the polistes dominula, the European paper wasp in English. They are harmless and won't annoy you because they are not the kind of wasps that will be searching for sugar in the late summer. So there was absolutely no need to destroy these wasps, which you could live literally next to without anyone getting in any kind of danger. These wasps won't sting as quickly as the common wasp or the German wasp. Secondly, people should know that wasps just don't sting that quickly if you just leave them alone. If you aren't of threat to them, there's no need for them to waste energy in defending themselves. And they're more useful than you think because they kill mosquitoes, which will actually sting you and are more annoying than any wasp will ever be.

Does anyone know if this method immediately keeps them from flying? I want to try it and get rid of the wasp that’s been haunting my apartment, but I’m deathly afraid of it when it flies. When it can’t fly, I’m perfectly okay with smashing it with a shoe. It’s just a matter of… getting rid of that pesky ability to fly.
@NathanVeenstra
@NathanVeenstra Жыл бұрын
Well, you may want to reconsider because: A) not every wasp is the same, the European paper wasps in this video are actually harmless and should not have been killed; B) wasps are very useful as they kill the mosquitoes that are 1000% more likely to actually sting you than any wasp is. People should definitely be better informed about nature, and wasps in particular. See I don't blame the hornet that stung me last month as she did not attack me, but was probably frightened because she somehow ended up under my shirt. Also, even though the sting caused some pain for a few hours (we're not sissies, are we?), it didn't itch all day for several days like mosquito stings do. Don't kill wasps, be more informed and appreciate them for their part in the ecological system.
@itskitt3237
@itskitt3237 Жыл бұрын
@@NathanVeenstra I know that they provide benefits, which is why I don’t kill them when they are outside unless necessary. When they’re inside my home, however, is a different story. Inside, not only am I personally afraid of them but my cats will go after them which, if it is a wasp that stings, puts them at risk. Additionally, my window does not open meaning that I can’t simply let it back outside. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not going outside and killing whatever I can see. I’m getting those that invade my own space out. Also, inside my apartment, the wasp will simply die anyway whether it be from starvation, dehydration, or a solid swat from a cat, and inside my apartment it isn’t serving any purpose. As stated before, I cannot just let it back out as my window doesn’t open and if I opened my door I would only be inviting more in as they live somewhere around the entrance of my apartment, which would result in more of them dying. While I agree that people should be better informed about nature, you also need to recognize that different people have different situations. Some people have kids who are put at risk by the presence of wasp nests, some people are deathly allergic, and some people like myself only want to kill them when they get inside. My question for you is this; Why in the world are you watching videos about how to safely kill wasps if your stance is to not kill them? It seems to me like you might have come here just to cause problems in the comment section.

Good video. I want to make a suggestion to you, though, in just 2 words:Bee Suit! They help cut way down on the chances of getting stung, should an errant wasp land on you, & try to sting you. A bee suit is good for bees, bumblebees, wasps, hornets & yellow jackets. Happy hunting!

@@bwhite661 Male paper wasps have antennas that curl at the ends and bright colored faces and different eye colors than females. But nothing wrong with not knowing, I never knew anything about them until doing some research after having nests every year on my porch.
