Hell Yeah! I bought a countryman from my dad. The oil filter/cooling housing is leaking, and they want $2500 to fix. This will be my biggest job yet but im going to do it myself. The hardest part is going to be putting it into front end Servicing mode. I need to remember exactly how to put it all back together. Thought about using a Gopro and then just rewind the footage. Sorry for the long comment, but you got yourself a new subscriber.

The water pump tensioner on European cars is electronic controlled. When cold there is no drive between the crank pulley and water pump pulley. Once the engine warms up the engine ecu moves the the tension so it starts to spin the water pump. It’s just away of getting the engine upto temperature quicker.

that little pinch roller looks like it belongs in a tape recorder. well i remember 1950s record players used rubber rollers to drive the turntable. so i guess there is a precedent to use pinch rollers to drive water pumps. just so funny.

The reason the pulley is like that is all to do with emissions. The water pump is disengaged/has less drag on it until the engine warms up, once it's warm the tensioner is engaged. There is still a bit of a flutter from the engine, I would replace the chain tensioner too tbh. The chain issues that those minis had was pretty much always down to that tensioner. The tensioner fails, the chain goes slack and slaps against the chain guides which are plastic and it breaks them. If that happens it's then pull the whole chain out and the sump to get the broken plastic out. Then fit new chain and guides and tensioner etc etc. Replacing just the tensioner now can save you grief in the long run.

I had the same noise with the idler tensioner for the water pump
@FrankKinlan888Ай бұрын
The idler takes the strain off the waterpump so you don’t need larger bearings and seals. The actual waterpump hadn’t failed. Some of the comments show a lack of understanding, those idler bolts are a pain though.
@thomasbrown-h1b2 ай бұрын
The tensioner is to allow the water pump to not run until the engine warms up then it moves to engage the pulleys. For quick warm up. Reduced emissions
@kickasspowdercoating2 ай бұрын
No, it’s engaged all the time
@sindalgraff2 ай бұрын
The Idler pulley definitely should not be engaged all the time.
@TheRedgtv20002 күн бұрын
You should’ve replaced the water pump while you were in there much less labor for next time. That also depends if the customer wanted to spend another $60 for the part.

Perhaps the timing is off... sounds like valve noise...
@samkitty58943 ай бұрын
Sorry friend, the noise is still there. That is not a normal sound. My guess is that the starter gear (solenoid) is stock touching the fly wheel gear. I've seen this happen few times. Find a piece of wood, or a long socket extension and hit it against the starter with a hammer. See if it disengages, and the noise goes away.

Sorry for what I fixed the noise

@@kickasspowdercoating No you did not. That is not a normal sounding engine.
@kickasspowdercoating3 ай бұрын
@@samkitty5894 did you watch the entire video? I clearly found the noise. It was the missing piece of the pulley on the water pump that was making the noise making the tensioner bounce for the belt.

@samkitty58942 ай бұрын
@@joansmith8215 Great mechanic can tell a lot about the engine by listening to the sounds it is making. Also by putting hand on exhaust and looking for skips or burps in ignition. Smooth running engine will have uniform "puff puff" coming from the exhaust.
