I actually got to play with Jayden once. I went to this jazz camp thing we have here in Australia and he was easily the best player there. Super intimidating but inspiring at the same time. I remember wanting to practice a lot after those camps.

Hi thanks Jayden for this lesson. This by far for me the most clearly explained altered scale. The scale it self is not difficult to find positions in guitar neck as it is symmetrical on fret board but it is hard to understand and hard to practice for me
@paxwallacejazz3 жыл бұрын
If you don't understand that the altered scale is also 7 other scales but just from other starting places you don't understand it. That C7alt is in a way Db-maj7 is Ebsus(b9) is Emaj7#5 is F#7+11 is Ab(-13) is Bbø,non-locrian 9. BECAUSE anything you can play over C7alt using the altered scale or Diminished wholetone scale you can play over any of those other chords!

Yes, but it is a little easier to think of the resultant tonality, rather than all those variants.

Voice leading. Don’t just Willy Nilly play the scale, think where the thirds and 7ths are landing. If you don’t and develop your skill as a player you will only end up coming back to it. Every single tutor has there approach. That’s mine.

Sometimes I wonder why I can't figure out how to improvise, but it's because I don't know my damn scales. I have to think through the majors... No wonder. I'll start drilling them until I can't mess up. Major, minors, pentas, mixos, dorians. I need to get that figured out before I hit the altered.

@Alejandro Gjezi I am just now seeing this. Thank you so much for this thorough response.

Thinking of the altered scale by its other name, the “diminished whole tone scale”, might be helpful for some.

The other way to master the altered scale is to just listen to this solo: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rJO2iK2XeaaZZ5I In all seriousness, though, this was a super helpful video and gives lots of great advice

Trane's using the augmented scale in One Down One Up, not the altered! Incredible album nonetheless
@bounderby993 жыл бұрын
@@christophejamesbrown whoops, you’re right; thanks for correcting me! Sometimes I get the two mixed up when thinking about them because of the #5. Also, with how epic and long that solo is, I’m sure there’s somewhere in there where he does use the altered scale
