Vibrato is an oscillation of two different pitches happening simultaneously. This kind of pitch variant happens as a result of a change in air pressure and cord tension. Usually when vocal coordination’s are engaged and then relaxed. The presence of vibrato adds an expansion, vitality, warmth and a polish to an otherwise very simple sound.
Very few vocal coaches will teach or even talk about vibrato. Their stance is that it is a naturally occurring effect once good supportive habits are established. Which is totally true! However, vibrato also has deliberateness to it. Which means you have to engage it. So you, KZbin viewer may be saying to yourself “ I do have great vocal habits but I still can’t seem to find my vibrato! So what can I do?” Well friends…it’s for you that I have made this video.
Think of vibrato as being similar to a golf swing. Everyone uses what works best for them. As you use this video to practice your vibrato, I encourage you not to judge the quality of your sounds. The sounds you make are a result of your coordination’s. So you’ll have to experiment to see what works best for you. The exercises in this video are meant to be temporary coordination’s. Just to get things engaged and moving.
To get started, let’s simplify the coordination of vibrato with a simple note bend. We’re going to start really slow and then build on it. The idea here is to trick the nervous system into an eventual subtle vibrato. You’ll want to choose a tempo that allows you to perform the bend perfectly. Do not rush through this. Going too quickly through the bends will reinforce untidy habits. What you can do slow, you can do fast. Keep the bending clear and concise.
Our next exercise is a breathy laugh. This is meant to wake-up the diaphragm and bring more diversity to your sound. Remember that the sounds we will do today are in no way a finished sound, but are meant to get the ball rolling by engaging the components that are necessary for a healthy vibrato.
Our last exercise in today’s video is a wobbly wide vibrato. It kind of sounds to me like a baby bounding on a lap. This is meant to engage the subtle connections of diaphragm and vocal cord. Remember, this is a temporary sound and the end focus is to slowly and gradually speed up the sensation, which will ultimately lead to a pure, finished sound.
Now that you have a nice feel for what vibrato feels like…go forth and sing!! Remember to keep your sensations clear and work at a pace that allows you to perform perfectly! I also want to encourage you to see vibrato as a vocal effect, much like licks, trills, runs and riffs. As you really come to embody that lovely texture that vibrato can give, you’ll want to vary the degree of vibrato to keep your listeners ear engaged.

As an opera singer I found this video very interesting. Operatic vibrato, ie the natural vibrato is created when there is total freedom and openness from where the sound is created in the diaphragm, up through the throat, over the soft larynx and out of the mouth. What you are teaching of course is a very different technique. I would call it more of a contrived vibrato, but an effective technique.

I have never sang publicly but I have been asked to sing at and with my lil brother's wedding and I am sing your video's to practice... I am actually hearing a difference and from not being able to really sing the song in question (quavering, sort of "frayed" sounding voice - it is in a really low key/tone!!) I have, after doing the exercises in the other video about how to sing low, I can hit it, no problem... it just happened this evening and I am absolutely mindblown at the sound that's coming out of my face. Thanks a million, what you teach is saving my life and my nerves :D

What this lesson did for me is way more than what any other youtube video and my previous vocal coach (I only had one because I can't afford it, but I swear, when I'll have the money, I'll pay for new lessons) did. Really! I understood everything. Now I understand how it works and I don't hate my voice that much. Definitely subscribing and thank you for your videos!

You are the most comprehensive person I ever met. You teach me more in 5 mins than what I have been looking for in 20 years. True story is that I am a seriously disabled hearing person now, also shit old (53). I always loved music to the serious extent. Working in the music shops customize guitars so they get their "signature" sound (ppl were crazy get vintage pickups installed) but too busted ears to make it a real profession. Used Digital stuff from Yamaha just to stem them. (But I gave em e hell stemming Gibson bass with London horns). Anyway, I love singing. But it is not easy. Not clearly hear my own tone or NO vibrato. TODAY I discovered it. Thanks to YOU. Now just practice. Thank you! Tusen takk!

Plus the exercises you did were awesome. The last one I could kinda hear it a little bit and that’s amazing!! I’m probably gonna watch this video a lot thank you so much!!☺️😁❤️

Amazing. I have a last minute audition tomorrow for Marius from Les Miserables. I have a great voice when recording folk/pop/rock music but have never had vibrato. I went through your exercises once about 20 minutes ago then sang through Empty Chairs while concentrating on relaxing my jaw and singing from my diaphragm and I now have vibrato. Added a bunch of bass and richness to my voice too. Sounds like an opera singer. Miracle. Thank you so much.

All the best! Thank you a lot. Roberto Sion, Sao Paulo, Brasil.

Vibrato came to me kind of naturally. At some point it was just there. But I don't know if I'm doing it right because while I can hit it at most notes, certain notes I just can't get it right. Is that normal or can your video help me achieve it whenever I want?

It depends, not being able to use vibrato for certain notes can really be just about the strength your voice has. You may be able to sing the note out but if you don't have the strength to back it up your vibrato will fall flat. Try doing scales more, and exercises that help switch from low, mid, and high range to get the strength you need. Good luck!!

It isn't easy to sing vibrato at very high pitches but you also need to make sure you have proper support when singing high to be able to sing vibrato with those high pitches. Sometimes you might hear singers sing a very high and long note before dropping down a note or two to continue holding the phrase with vibrato. So if you can't sing vibrato with a note, try use more support or drop down a few notes and see if vibrato works there and then work on trying to use vibrato at higher pitches. And if you can't use vibrato at the low end of your range, that's pretty normal because even for me it's not that easy to use vibrato at a very low register. It's possible but not very easy. Hope that helps =D

One of the best instructional videos I've seen. You're both perfectly clear with the steps and encouragingly supportive with your viewers. Plus, it really helps without any professional training to know what and where the body moves or changes in order to make a sound. Overall, thank you for teaching the ones who never got the opportunity to learn from a professional in person. Liked and subscribed.
