Because my musical specialty is medieval/early Renaissance music, people have considered my lack of vibrato a plus. "Get Joan for this. She's got that perfect British choirboy voice." So fast forward a few decades ... I am now 73, and I am fortunate not to have that old-lady wobble in my voice, but there is a slight vibrato creeping in. I've decided that it's just silly to want grown women to sound like little boys, no matter what repertoire they're singing!

@@tormentorchick1755 That vibrato is an unnatural one. I use it. It sounds good in some situations. I think Elvis did it in the end of Yesterday When I Was Young. But it's always better to have a natural one.

I've found that I learn by accidental mimicry. I recently added some new artists on my spotify tracks and then one day as I was singing along I just went 'woah what did I just do?" I was copying the singer's singing style just for fun and tadah, randomly I was able to play with my vibrato a lot more than I used to. It helps to listen to various styles of singers. For me, country and folk music has made a big difference.

I sometimes have a faint vibrato, but in headvoice only. And usually only as I warm up and sing very softly. I think it might have to do with tension. But I have trouble maintainig a stabile voice unless I sing relatively loud. If I don’t, it breaks, fries and wobbles, or cuts out. Do you think these things are linked and what should I do about it. I took a lot of lessons 2-3 years ago, found my chest voice, but never really improved the stability or vibrato.

Fortsätt träna. I see it as a sport. You need to train your muscles. Look at the face of Usain Bolt when he runs, totally relaxed because the muscle memory in his legs is separated from his face. It is only possible after hours, days and years of training.

This comment may get lost but I've always wondered something: how do singers control the weather in their mouths? What I mean is, how do singers go long periods of time while singing with no chance to swallow their spit? If I'm singing a busy song and little to no pauses, my mouth gets full of spit and I have to stop singing to get rid of it.

I am starting singing late in life. I've been playing guitar since I was 11. I am retired now. I have missed so many opportunities over the decades to play because I couldn't sing. A few friends of mine, lawyers, accountants, bankers, etc made extra money getting gigs on the weekend (and met girls, old news now). I personally know dozens of guitar players who won't even try to sing because they never developed it and they sound horrible if they do try. I am trying to develop a vibrato. It isn't easy. Its not working yet but I am hoping. Any tips for a beginning older singer? My mother had a very good vibrato. Very very strong. I hope I got those genes.
