Great video sir. Very informative, I just replaced the front caliper and bracket for my neighbor to help him out, his wife drove the car home and smoke was coming from the right front tire. I took off the caliper after we threw cold water on the rotor and caliper to cool it down on 2010 Dodge Journey 4Cyl. There's was no way to collapse the piston it was seized. I sent him to the auto part store and he got a new caliper and bracket I installed it bled the line went on test drive with him everything was good. 1/2 hour later he calls me and says the same wheel is locked up again ! So I will check the flexible brake line as you showed on your video. I have 3 cars and have done all the brakes on them , Never have I come across this problem! Thanks a bunch.

Thanks for this video! My 06 Wrangler got new hoses and NAPA calipers and is locking up on the right side. I'm suspicious the new caliper was faulty because it happened not too long after the part was installed. - As a retired mechanic, may I suggest not using your hands to "hammer" your wrenches to loosen bolts. I live with carpal tunnel now, having to constantly exercise my grip strength to keep my hands from "locking up": physical therapy rather than an operation as so many my age have testified they would not have had the surgery if they could go back to that choice again! Excellent video, I love how you watch it afterwards and then go back and edit in missing information, thanks for taking the time to help everyone. One question about why in a functioning floating caliper system after releasing the brake pedal, why does the piston retract and why does the caliper slide back releasing the opposite side pad as well? You mention the dust boot over the pistons itself which is hard to swallow, but if that's true, why does the whole caliper slide back to neutral after releasing brake pressure? Would love to know Thanks again for such informative well explained videos!
@BarboursAutoHelp5 жыл бұрын
Let me make sure I understand the question. Your wanting to know why the piston retracts right? Well, its not actually the dust boot that does this, it's the seal inside that keeps the brake fluid from seeping past the piston. Its a square cut seal and it actually flexes outward a bit when the brakes are applied. When the brakes are released the seal pulls the piston back in a bit. ( a very small bit). Here is a link to an excellent video showing a visual of this. At about the 1 minute mark you'll see the piston retract back into the piston bore. This movement is due to the seal retracting back to its resting position. (the video doesn't show the exaggerated movement of the seal like the books did from tech school, but you'll get the picture.) hope this helps.... kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z6qUaKN6gahje5I
@MYCHANNEL-on1cp5 жыл бұрын
@@BarboursAutoHelp thanks, yes i saw that video, and yes you understand what i'm asking, i guess if there was a small spring inside the floating pin holes at the bottoms it would make more mechanical sense to me, i just cant see what would make the caliper move back on its own after the fluid pressure is released, that video seems exagerated but maybe being a machinist i'm nitpicking.
@BarboursAutoHelp5 жыл бұрын
Yes it is exaggerated. I guess I'll try to explain it like this. When the piston is pushed out by hydraulic pressure the seal flexes outward in the direction of the piston travel. When the fluid pressure is released the seal wants to return to its original position and because its hugging the piston it pulls the piston back just a bit until the seal is back in the resting position. (I had a hard time wrapping my mind around it too at first.) But really there is nothing else in the caliper that can cause the piston to retract. The retraction of the piston is needed to of coarse keep brake wear down but also helps just a tad with gas mileage.

Great video and thanks for posting, I always open the bleeder valve when collapsing the piston, the caliper is the lowest point in the brake circuit and sediment and water will collect here as they are heavier than brake fluid, you do not want to push that junk back up into the ABS module or master cylinder or you could have problems, brake fluid should only go one way. You want to push all that out and let clean fluid go back in which will prevent any rust on the piston and bore. You can also test the brake hose by pumping the pedal a few times then open the bleeder screw, if fluid comes out under pressure the brake hose is restricted and acting like a check valve.

Sounds like it may be too late. I know your pain. Rust is the enemy. I just changed all the brake hoses on my 16 year old pickup. Started 3 days ahead of time squirting PB Blaster penetrating oil on those connections. Every day for a few days. Always use a flair nut wrench, not an open end or adjustable. Hold both the flair nut and the hex on the hose fitting. Got all of them off with no problem. Not so lucky on grandsons pickup though. Propane torch heat on them helps the penetrant work in (be sure to use nonflammable penetrant). Heat the connection and hit it with "Freeze off" type penetrant can help. What will fool you though is when the threaded part brakes loose but the line itself is rusted to the inside diameter of the flair nut. Sorry to say no magic solution for that.

On my 07' Volvo XC90 (12 yrs old now) , left rear brake seized up starting a fire. Replaced both rear calipers, rotors & pads. One week later, right front seized. Replaced both front calipers, rotors & pads ($600 in parts so far). Still, brakes feel as though as they are dragging. Replaced the master cylinder (another $100 + $16 in DOT 4 brake fluid). Brakes STILL dragging (somewhere). Next step ... replace all 4 rubberized brake lines (another $82). Wish me luck! I hear the rubber brake lines are a far more common issue than you might think. I never thought it would be that probable. Perhaps this comment may save someone $700 in parts and a ton of aggravation. The lines are probably the cheapest and easiest item of the entire system.

Update: Did all four rubber lines. While re-inspecting all my work (because I'm in there anyhow), I found one brake pad (right front) that somehow got a little cocked within the caliper. I didn't even think that would be possible, but that may have been the issue. Those (front) calipers are so large and heavy, I broke the one on the right apart and reassembled on the rotor. The one I kept intact and muscled in (left front) was fine. But anyhow... now all is well. Thanks

Excellent video, my 2008 BMW 550i has been having this locking issue with the front passenger brake, when I first start driving it’s fine but after a while it begins to lock up, I believe that the flex hose is blocked and not allowing the brake fluid to release back quick enough, if I let it sit for a while it goes back to normal, I’m bringing it in tomorrow for repair so hopefully that’s the only issue, I’m pretty confident that it is just that because it’s the only one of my 4 brakes that locks up.

Great video; thanks for sharing! I just replaced both front brake calipers/brackets on my son's 2007 Toyota Corolla and was able to verify the left caliper was in fact the culprit in this case.

Got a 85 Silverado C10, I've changed both the calipers the master cylinder and it's still doing it. Sometimes when I barley hit the brakes it will randomly lock up but not stay locked. Changing the brake lines today, hopefully it will solve the issue
