Get a cheap Styrofoam beverage cooler case (the disposable ones that people take on picnics) and use that as your hot water bath (metal bowls/pots dissipate heat quickly). Keep your developing tank in the hot water bath for the duration of the 6 mins when you're not agitating it. Also use an electric kettle to top-off with hot water to bring the temp up if needed instead of running gallons of hot water from the tap. If you want to be an absolute water miser, get a 2 gallon plastic bucket to capture all of your rinse water and then use that to flush your toilet.

I use a plastic ikea storage container, fill it with hot water, let the chemicals sit in the water, stick the thermometer into the developer bottle and wait until it reaches 39C. take all 3 bottles out and start. there's no way the temperature will drop more than the 2C tolerance during the whole development process (I've timed it :-) ) . I also found a great app called 'lab timer' which allows you to set up all your timers with labels so it's less things to think about. I found the first time I developed I was thinking about all the stuff I had to do and mildly panicking so anything that can help to remove some of these things is great. The 3 most important things I've found to help in no particular order are 1) fast reading thermometer 2) funnel (getting the chemicals back in the bottles is quick and easy) 3)lab timer app I've had actually more issues with scanning than developing. Getting rid of those microscopic hairs on the frame holder is a right pain. Love your channel

There's more temperature leeway than manufacturers recommend, and you'll still get consistent colours. If you put your dev tank in a bowl of water of the same temperature, drift will be negligible over the duration of development. I've always used 38 degree C/100F, which is 3 mins 15 sec for up to 4 films - not enough time for big temperature swings. The chemistry lasts much longer than the official figures if kept dark, air is removed in concertina bottles, and it's used within a reasonable amount of time, say 6-9 months. I dispose after 25 films and notice no colour shifts, but people claim 50 rolls+ for a 1 litre kit! If you use Poundland film, that makes for incredibly cheap colour photography! Once you've developed a few films it becomes totally routine - just remember to put the chemistry back in the same bottles, that's the biggest premature killer of development kits.

I got the Tetenal kit today and it says that the first use the colour developer performs well for 6 weeks. Seems worrying to me as its a short period of time. Please let me know. Thanks

PaulBario after roll 10 or a month of not using (whichever comes first) I add 30ish seconds to developer time. After roll 20 make it a full minute and after roll 30 I hear you should add 2 minutes but I've never pushed a kit that far. I maybe only add 30 seconds to the blix time after roll 15. It stays pretty stable. Just give the bottle a good shake if it's been sitting for a while. With C 41 the results don't just drop off into nothing. You'll see a gradual decrease in quality so you can adjust for subsequent rolls if you get some wonky results. After roll 15 you may start to notice some color shifts and increase in contrast but you can edit that in Photoshop if you wish. Stabilizer stays the same always. There's no real harm in leaving in a little bit longer if you want to. Also, the tetenal kit is very expensive. I noticed no difference in quality between that kit and the cheap unicolor powder kit.

Hey Ed, great episode! I am using the same kit and I found out that you really don't need an aquarium heater if you use hot tap water and put it into a big bucket and then put your chemical-bottles inside and wait until they warm up to the right temperature. Usually I use the 38C Method, I just find it easier to hold the chemicals at that temperature then at 30C. I usually use tap water around 45C to fill up the bucket. I found out that if your chemicals are at room temperature and you put them into the bucket, the temp of the bucket and the chemicals will even out at 38C. They also keep that temperature for quite a while. Another tip: Squeeze out all the air from your chemical-bottles once you're done developing. That makes them last longer and you can get almost double the amount of films out of one kit. Keep going man, you are a big inspiration to me, I love your photography!!

These pictures turned out really great with that vintage look. Might not be what the kodak suppose to be, but for me looks fantastic...definitely not a wash out look. Btw. as someone mention you should try to find helios for the Zenit, I got it from a flee market for just about fifty pence with non working zenit body and still use it on micro 4/3 body. Cheers Jan

If you want a really good water heater/circulator then get yourself a 'Anova Culinary Sous Vide Precision Cooker' from Amazon. Just clip to the side of a 10Ltr tank, pour in your water and set the temp. Drop your chemicals in and wait for the temps to stabilise and your ready to go. Saves messing about with 2 or 3 fish tank heaters, and this thing is accurate to 1/10th of a degree. You can cook a nice steak with it when you've finished as well. Love mine, but the price is a bit of a hit at £99

AWWWWWWW YEAH Developing color is so liberating. So many options open up. I had a pretty harrowing experience mixing it the first time. I actually got my packs mixed up so i had to order another kit. After the super stressful first time, its like nothing. The temperature thing is scary, but you have a 5 degree margin of error. Like with B/W, the more you do it, the you get comfortable enough to get a little sloppy. Can't wait til you whip the XPan and Nishika back out. That Tetenol kit looks way easier to mix than the Unicolor powder i use. Developing only takes 3.5 minutes tho.

yeah, it's weirdly relaxing. it might be the novelty of it... after developing SO MUCH in B/W, trying something new makes me feel like learning new tools. but it does take a lot of time. those 3.5 minutes on your Unicolor sound like magic!

My digibase kit actually states that the temperature range is +- 0.3 degrees over 37.8 for the 3:15 timing to work out. I routinely disregard it because it's absolutely impossible to do when manually developing and because I think my tap water makes it require longer development and fixing time. I go for 38 degrees and 3:38 on the dev and bleach, 5:30 instead of 4:30 on fixing. Developing colour can be daunting when you first read up on it but then you realise there's actually a much wider margin for error. Of course your colours will not be lab perfect, but the can't be using home equipment, can they. I use a laser IR thermometer btw, which also adds some bias to my temps.

Oh, and since there's that £1 Agfa film available from Poundland, it can be much cheaper to learn the ropes with than black and white, which costs 2.5-3-ish for 24 exps even if you roll it yourself.

in C-41 Tetenal and Unicolor use three steps, Cinestill uses only two, but I have not tried it. They are all basically the same. Cinestill might save you a few minutes.

Depends on the agitation. It’s in the instructions. Also, temperatures don’t need to be exact when developing. I have a video where I use just hot water withour measuring, and the results are great.

Although I have since acquired more techy equipment, for temperature control I still use my "poor man" set-up: a small insulated cooler designed to hold a 6-pack of beer and a fish tank heater. Pre-session, I fill the tank with water hotter than my process temperature and plug in my fish tank heater, pre-set to 105 degrees. I add 250ml bottles of my chems for either C-41 or E-6, then let the whole thing settle down to the target temperature while I load film tank and get ready. One problem with organizing this rig now is that fish tank heaters commonly now sold locally do not seem to get up the 100+ temperature you need for photo use. Of course, you now have the water-bath cooking heaters which do an excellent job and are probably more convenient and durable.

Next step is E6 then I guess. But take note, the kit goes bad within two weeks once mixed because the first developer only lasts that long. So just make sure you have 8 to 10 rolls of slide film shot and ready to develop. Although technically, you will make your money back for the kit after only developing two rolls.

Nice to see an effort made to maintain a proper processing temperature, as opposed to the "what the hell - room temp group". Pre-digital when the goal was color prints made in the chemical wet process, the contrast and color shifts introduced by off-temp processing and using chemicals well beyond their exhaustion were not correctable. Today, you can slide by by overusing these kits and pissing off on temp control because (1) digital scanning allows a much greater correction control, (2) most folks scan their film and look at the pictures on an uncalibrated computer screen, and (3) have lower or no quality expectations because they have nothing better for comparison.

the box says you can do 50 rolls, but I have (of course) not tested that. I don't think you can extend the life of a chemical by changing the temperature. it only lasts about three months, anyway.

Your Tetenal kit must be bigger than 1 litre. I have the 2.5 ltr instructions in front of me, and it claims 30-40 rolls from 2.5ltr, if you process 4 films at a time. Those are the official figures, the reality is much more generous. In my experience you have to get temperatures and times way out to get serious colour shifts. Being slightly casual is no worse than colour negatives I've received from professional C41 labs, and well within post processing tweaking limits.

Best to agitate with a twiddle stick, it allows fresh chemistry to get to the film, but doesn't cool the mix in the way inversion agitation does. Agitate stabilizer in the conventional way and you'll have a foam mountain!

Hey Ed, I've also done C-41 a few times and ran into the same issues as you. I also need to mix 3 chemicals + a very small amount of a fourth chemical to make the developer - so small I need syringes to measures it. Bleach and fixer are separate. The results are nice, I love colour film but the process is so tedious I still have 6 rolls of film that wait to be developed since April.
