I’m a serious car enthusiast and I’m still a novice at paint correction. I recently discovered your channel and appreciate the comparatively simple approach you present! I may even attend your detailing academy in the near future. How do I determine whether my vehicle has soft or hard paint? I have a white Porsche Macan and a black Porsche 911. You sold me on the Sonax Perfect Finish and the Rupes yellow pads. I will be ordering those from you today! Love the channel!
@Esotericdetail4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Wayne, and hope to see you here someday for one of our classes. The way to tell is by polishing. If you do a section with a yellow pad and Perfect Finish and it gets a very high level of correction, then it's a softer paint. If you do it and you don't see a lot of correction, then it would be a harder paint.
@waynestevens6604 жыл бұрын
Thank you, that sounds simple enough. I ordered the Sonax Perfect Finish from your store today but I had to order the 6” pads for my Griots DA from Detailed Image as they weren’t available on your site. I also ordered the Kamikaze ISM coating based on one of your videos. The Macan is due for a fresh coating. I used CarPro CQUK about 18 months ago, so will plan to do a good prep on it and use Perfect Finish prior to applying the coating. Thanks again for the quick response!

I think you’re right, a lot of hobbyists go with a one step. I did a one step on my car last Spring with Scholl S40/Rupes yellow pad on the LHR15 and got great results. Have heard so much about Perfect Finish that I will have to try it out👍
@SecretSauceyjuice7 жыл бұрын
Chris_Audittr2108 It's absolutely fantastic with a light cut or heavy polish pad. It will dust a little if you're using a long throw and trying to work over character lines on the vehicle, because you're generating a little heat and floating the pad over edges, but overall it's one of the best around. On a Toyota or Subaru (soft Japanese paint) it will look like a two step.

@Chris_Leslie225 did you get rid of all the swirl marks and micro marring with that combo? I did my first car with Scholl S40 and Scholl Ninja Pad using a DA polisher but there is still som micro scratches/micro marring.
@Audittr21084 жыл бұрын
Rafi - I had light swirls and it pretty much got rid of them. A one step will never remove deep defects and finish perfectly. It’s one or the other but S40 is a good compromise. If you were left with micro marring etc, were you keeping the pads clean it between sets and changing for fresh ones regularly?
@rafibenjaro22954 жыл бұрын
Chris_Leslie225 thanks Chris! I actually didn’t have any deep defects since it is a pretty fresh paint. Since it was my first time ever polishing a car I guess it was due to bad technique. I got a great amount of shine but if looking closely in good lighting conditions I can still see some micro scratches/micro marring which S40 didn’t cut.

Just came across your vid. I just polished out my black 17' 4Runner. I noticed a bunch of scratches from what I believe were due to the car wash over the winter. I had a Harbor Freight DA laying around, so I watched a bunch of vids and then picked up a orange lake country pad. Used that with some Meguiars polish and it worked pretty well. Then I ordered a microfiber med. cut lake country and that seemed to work better. Only thing is the microfiber pad gets matted down pretty quick. Any ideas on that ? Thanks!

Great video, kind of what I expected after watching the Sonax Perfect Finish Review. I was wondering where the Jescar Correction Compound bottle was going to come into play, because it does finish down very well (for a compound at least) so I was expecting to see some kind reference there. What I have found as a good combo on soft paints is Jescar Micro Finishing Polish with a Meguiars MF Cutting Disc (on a LHR21) with little to no pressure(which is working well until I get a bottle of Sonax).
@Esotericdetail7 жыл бұрын
It would be a very rare occasion for us to use a compound as a one-step, even if it has a very high finishing rate like Jescar. We've done this with some exceptionally hard paints, but for the most part, the Perfect Finish and Yellow Rupes pad is the winner. It's a fine balance between correction rate and clarity.

Recently discovered your channel and really like your teaching style. I am using a Rupes BIg Foot along with everything else you recommend including Sonax Perfect Finish and yellow pad. I have noticed that you and everyone else offering machine training always demonstrate on a hood or other flat surface, not a vertical surface.. I am applying Sonax to a Tesla Model X which has a lot of contours and ridges on the sides. Would like to see how you handle moving across raised areas and whether we should still use cross hatch approach and if so, whether we should back off on downward pressure when crossing over those raised areas or is that not a concern when using the DA machine?
@Esotericdetail4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Gary. For vertical surfaces, you handle them no differently, really. As for contours, they can require revised techniques that you usually won't find in tutorial videos. Because there are so many nuances, we reserve that to in-person teaching. And if you're dealing with ridges, that should be a breaking point that you don't cross over in your sections. If it's a horizontal ridge for instance on the side of the car, you would separate the area above the ridge and below the ridge. You don't incorporate the ride into your working section if that makes sense.

Been seeing a lot of detailers selling an "ultimate detail" and really only give you a wash and a spray on ceramic that is buffed by hand with microfiber and calling it a exterior detail! I now have to ask what brand polish they use and if it includes orbital in their 1-step polish.

@aredial20686 жыл бұрын
For a 1 step, I havnt branched out far in terms of abrasive compounds yet. I started on menzerna compounds, and for the work and cars I get in I find it does the right job I'm looking for. So for a 1 step, after prepping I'm using a rupes yellow pad with menzerna 3in1 compound and this gives me good results. Being a detailer, you have to be open to new products so I will get some sonax and get some test panels through, but do you have any feedback for the menzerna 3in1 against the sonax perfect finish?
@Esotericdetail6 жыл бұрын
Menzerna makes great products for sure. As for the comparison, those two products are really designed for 2 completely different jobs. When dealing with an all-in-one product like the Menzerna you're referring to, you have a polish and a light protectant in the same bottle. You're extremely limited on what you can do afterwards in terms of truly durable protection. With a product like Perfect Finish, you're going to achieve greater cut, with a finer finish since it's designed to do that one job. Additionally, you can then use whatever type of protectant that you want afterwards (wax, sealant, coating) since there's no issue with bonding. For a detailer, you'd want both products since they're produced for 2 different types of jobs. I'd categorize the all-in-one as a "light machine polish", whereas the PF would be for the intensive one-step, or the finishing polish in a 2-step process.

Yes it is a random orbital, not a forced rotation. It is very safe for beginners, but powerful enough for professionals. After polishing, you can go with something simple enough as Polishangel Rapidwaxx, or Jescar Powerlock +. We have videos on both of those items.

Hi I live in Europe so have no access to rupes pads. When looking at sonax pad chart it advices their green medium pad over their yellow pad which seems to be more for pure finish. So the dilemma is which one to take since i see you guys use almost exclusively the yellow ones( if the brands compare color code wise) and even white pads for softer paint. Will the green pad while offering more cut be able to compete with the yellow pad for finishing gloss? which is important for a 1 step polish. Many thanks!

7 жыл бұрын
I would like to get that if you can share-- Thanks
@Esotericdetail7 жыл бұрын
We aren't choosing not to give anyone the info. It is about the fact that within one manufacturer, there can be huge variations from one model to the next. Example: new Honda Accords have relatively soft paint; new Honda(Acura) NSXs have incredibly hard paint- an outlier to the norm. You also have to think about how paint ages over time and how it was taken care of. An older car that has been well taken care of and garaged is going to have paint that reacts differently than the exact same car that has been kept outside and neglected. Also, there can absolutely be differences between certain panels of a car, especially the older the car is. Older Ferraris frequently have paint that reacts differently by the panel because the panel materials are different, and the panels themselves may have been painted at different points along the assembly line (and sometimes re-painted right on the assembly line). This causes major variation from panel to panel, car to car, model to model, and manufacturer to manufacturer. Esoteric is never going to be the one that keeps secrets from anyone when it comes to paint and how to correct it. I would encourage you to call up PPG, Dupont, Glasurit, etc. and ask them the same questions- we can guarantee that you won't get the same kind of transparency from them!

there really never is a true one step ( unless you are using something like HD Speed) Because after any of the work described in this video or 99% of the others are There has to be a protective finish applied, right?

One-step referring to polishing - not also applying a coating after. So yes you are correct.

This sounds good for like light waterspots to take them off.

Water spots can be tricky since even ones that appear "light" can be deep - but yes polishing can help.

How does Perfect Finish work if used by hand?

It works, but limited in results.

How does the guy at home know whether his DD has hard, medium, or soft paint so he knows how to tailor his selection of pad and compound to optimize a one-step process? Oh, and BTW, thanks for not starting your video with, "What's up guys?" You're far more professional, and I do appreciate that.

It's all in the test section that you do. Simply use a solid combo like Sonax Perfect Finish with a yellow Rupes pad, and do a section. If it corrects easily, it's a soft to medium paint. If it doesn't get much correction, then it's a harder paint. For us here at the shop, that is our go-to combination that works extremely well on at least 95% of the cars we get in here. The key is to use a proven and consistent system so that you don't have to worry about switching things up relative to hardness levels of the paint. I hope this helps!

@@Esotericdetail Yes, that does help ... makes sense. In lieu of doing that, is there any "rule of thumb" regarding certain manufacturers or certain colors (e.g. black vs white) or where the car has been (warm climate vs cold climate)?

Damn 6-8 hours and the dealerships want to pay cheap money 🤦♂️ I’m not mentioning polish or wax Lol 😆 this 6-8 hours would be at least 300 for a smaller size car

There is no explanation how to do it! Blah blah blah...

This is not a useful INSTRUCTION video. Six minutes taking ABOUT one-step polishing is io little use to me. This is a sales pitch to spark interest in your products; but, not something to help me actually do the job.
