Bald-faced hornets are large and aggressive wasps with a wide distribution throughout the US. Like other wasps, these pests have smooth stingers which they can use to repeatedly sting anything they deem a threat, likely just for wandering too close to their nests. When a colony of bald-faced wasps establishes a nest on to or close to your home, they pose a safety risk to you, your family, and your pets.
Depending on where in the US you live, bald-faced hornets may go by another name like the white-faced hornet, bald hornet, blackjacket, white-tailed hornet, spruce wasp, or bull hornet.
Unlike other wasps and other species, which are typically black and yellow, bald-faced hornets have black and white colorings. They grow to a larger size than most yellowjackets, with the workers growing up to 15 to 20 mm or longer.
Bald-faced hornets will establish nests at least 3 feet off the ground. They can build nests in tree hollows or branches, shrubs, roof overhangs on sheds or houses, utility poles, underneath eaves or soffits, and against man-made structures like chimneys. The nests tend to be round, enclosed structures with a single opening near the bottom.
To get rid of bald-faced hornets on your property, you’ll use a combination of insecticides like Stryker Wasp and Hornet Killer, D-Fense Dust, and Sylo Insecticide. Stryker Wasp and Hornet Killer will knock down bald-faced hornets quickly, D-Fense Dust will treat and kill them as they leave and enter the nest, and Sylo will protect the surfaces of your structures from further pest activity.
Stryker Wasp and Hornet Killer is an aerosol spray made with prallethrin that delivers a quick knockdown to bald-faced hornets & their nests, and it has a long reach of up to 20ft. Simply shake, point, and apply the product to the nest. Spray until the nest is thoroughly wet, and make sure any pests attempting to escape make contact with the spray. Though the spray can reach up to 20 feet, it is best to spray from 6 to 15 feet away from the nest for accuracy. We recommend you wait until evening or night to treat a nest, since wasps will be resting inside their nest during that time.
D-Fense Dust is a dry insecticidal dust made with deltamethrin that will treat bald-faced hornets as they attempt to enter and exit their nest. For nests established inside of structures, use a handheld duster to apply D-Fense Dust directly into the void or nest opening. Be sure to cover the entire perimeter of the opening as you apply the product at the labeled rate of 0.5 pounds per 1,000 square feet of treatment area. Do not treat overhanging nests.
After you’ve treated the nests around your property, you’ll make a barrier treatment with Sylo Insecticide to prevent any bald-faced hornets from re-infesting your structures. Spray a 0.1% emulsion of Sylo. You can do this easily by mixing half an ounce of Sylo with one gallon of water. We recommend you use a hand pump sprayer since you’ll be spraying around the perimeter of your structures.
Once your solution is mixed, apply Sylo around the exterior of your home and other structures. Treat along spots where bald-faced hornets would build nests like along eaves, underneath porch ceilings, and around voids into the structure. This will leave a residual application that will help prevent wasps from re-establishing nests for up to 90 days.

That Striker spray is $18 for 15oz can with .01% Prallethrin Black Flag Wasp & Hornet Killer is less then $5 for 14oz can, with .02% Prallethrin. I went with the $5 stuff and ran like hell after spraying each application a few times thruout the day.

I open a can of white meat chicken and stir in a tube of Frontline for cats or dogs. I place the can in a cage made from chicken wire or something similar. Then, I place the cage near the nest (in the evening). The hornets (works for yellow jackets as well) will go for the meat and bring it back to the nests to feed the larvae. The Frontline will spread throughout the nest the way it spreads on pets, and usually within 48 hours, the entire nest is dead.

Thank you for sharing what you did here. I just did this this morning before I left for work and it seems that most of the nest in our tree close to our house is already dead. I really didn’t want to have to spray/deal with possibly getting stung and this was a very affordable solution for my family.

@deanevangelista6359 I have a hornets nest is in my van about after about 2 week of not driving it. I had this couple years ago and they build a nest deep in the hinge part of the door jam through shrunken rubber seal all around the doors. They have completely taken over the entire van including the engine compartment. I want to use your method. I'm debating between trying to put it just inside the van through the side door in the evening vs just under one side of the van which might be safer to place. Do you think they will find it under the van? Also you said about 48 hrs to work. Is that from the time you first put it out or after they find it and really get into it? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

How do these react when you do the bag trick? Does it keep them away or make them want to gentrify my garage? (Bag trick is where you take a small brown paper bag, stuff it w plastic bags a bit of gravel for weight and make it look like a nest ) Its supposed to deter wasps and other bees apparently. Juat dknt know how each type would react.

@robertgworek2497
@robertgworek2497 10 ай бұрын
In Europe you have even ruskies, but that's not the point. There are hornets in US as well. Bald-Faced Hornets belongs to vespinae, so yes, they are not true hornets, although, they are very nasty... They can do something that hornets can't - they can shoot venom straight into the eyes, which is another level of being nasty.
